A Startup Used AI to Make a Psychedelic Without the Trip

WIRED

Mindstate Design Labs, backed by Silicon Valley power players, has created what its CEO calls "the least psychedelic psychedelic that's psychoactive." While there's growing evidence that psychedelic drugs can effectively treat severe mental health conditions, especially in cases where traditional treatments have failed, they still come with downsides. Their hallucinogenic effects can be scary and overwhelming, with dosing sessions lasting several hours. Good treatment is heavily reliant on the individual's mindset going into a session and the environment in which they receive it. And though it's rare, psychedelics can sometimes worsen existing mental illness.

Adviser to UK minister claimed AI firms would never have to compensate creatives

The Guardian

A senior ministerial aide said AI companies would never have to compensate creatives for using their content to train their systems, in a statement that has alarmed campaigners demanding Labour deliver a fairer deal for musicians, artists and writers from the tech industry. Kirsty Innes, recently appointed as a special adviser to Liz Kendall, the secretary of state for science, innovation and technology, said "whether or not you philosophically believe the big AI firms should compensate content creators, they in practice will never legally have to". The government is consulting on how creatives should be compensated by AI firms and only last week leading British artists including Mick Jagger, Kate Bush and Paul McCartney urged Keir Starmer to stand up for creators' human rights and protect their work. Innes, who previously worked at the Tony Blair Institute (TBI) thinktank, has deleted the statement, which she posted to X in February, seven months before she became a ministerial adviser. In the deleted posts, seen by the Guardian, she said: "A lot of this has already happened and it can continue to happen outside the UK, whatever our laws say."

Russia says no choice but war after Trump U-turn on Ukraine

How is Russia replenishing its military? What is a'coalition of the willing'? How China forgot promises and'debts' to Ukraine How are Europe, the US pulling apart on Ukraine? The Kremlin has announced it has "no alternative" but to continue waging war, as it pushed back on United States President Donald Trump's sudden sea change towards Ukraine that saw him brand Russia a "paper tiger". Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov hit back at Trump's claim that Ukraine could in effect win the war, declaring on Wednesday that Russia would be continuing its offensive on Ukraine "to ensure our interests and achieve the goals".

How Ukraine Gamified Drone Warfare

One afternoon this spring, Mykhailo Fedorov, a minister in the wartime government of Ukraine, turned up the volume on his laptop and played a video to illustrate his latest innovation. Its purpose, he explained, was to make the experience of combat feel more like a video game to Ukrainian troops--or as he put it, "to gamify" the war. The clip showed a series of aerial strikes, each filmed from the vantage of a combat drone. One of them, apparently flying by night, had used its thermal-imaging camera to detect an enemy soldier in what looked like a field or forest.

A New Era of Vaccine Federalism

The New Yorker

As confidence in the C.D.C. wanes, states are asserting more control over their vaccine policies, creating a fragmented public-health system. Last week, former officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned members of Congress that Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the Secretary of Health and Human Services, was endangering the nation's welfare by dismissing evidence and expertise in favor of his own vaccine skepticism. Kennedy "censored C.D.C. science, politicized its processes, and stripped leaders of independence," Debra Houry, the agency's former chief medical officer, said in a hearing this past Wednesday. The following day, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices ()--the scientific panel that influences U.S. vaccine policy more than any other body--began a chaotic and contentious two-day meeting about updating the country's vaccination recommendations. The committee's members had been handpicked by Kennedy, some of them joining just days before. Several of's decisions, which were announced last week, will have limited practical impact.
