The National Archives needs help from people with a special set of skills–reading cursive. The archival bureau is seeking volunteer citizen archivists to help them classify and/or transcribe more than 200 years worth of hand-written historical documents. Most of these are from the Revolutionary War-era, known for looped and flowing penmanship. "Reading cursive is a superpower," Suzanne Isaacs, a community manager with the National Archives Catalog told USA Today. "It's not just a matter of whether you learned cursive in school, it's how much you use cursive today."

One of NASA's stranded astronauts has finally left the International Space Station (ISS) after being stuck inside for eight months - but she's not headed home. Sunita Williams had a much-needed change of scenery Thursday during her first spacewalk since arriving on the ISS on June 6. Williams, the station's commander, had to tackle some overdue outdoor repair work alongside NASA's Nick Hague. The pair emerged as the orbiting lab sailed 260 miles above Turkmenistan in Central Asia. The spacewalk is expected to take six and a half hours, concluding at around 1pm ET.

Four days before he leaves office, US president Joe Biden has issued a sweeping cybersecurity directive ordering improvements to the way the government monitors its networks, buys software, uses artificial intelligence, and punishes foreign hackers. The 40-page executive order unveiled on Thursday is the Biden White House's final attempt to kickstart efforts to harness the security benefits of AI, roll out digital identities for US citizens, and close gaps that have helped China, Russia, and other adversaries repeatedly penetrate US government systems. The order "is designed to strengthen America's digital foundations and also put the new administration and the country on a path to continued success," Anne Neuberger, Biden's deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technology, told reporters on Wednesday. Kherson, Ukraine – In late November, Maria, a 22-year-old from Ponyativka in southern Ukraine, gave birth to a boy. She named her second child Ivan, after his father who had been dreaming about a son since he joined the army in 2023. Baby Ivan was the only child born that day in the district maternity hospital in Kherson, a city where more people die than are born and more decide to leave than stay. According to the local administration, just 15 babies were born in December while 256 people died and 311 fled. As Kherson dies out, its 83,000 residents – down from a population of more than 320,000 before the war – are focusing on how to survive relentless shelling by Russia and what locals have nicknamed "human safaris".
