Cooperative guidance of multiple missiles: a hybrid co-evolutionary approach

Cooperative guidance of multiple missiles is a challenging task with rigorous constraints of time and space consensus, especially when attacking dynamic targets. In this paper, the cooperative guidance task is described as a distributed multi-objective cooperative optimization problem. To address the issues of non-stationarity and continuous control faced by cooperative guidance, the natural evolutionary strategy (NES) is improved along with an elitist adaptive learning technique to develop a novel natural co-evolutionary strategy (NCES). The gradients of original evolutionary strategy are rescaled to reduce the estimation bias caused by the interaction between the multiple missiles. Then, a hybrid co-evolutionary cooperative guidance law (HCCGL) is proposed by integrating the highly scalable co-evolutionary mechanism and the traditional guidance strategy. Finally, three simulations under different conditions demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of this guidance law in solving cooperative guidance tasks with high accuracy. The proposed co-evolutionary approach has great prospects not only in cooperative guidance, but also in other application scenarios of multi-objective optimization, dynamic optimization and distributed control.

Differential geometric approaches to the analysis and processing of data in the form of symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrices have had notable successful applications to numerous fields including computer vision, medical imaging, and machine learning. The dominant geometric paradigm for such applications has consisted of a few Riemannian geometries associated with spectral computations that are costly at high scale and in high dimensions. We present a route to a scalable geometric framework for the analysis and processing of SPD-valued data based on the efficient computation of extreme generalized eigenvalues through the Hilbert and Thompson geometries of the semidefinite cone. We explore a particular geodesic space structure based on Thompson geometry in detail and establish several properties associated with this structure. Furthermore, we define a novel iterative mean of SPD matrices based on this geometry and prove its existence and uniqueness for a given finite collection of points. Finally, we state and prove a number of desirable properties that are satisfied by this mean.

US union opposes driverless trucks waiver for Waymo, Aurora
WASHINGTON, April 11 (Reuters) - A major U.S. transport union on Tuesday opposed a request by Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) self-driving unit Waymo and autonomous driving technology company Aurora Innovation Inc (AUR.O) for an exemption from rules on warning devices for large semi-trucks, citing safety issues. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) said last month it received a joint application from Waymo and Aurora seeking a five-year exemption from rules that require drivers to place reflective triangles or a flare around a stopped truck to alert other drivers and help prevent a crash. Aurora and Waymo instead want to use warning beacons mounted on the truck cab to avoid needing human drivers. The Transport Workers Union of America said the petition is "inappropriate, represents an overreach and a misuse of the waiver and exemption process, and would significantly diminish the safety of our roads. It should be rejected in the strongest possible terms."

US looks to establish rules for artificial intelligence
The US government is taking its first tentative steps toward establishing rules for artificial intelligence tools, as the frenzy over generative AI and chatbots reach a fever pitch. The US commerce department on Tuesday announced it is officially requesting public comment on how to create accountability measures for AI, seeking help on how to advise US policymakers to approach the technology. "In the same way that financial audits created trust in the accuracy of financial statements for businesses, accountability mechanisms for AI can help assure that an AI system is trustworthy," said Alan Davidson, the head of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), at a press conference at the University of Pittsburgh. Davidson said that the NTIA is seeking feedback from the public, including from researchers, industry groups, and privacy and digital rights organizations on the development of audits and assessments of AI tools created by private industry. He also said that the NTIA looking to establish guardrails that would allow the government to determine whether AI systems perform the way companies claim they do, whether they are safe and effective, whether they have discriminatory outcomes or "reflect unacceptable levels of bias", whether they spread or perpetuate misinformation, and whether they respect individuals' privacy.

Ukraine's Quest for Homegrown AI Drones to Take On Russia
The war in Ukraine, now into its 14th grueling month, has displaced millions, sparked global food shortages, and threatened to spiral into wider conflict. It has also highlighted how new technologies--especially ones drawn from the commercial sector--are upending conventional military doctrine. Ukraine has resisted and repelled Russia's much larger military force, thanks in large part to a willingness, borne of necessity, to adopt and experiment with novel technologies, not all of them originally designed for military use. I recently spoke with Ukraine's 32-year-old minister of digital transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, about the country's interest in tapping new technology to boost the war effort. Fedorov spoke over Zoom, via an interpreter, from an undisclosed location in Ukraine, about plans to produce more sophisticated drones and other autonomous systems, and to incubate military startups.
