Federal judge denies Trump motion to dismiss classified records case based on Presidential Records Act

The federal judge presiding over former President Trump's classified records case has denied his motion to dismiss the charges based on the Presidential Records Act. U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon, last month, also dismissed Trump's motion to dismiss charges of retaining classified documents on the grounds of "unconstitutional vagueness." In a filing Thursday, Cannon denied the former president's motion to dismiss, saying that the charges against Trump "make no reference to the Presidential Records Act, nor do they rely on that statute for purposes of stating an offense." Cannon said the Presidential Records Act "does not provide a pre-trial basis to dismiss" the case, saying "all of which state cognizable offenses."

BANGKOK (AP) -- Myanmar's main pro-democracy resistance group said Thursday its armed wing launched drone attacks on the airport and a military headquarters in the capital, Naypyitaw, but the country's ruling military said it destroyed or seized more than a dozen drones used in the attacks. The opposition National Unity Government's "Defense Ministry" said in a statement that special units of the People's Defense Force used drones to attack the targets simultaneously. The group, known by the acronym NUG, calls itself the country's legitimate government, while the People's Defense Force is made up of many local resistance groups with a good deal of independence.

Myanmar's main pro-democracy opposition group says its armed wing has launched drone attacks on an airport and a military headquarters in the capital, Naypyidaw, but the military government says it has destroyed or seized more than a dozen drones used in the attacks. Military-run Myawaddy TV reported on Thursday that 13 fixed-wing drones were shot down over the capital of military-ruled Myanmar in a foiled attack with no casualties or damage to property. It said the foiled attack by "terrorists" sought to destroy important locations in Naypyidaw. Myawaddy did not mention what the targets were but broadcast an image showing nine small drones, several of which were damaged. Of the 13 drones, four carried explosives, the report said.
'AI-assisted genocide': Israel reportedly used database for Gaza kill lists
The Israeli military's reported use of an untested and undisclosed artificial intelligence-powered database to identify targets for its bombing campaign in Gaza has alarmed human rights and technology experts who said it could amount to "war crimes". The Israeli-Palestinian publication 972 Magazine and Hebrew-language media outlet Local Call reported recently that the Israeli army was isolating and identifying thousands of Palestinians as potential bombing targets using an AI-assisted targeting system called Lavender. "That database is responsible for drawing up kill lists of as many as 37,000 targets," Al Jazeera's Rory Challands, reporting from occupied East Jerusalem, said on Thursday. The unnamed Israeli intelligence officials who spoke to the media outlets said Lavender had an error rate of about 10 percent. "But that didn't stop the Israelis from using it to fast-track the identification of often low-level Hamas operatives in Gaza and bombing them," Challands said.
The Morning After: NASA has to make a time zone for the Moon
The White House has published a policy memo asking NASA to create a new time standard for the Moon by 2026. Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC) will establish an official time reference to help guide future lunar missions. The US, China, Japan, India and Russia have space missions to the Moon planned or completed. The European Space Agency is also trying to make a time zone outside of Earth'sโฆ zone. Given the Moon's weaker gravity, time moves slightly faster there. "The same clock we have on Earth would move at a different rate on the Moon," NASA space communications and navigation chief Kevin Coggins told Reuters.
Russian drones hit residential buildings in Ukraine's Kharkiv
Russian attacks on Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, have killed at least four people and injured 12, officials in the border region have said. Shahed drones struck two residential buildings in the city near the Russian border that has frequently been targeted during more than two years of war. Three rescue workers were killed overnight when Russia struck a multi-storey building twice in quick succession in a "densely populated district of Kharkiv", Igor Terekhov, the mayor of the eastern city, wrote on the Telegram app on Thursday. One person was killed in a drone attack on another building, he said. Ukraine's General Staff said 11 of 20 drones were shot down.
NASA names firms to develop rover for first crewed Moon mission since 1972
NASA has awarded contracts to three companies to develop vehicles for the first crewed missions to the Moon in more than five decades. Intuitive Machines, Lunar Outpost and Venturi Astrolab โ based in Texas, Colorado and California, respectively โ were chosen to create designs for the lunar rover under a contract worth up to 4.6bn, NASA said on Wednesday. NASA plans to pick one of the companies to carry out a test run for their Lunar Terrain Vehicle before the arrival of the crew for the Artemis 5 mission scheduled for 2029. The US space agency said the winning bid will be "able to handle the extreme conditions at the Moon's south pole" and "feature advanced technologies for power management, autonomous driving, and state-of-the-art communications and navigation systems." "We look forward to the development of the Artemis generation lunar exploration vehicle to help us advance what we learn at the Moon," Vanessa Wyche, director of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, said in a statement.
Generative AI and Teachers -- For Us or Against Us? A Case Study

We present insightful results of a survey on the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) by university teachers in their teaching activities. The transformation of education by GenAI, particularly large language models (LLMs), has been presenting both opportunities and challenges, including cheating by students. We prepared the online survey according to best practices and the questions were created by the authors, who have pedagogy experience. The survey contained 12 questions and a pilot study was first conducted. The survey was then sent to all teachers in multiple departments across different campuses of the university of interest in Sweden: Lule{\aa} University of Technology. The survey was available in both Swedish and English. The results show that 35 teachers (more than half) use GenAI out of 67 respondents. Preparation is the teaching activity with the most frequency that GenAI is used for and ChatGPT is the most commonly used GenAI. 59% say it has impacted their teaching, however, 55% say there should be legislation around the use of GenAI, especially as inaccuracies and cheating are the biggest concerns.
Direct Nash Optimization: Teaching Language Models to Self-Improve with General Preferences

This paper studies post-training large language models (LLMs) using preference feedback from a powerful oracle to help a model iteratively improve over itself. The typical approach for post-training LLMs involves Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), which traditionally separates reward learning and subsequent policy optimization. However, such a reward maximization approach is limited by the nature of "point-wise" rewards (such as Bradley-Terry model), which fails to express complex intransitive or cyclic preference relations. While advances on RLHF show reward learning and policy optimization can be merged into a single contrastive objective for stability, they yet still remain tethered to the reward maximization framework. Recently, a new wave of research sidesteps the reward maximization presumptions in favor of directly optimizing over "pair-wise" or general preferences. In this paper, we introduce Direct Nash Optimization (DNO), a provable and scalable algorithm that marries the simplicity and stability of contrastive learning with theoretical generality from optimizing general preferences. Because DNO is a batched on-policy algorithm using a regression-based objective, its implementation is straightforward and efficient. Moreover, DNO enjoys monotonic improvement across iterations that help it improve even over a strong teacher (such as GPT-4). In our experiments, a resulting 7B parameter Orca-2.5 model aligned by DNO achieves the state-of-the-art win-rate against GPT-4-Turbo of 33% on AlpacaEval 2.0 (even after controlling for response length), an absolute gain of 26% (7% to 33%) over the initializing model. It outperforms models with far more parameters, including Mistral Large, Self-Rewarding LM (70B parameters), and older versions of GPT-4.
A High-Fidelity Simulation Framework for Grasping Stability Analysis in Human Casualty Manipulation

Recently, there has been a growing interest in rescue robots due to their vital role in addressing emergency scenarios and providing crucial support in challenging or hazardous situations where human intervention is difficult. However, very few of these robots are capable of actively engaging with humans and undertaking physical manipulation tasks. This limitation is largely attributed to the absence of tools that can realistically simulate physical interactions, especially the contact mechanisms between a robotic gripper and a human body. In this letter, we aim to address key limitations in current developments towards robotic casualty manipulation. Firstly, we present an integrative simulation framework for casualty manipulation. We adapt a finite element method (FEM) tool into the grasping and manipulation scenario, and the developed framework can provide accurate biomechanical reactions resulting from manipulation. Secondly, we conduct a detailed assessment of grasping stability during casualty grasping and manipulation simulations. To validate the necessity and superior performance of the proposed high-fidelity simulation framework, we conducted a qualitative and quantitative comparison of grasping stability analyses between the proposed framework and the state-of-the-art multi-body physics simulations. Through these efforts, we have taken the first step towards a feasible solution for robotic casualty manipulation.
