Training with Mixed-Precision Floating-Point Assignments

When training deep neural networks, keeping all tensors in high precision (e.g., 32-bit or even 16-bit floats) is often wasteful. However, keeping all tensors in low precision (e.g., 8-bit floats) can lead to unacceptable accuracy loss. Hence, it is important to use a precision assignment -- a mapping from all tensors (arising in training) to precision levels (high or low) -- that keeps most of the tensors in low precision and leads to sufficiently accurate models. We provide a technique that explores this memory-accuracy tradeoff by generating precision assignments for convolutional neural networks that (i) use less memory and (ii) lead to more accurate convolutional networks at the same time, compared to the precision assignments considered by prior work in low-precision floating-point training. We evaluate our technique on image classification tasks by training convolutional networks on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and ImageNet. Our method typically provides > 2x memory reduction over a baseline precision assignment while preserving training accuracy, and gives further reductions by trading off accuracy. Compared to other baselines which sometimes cause training to diverge, our method provides similar or better memory reduction while avoiding divergence.
DLKoopman: A deep learning software package for Koopman theory
We present DLKoopman -- a software package for Koopman theory that uses deep learning to learn an encoding of a nonlinear dynamical system into a linear space, while simultaneously learning the linear dynamics. While several previous efforts have either restricted the ability to learn encodings, or been bespoke efforts designed for specific systems, DLKoopman is a generalized tool that can be applied to data-driven learning and optimization of any dynamical system. It can either be trained on data from individual states (snapshots) of a system and used to predict its unknown states, or trained on data from trajectories of a system and used to predict unknown trajectories for new initial states. DLKoopman is available on the Python Package Index (PyPI) as 'dlkoopman', and includes extensive documentation and tutorials. Additional contributions of the package include a novel metric called Average Normalized Absolute Error for evaluating performance, and a ready-to-use hyperparameter search module for improving performance.

BOSTON โ EXCLUSIVE: Stockton Rush, the 61-year-old adventurer and CEO who died this week along with four other crew members in a catastrophic implosion near the bow of the Titanic, appeared in a series of never-before-seen surreal images captured during testing of the vehicle years ago. In the series of May 2018 photos taken in Abaco, Bahamas, and obtained by Fox News Digital, Rush can be seen peering through the vessel's lone porthole, testing out computer equipment inside and posing next to the 21-foot submersible on the deck of a ship before the test run. They were captured by underwater photographer Becky Kagan Schott, who said Rush had tested the vehicle numerous times in the area, and she befriended the adventurer. The Titan was designed to reach depths of 4,000 meters, according to OceanGate, the company Rush founded in 2009. It was meant for a variety of purposes, including scientific research, media production, and site surveying.
Missing Titanic submarine found, crew killed in deep-sea catastrophe, Coast Guard says
"A debris field was discovered within the search area by an ROV near the Titanic," the USCG said just before noon. ROV stands for remotely operated vehicle. Experts were evaluating the information. The Titan lost contact with its surface vessel, the Polar Prince, around 1 hour and 45 minutes into its dive Sunday morning, about 900 miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and around 400 miles southeast of St John's, in Canada's Newfoundland. "We understand debris has been found which may be the landing frame and a rear cover of the tail instrument compartment of The Titan lost on previous dives," Richard Garriott, the president of the Explorers Club which had members on the missing sub, wrote to the group, according to a spokesman. The crew aboard the OceanGate sub has likely run out of oxygen, given that they reportedly started with 96 hours of breathable air when they ventured underwater on Sunday morning. That is--if they even survived long enough to run out of oxygen. The United States Coast Guard announced Thursday afternoon that a remotely operated vehicle had found a debris field "discovered in the search area"; the Coast Guard is holding a press conference at 3 P.M. to share more. The submersible story is evolving quickly, but in the meantime, speculation about what could have happened is rampant. It's been hard to look away. The pressures at Titanic-wreck depths are crushing--"greater than the bite pressure exerted by some of the strongest jaws in the animal kingdom," as Sophie Bushwick at Scientific American put it.
Over 100 artists boycott venues that employ face-scanning tech
Over 100 music artists, including Tom Morello and Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine, have banded together to announce they are boycotting concert venues that use facial recognition technology, as originally reported by Rolling Stone. The artists cite a number of concerns, including privacy infringement and increased discrimination. The boycott was organized by a digital rights advocacy group called Fight for the Future and its ultimate goal is the elimination of face-scanning technology at all live events. Beyond the two founding members of Rage Against the Machine, other participating artists include Speedy Ortiz, Anti-Flag, Boots Riley and Deerhoof, among more than 80 others. The U.S. Coast Guard headed a unified command that involved commercial assets, research vehicles and military counterparts from Canada, France and the United Kingdom.

Dik Barton, the first British man to dive to the Titanic wreck, speculates what could have happened to the Titan submersible missing in the North Atlantic. The U.S. Coast Guard announced Thursday that the Canadian vessel Horizon Arctic deployed a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) "that has reached the sea floor and began its search" for the missing OceanGate Titan submarine. It is the first time during the search that a vessel is combing the floor of the Atlantic Ocean for the missing vessel and its five passengers. Previous search efforts have involved the use of aircraft and sonar. "The French vessel L'Atalante is preparing their ROV to enter the water," the Coast Guard also said.

Robotaxis keep tangling with firefighters on the streets of San Francisco, and the fire chief is fed up. "They're not ready for prime time," Chief Jeanine Nicholson said. Nicholson is talking about the driverless taxis from Waymo and Cruise that are picking up passengers and dropping them off in designated sections of the city. Now those companies want to rapidly expand service throughout the entire city, in unlimited numbers, in any kind of weather, day or night. And state regulators appear ready to approve their request.
