To Stop AI Killing Us All, First Regulate Deepfakes, Says Researcher Connor Leahy

TIME - Tech

Connor Leahy remembers the time he first realized AI was going to kill us all. It was 2019, and OpenAI's GPT-2 had just come out. Leahy downloaded the nascent large language model to his laptop, and took it along to a hackathon at the Technical University of Munich, where he was studying. In a tiny, cramped room, sitting on a couch surrounded by four friends, he booted up the AI system. Even though it could barely string coherent sentences together, Leahy identified in GPT-2 something that had been missing from every other AI model up until that point.

North Korea claims it tested nuclear-capable underwater drone capable of destroying naval vessels and ports

FOX News

North Korea tested a nuclear-capable underwater attack drone designed to destroy naval vessels and ports, it said Friday. North Korea's military said it conducted the test in the country's eastern waters in response to naval drills by the U.S., South Korea and Japan which ended Wednesday. The underwater drone is among a broad range of weapon systems North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un continues to test and develop as he expands his arsenal of nuclear-capable weapons. "Our army's underwater nuke-based countering posture is being further rounded off and its various maritime and underwater responsive actions will continue to deter the hostile military maneuvers of the navies of the U.S. and its allies," North Korea's Defense Ministry said in a statement. Japan will attempt to land on the moon TODAY - here's how to watch as its 'Moon Sniper' spacecraft navigates through '20 minutes of terror' descent

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Japan's Slim (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) mission is now only hours away from attempting its perilous landing on the lunar surface. If successful, Japan will become only the fifth country to land on the moon. But after America's first landing attempt in 50 years failed before even reaching the Moon, the risk of failure is clear. Japan's space agency, JAXA, is hoping to stack the odds in its favour by using precision navigation equipment, earning the mission the nickname'Moon Sniper'. Unlike previous missions, which have aimed for areas more than a mile across, Japan's lander will attempt to land no more than 330ft (100m) from its target.

Controversial tech company quietly deletes ban on 'military' use from terms of service

FOX News

OpenAI, the parent company of the popular artificial intelligence chatbot platform ChatGPT, altered its usage policy to get rid of a prohibition on using their technology for "military and warfare." OpenAI's usage policy specifically banned the use of its technology for "weapons development, military and warfare" before January 10 of this year, but that policy has since been updated to only disallow use that would "bring harm to others," according to a report from Computer World. "Our policy does not allow our tools to be used to harm people, develop weapons, for communications surveillance, or to injure others or destroy property," an OpenAI spokesperson told Fox News Digital. "There are, however, national security use cases that align with our mission. For example, we are already working with DARPA to spur the creation of new cybersecurity tools to secure open source software that critical infrastructure and industry depend on. It was not clear whether these beneficial use cases would have been allowed under'military' in our previous policies. So the goal with our policy update is to provide clarity and the ability to have these discussions."

Trump offers defense of presidential immunity, cites Obama civilian drone deaths: 'He meant well'

FOX News

Former President Trump joins'Hannity' for his first interview since his historic Iowa win to discuss his vision for America and previews the New Hampshire primary. Former President Trump objected to critics' arguments against presidential immunity, saying Thursday either himself or a future president could be stymied in urgent situations by circumspection around whether their executive actions might lead to punishment. Trump told Fox News that, should presidential immunity be muted, when a president is taking unilateral actions as chief executive, the opposing political party could immediately begin strategizing how to prosecute their rival. I'm talking about [how] any president has to have immunity, because if you take immunity away from the president, it's so important, you will have you have a president that's not going to be able to do anything," he said on "Hannity." "[W]hen he leaves office… the opposing party will indict the president for doing something that should have been good," he said, pointing to reports of mistakes or misfires made by his predecessor trying to eradicate terrorists. "Obama dropped missiles and they ended up hitting a kindergarten or a school or an apartment house.
