Gaming charity cancels Florida event citing covid, 'Don't Say Gay' law
Florida's Parental Rights in Education Act, which was championed by and signed into effect by the Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), places restrictions on classroom discussions regarding gender, sexual orientation and LGBTQ issues. The White House has described the law as thinly veiled attack on LGBTQ rights, calling it "discrimination, plain and simple" in an official statement. The law has also been condemned by dozens of major corporations including Sony Interactive Entertainment, Starbucks and Target. In March, Disney announced it would be halting all political donations in Florida due to the law after the company's own workers criticized CEO Bob Chapek for not taking action sooner.
Artificial Intelligence Continues to Evolve in Government and Elsewhere
The concept of using artificial intelligence to help mitigate dull, repetitive or manpower-intensive jobs within government is nothing new. For example, the Post Office has been using AI to scan, route and track letters and packages for several years now. Other agencies are using similar so-called low-level AI for everything from document processing to managing their payroll. Sometimes called robotic process automation, tasking computers with those kinds of jobs makes a lot of sense. A human could do the same repetitive type of job as well, but it would take much longer. And the human would likely get tired at some point and thus be more prone to errors and mistakes. Slowly, however, AI is starting to be asked to perform higher level tasks that are normally undertaken by humans.
US blocks sale of some Nvidia and AMD AI chips to China
The US government has banned AMD and Nvidia from exporting chips used to support artificial intelligence work to China. The ban affects Nvidia's A100 chips, often deployed in data centers to speed up the training of machine learning models, and its forthcoming H100 chip, while AMD has also received new license requirements that will stop its MI250 advanced AI chip from being exported to China. In a filing with the SEC, Nvidia said: "The US government has imposed a new license requirement, effective immediately, for any future export to China (including Hong Kong) and Russia of the Company's A100 and forthcoming H100 integrated circuit." According to Nvidia, the US government has said that the new license requirement addresses the risk of these chips being used for military purposes in China and RussiaNividia said it does not sell products to customers in Russia. Nvidia also stated in its filing that the new license requirement may impact its ability to complete the development of H100 in a timely manner or support existing customers of A100, and may result in it having to move certain operations out of China.

The robots have arrived in California's fields. This summer, a self-driving tractor was spotted working rows of vines in Napa valley. Described as resembling a "souped-up golf cart", the tractor runs on an electric battery and can be operated remotely with an app. Farther south, strawberry harvesting robots have been picking fruit. Complete with wheels, clipper-tipped arms and a catchment tray, its maker claims the machine can pick almost as many berries as a human with 95% accuracy.

To Clear Deadly Land Mines, Science Turns to Drones and Machine Learning
A small group of researchers struggle against the stiff wind to set up a pop-up tent for some shade. Nearby a young man opens a heavy Pelican case to reveal a pile of explosives."These are inert," he says, "but we're lucky to be working at a range that has so many different kinds of munitions." The range is an explosive-ordnance-disposal field laboratory maintained by Oklahoma State University, and the researchers are led by Jasper Baur and Gabriel Steinberg, co-founders of the Demining Research Community, a nonprofit organization bridging academic research and humanitarian demining efforts. They have been in Oklahoma for two weeks, setting up grids of mines and munitions to train a drone-based, machine-learning-powered detection system to find and identify dangerous explosives so humans don't have to. The Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor reports that at least 7,073 people were killed or injured by mines in 54 countries and areas in 2020.

It will be doing so for billions more years. Yet, we have only just begun tapping into that abundant, renewable source of energy at affordable cost. Solar absorbers are a material used to convert this energy into heat or electricity. Maria Chan, a scientist in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory, has developed a machine learning method for screening many thousands of compounds as solar absorbers. Her co-author on this project was Arun Mannodi-Kanakkithodi, a former Argonne postdoc who is now an assistant professor at Purdue University.

She shared her experiences and reflections with him, and those became the base for the conversation inside the studio that bloomed into GAFIW. We weren't looking intentionally into WW2, but rather we felt that keeping the setting true to the actual history and location can bring a sense of specificity and authenticity."
