Strikes on Qatar, Poland shake U.S. sway among friend and foe

The Japan Times

Strikes on Qatar, Poland shake U.S. sway among friend and foe U.S. President Donald Trump speaks at the Museum of the Bible in Washington on Sept. 8. Israeli strikes in Qatar and Russian drone incursions into Poland have challenged the U.S. leaders claims of global respect. The shock Israeli strike against Hamas officials in Doha, followed by Russian drones piercing the airspace of NATO ally Poland, delivered twin blows to President Donald Trump's longtime boast that friends and foes respect the U.S. under his leadership like never before. Trump voiced unhappiness with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for sending warplanes to attack the capital of Qatar, a major U.S. ally, but has otherwise resisted getting more involved. He has declined to denounce Russia's drone incursion into Poland, saying Thursday it could have been a mistake but regardless I'm not happy about anything having to do with that whole situation." Trump's removed attitude contrasts sharply with his repeated claims about his unique ability to solve the world's intractable conflicts. While he has conceded that Russia's war in Ukraine -- which he once pledged to resolve on his first day back in office -- has been more difficult than anticipated, he recently said President Vladimir Putin wants to make a deal for me."

Drone breaches Romanian airspace during Russian attack on Ukraine

The Japan Times

BUCHAREST - Romania scrambled fighter jets on Saturday when a drone breached the country's airspace during a Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure near the border, the defense ministry said. Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu said the F-16 pilots came close to taking down the drone as it was flying very low before it left national airspace toward Ukraine. A threat of drone strikes also prompted Poland to deploy aircraft and close an airport in the eastern city of Lublin on Saturday, three days after it shot down Russian drones in its airspace with the backing of aircraft from its NATO allies. Romania, a European Union and NATO state which shares a 650-km (400-mile) border with Ukraine, has had Russian drone fragments fall onto its territory repeatedly since Russia began waging war on its neighbor. On Saturday, it scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and later two Eurofighters -- part of German air policing missions in Romania -- and warned citizens in the southeastern county of Tulcea near the Danube and its Ukrainian border to take cover, the defense ministry said in a statement.

Big Businesses Are Doing Carbon Dioxide Removal All Wrong

WIRED

The technology is needed to limit global warming. But corporations are supporting it in lieu of reducing emissions. Achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 will require removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world's foremost authority on the topic. But only some types of carbon removal are actually effective--and these are largely not the kind that major companies are investing in. A new report from the NewClimate Institute, a European think tank, finds that 35 of the world's biggest businesses are leaning on short-term tree-planting and other forms of "nondurable" carbon removal in order to say they've neutralized some of their climate pollution.
