For nearly two years, the world's biggest tech companies have said that AI will transform the web, your life, and the world. But first, they are remaking the humble search engine. Chatbots and search, in theory, are a perfect match. A standard Google search interprets a query and pulls up relevant results; tech companies have spent tens or hundreds of millions of dollars engineering chatbots that interpret human inputs, synthesize information, and provide fluent, useful responses. No more keyword refining or scouring Wikipedia--ChatGPT will do it all.

Now, as he prepares to return to the White House after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, the artificial intelligence landscape looks quite different. AI systems are advancing so rapidly that some leading executives of AI companies, such as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO and a prominent Trump backer, believe AI may become smarter than humans by 2026. Others offer a more general timeframe. In an essay published in September, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, "It is possible that we will have superintelligence in a few thousand days," but also noted that "it may take longer."

After former President Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris to clinch a second stint in the White House, he was greeted with a chorus of overzealous congratulations from the richest people in the United States. Obviously, Elon Musk, who has been campaigning for Trump and celebrated with him, was ecstatic and boastful. GameStop chief and meme-stock lord Ryan Cohen wrote, "God bless America!" and followed it up crudely with, "It's cool to be a white guy again." But the normie tech titans--even the liberal ones--were quick to bow before the new king.

Eight years ago, the November US election results profoundly shocked the small staff at Backchannel, the boutique tech publication I headed. The morning after, an editor posted on our Slack that working on a technology story seemed tone-deaf, if not futile. On a plane from New York to San Francisco, I wrote a column to answer that impulse, directed as much to myself and my colleagues as it was to readers. I argued that regardless of the enormity of this event, one thing hadn't changed; the biggest story of our time was still the technological revolution we were living through. Disruptive politicians, even destructive ones, may come and go--or refuse to go.


TSMC will reportedly stop making advanced AI chips for Chinese companies

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has suspended the production of advanced AI chips for Chinese companies, according to the Financial Times. The Taiwanese semiconductor chip manufacturer has reportedly notified its clients from China that it will stop producing AI chips for them, particularly models 7 nanometers and smaller, starting this Monday. If a Chinese company orders products that fall within that category, they'll have to go through an approval process that'll likely involve the US government. The manufacturer's new policy could be a direct result of its discovery that Huawei had used its chips in AI accelerators without its knowledge. A Canadian research firm called TechInsights was the one that notified the company that it discovered the presence of TSMC-manufactured products in Huawei's hardware.

When the US election result pushed shares in the artificial intelligence chip giant Nvidia to a record high and did the same to the price of bitcoin cryptocurrency, the market gave its verdict on what Trump redux means for at least parts of the technology world: a boom. Stock in the electric vehicle (EV) company Tesla surged by nearly 15%, which must have cheered its boss, Elon Musk, whom Trump called a "super genius" on Wednesday. But what about the people who do not own stock in Silicon Valley firms but do use their products? Tens of millions of users of Musk's social media platform, X, will now have to decide if they are willing to post in a place owned by a figure who looks likely to be a central part of Trump's administration. Musk could be tasked with "making recommendations for drastic reforms" aimed at the efficiency and performance of "the entire federal government", Trump has said.


Fake paramedic guilty of Tinder date rapes

A man who pretended to be a paramedic has been found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting women he met on an online dating website. Jamie Kadolski, 24, of Ladysmith Road, Norwich, was found guilty of committing nine sexual offences over an 18-month period. During the trial at Norwich Crown Court he denied the charges made by four different women, which he met on Tinder. The court had previously heard how the former ambulance call handler had told the women he was a paramedic and had used stickers to hide his real role on his work ID card.SuppliedKadolski worked in medical sector but never as a paramedic Kadolski worked as a call handler for the East of England Ambulance Service. The prosecution told the jury that he used stickers to hide his more junior role, so he could claim to the women he met that he was a paramedic.

But U.S. officials maintain that China can also use them to create new weapons systems, run disinformation attacks and surveil persecuted citizens. The Biden administration has steadily tightened its technology restrictions on China, and it is weighing another update to its rules. That has touched off a fight among lawmakers, administration officials and company executives over how much the United States should restrain its own industry.


North Korean troops 'enter' battle; Trump win throws Ukraine aid in doubt

North Korean troops are said to have clashed with Ukrainian forces in the Russian region of Kursk for the first time on Tuesday, the same day American voters re-elected Donald Trump for president, an isolationist who has argued against sending further military aid to Ukraine. "The first battles with North Korean soldiers open a new page of instability in the world," said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his evening address. "We must do everything to make this Russian step to expand the war – to really escalate it – to make this step a failure." Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov said the clashes were "small scale" and that the North Korean troops were not fighting as separate formations but were embedded in Russian units disguised as Buryats from the Russian Federation. On Saturday, Ukraine's military intelligence (GUR) had said Russia transferred more than 7,000 North Korean military personnel "to areas near Ukraine" in the last week of October – a much higher figure than the 3,000 North Korean soldiers South Korean and United States intelligence had said were in Russia's Kursk region on October 30.


Identifying and Decomposing Compound Ingredients in Meal Plans Using Large Language Models

This study explores the effectiveness of Large Language Models in meal planning, focusing on their ability to identify and decompose compound ingredients. We evaluated three models-GPT-4o, Llama-3 (70b), and Mixtral (8x7b)-to assess their proficiency in recognizing and breaking down complex ingredient combinations. Preliminary results indicate that while Llama-3 (70b) and GPT-4o excels in accurate decomposition, all models encounter difficulties with identifying essential elements like seasonings and oils. Despite strong overall performance, variations in accuracy and completeness were observed across models. These findings underscore LLMs' potential to enhance personalized nutrition but highlight the need for further refinement in ingredient decomposition. Future research should address these limitations to improve nutritional recommendations and health outcomes.
