Rehabilitating Homeless: Dataset and Key Insights

This paper presents a large anonymized dataset of homelessness alongside insights into the data-driven rehabilitation of homeless people. The dataset was gathered by a large nonprofit organization working on rehabilitating the homeless for twenty years. This is the first dataset that we know of that contains rich information on thousands of homeless individuals seeking rehabilitation. We show how data analysis can help to make the rehabilitation of homeless people more effective and successful. Thus, we hope this paper alerts the data science community to the problem of homelessness.


Predicting Participants' Performance in Programming Contests using Deep Learning Techniques

In recent days, the number of technology enthusiasts is increasing day by day with the prevalence of technological products and easy access to the internet. Similarly, the amount of people working behind this rapid development is rising tremendously. Computer programmers consist of a large portion of those tech-savvy people. Codeforces, an online programming and contest hosting platform used by many competitive programmers worldwide. It is regarded as one of the most standardized platforms for practicing programming problems and participate in programming contests. In this research, we propose a framework that predicts the performance of any particular contestant in the upcoming competitions as well as predicts the rating after that contest based on their practice and the performance of their previous contests.


DOMINO: Domain-aware Loss for Deep Learning Calibration

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, UF, USA Abstract Deep learning has achieved the state-of-the-art performance across medical imaging tasks; however, model calibration is often not considered. Uncalibrated models are potentially dangerous in high-risk applications since the user does not know when they will fail. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel domain-aware loss function to calibrate deep learning models. The proposed loss function applies a class-wise penalty based on the similarity between classes within a given target domain. Thus, the approach improves the calibration while also ensuring that the model makes less risky errors even when incorrect.


Explainable Artificial Intelligence: Precepts, Methods, and Opportunities for Research in Construction

Explainable artificial intelligence has received limited attention in construction despite its growing importance in various other industrial sectors. In this paper, we provide a narrative review of XAI to raise awareness about its potential in construction. Our review develops a taxonomy of the XAI literature comprising its precepts and approaches. Opportunities for future XAI research focusing on stakeholder desiderata and data and information fusion are identified and discussed. We hope the opportunities we suggest stimulate new lines of inquiry to help alleviate the scepticism and hesitancy toward AI adoption and integration in construction.


ChatGPT Is Great--You're Just Using It Wrong

It doesn't take much to get ChatGPT to make a factual mistake. My son is doing a report on US presidents, so I figured I'd help him out by looking up a few biographies. Garry Wills famously wrote "Lincoln at Gettysburg," and Lincoln himself wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, of course, but it's not a bad start. Then I tried something harder, asking instead about the much more obscure William Henry Harrison, and it gamely provided a list, nearly all of which was wrong. Numbers 4 and 5 are correct; the rest don't exist or are not authored by those people.


My Strange Day With Bing's New AI Chatbot

Twenty minutes after Microsoft granted me access to a limited preview of its new chatbot interface for the Bing search engine, I asked it something you generally don't bring up with someone you just met: Was the 2020 presidential election stolen? Answering political questions wasn't one of the use cases Microsoft demonstrated at its launch event this week, where it showcased new search features powered by the technology behind startup OpenAI's ChatGPT. Microsoft executives hyping their bot's ability to synthesize information from across the web instead focused on examples like creating a vacation itinerary or suggesting the best and most budget-friendly pet vacuum. But they had, implicitly, put into high gear a race to use chatbots to upend the way people look up information online. Google also announced search upgrades this week and its own chatbot, named Bard.


SpaceX doesn't want Ukraine using Starlink to control military drones

Elon Musk's SpaceX may be willing to supply Ukraine with Starlink service as it repels the Russian invasion, but it's not thrilled with every use of the satellite internet technology. Operating chief Gwynne Shotwell tells guests at a Federal Aviation Administration conference that SpaceX objects to reported uses of Starlink to control military drones. While the company doesn't mind troops using satellite broadband for communication, it doesn't mean for the platform to be used for "offensive purposes," Shotwell says. The executive adds that SpaceX can limit Ukraine's ability to use Starlink with combat drones, and has already done so. The company hasn't explained how it curbs use in the field.


AI Cyber Solutions Positioning To Better Secure Web3

The past year was tough for crypto markets with the Terra Luna meltdown, the FTX bankruptcy, a string of high-profile insolvencies, and a surfeit of hacking-related incidents. A recent report from Immunefi, the bug bounty and security platform, revealed the crypto industry incurred losses of $3.9 billion in 2022 due to various hacking, fraud, and scam-related incidents. The decentralized finance (DeFi) market was the most targeted by cyber criminals and suffered over $3 billion in losses from 155 incidents, a 56 percent increase on 2021. A CyberEdge report found a record 63 percent of ransomware victims paid ransoms (2021), encouraging cybercriminals to increase their attacks, and that ransomware attacks have increased by 80 percent year-on-year. With the Web3 market forecast to scale to $6 trillion, cyber security experts are expecting cyber crime to scale in pace with Web3 growth.


Elon Musk's Neuralink 'is under investigation' by the DOT over claims it transported pathogens

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) is said to be investigating Elon Musk's Neuralink over claims the company illegally transported hazardous pathogens. The probe is in response to allegations from the Physicians Committee of Responsible Medicine (PCRM), which state Musk's company unsafely packed and moved implants removed from the brains of monkeys that may have been infected. PCRM, an animal-welfare advocacy group, wrote to Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg earlier on Thursday to alert it of records it obtained on the matter from the University of California (UC) Davis, according to Reuters. The letters state that the implants were not properly sanitized and packaged, thus carrying pathogens that could cause serious health issues in infected humans. The lasted investigation follows months of allegations against Neuralink, which is said to have violated animal welfare laws with'botched experiments.'

The age-old question in my industry is, "Where are we in a given hype cycle?" For now, crypto news cycle dominance has, thankfully, died now, largely through its own self-destructive tendencies. FTX obviously served as the most prominent recent example of what happens when the tech community believes its own hype. You so badly wish for the success of a concept that you lose the thread. Sprinkle in legitimately bad actors and platforms that allow such actions to thrive, and you've got a recipe for catastrophic implosion.
