Biological Valuation Map of Flanders: A Sentinel-2 Imagery Analysis

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In recent years, machine learning has become crucial in remote sensing analysis, particularly in the domain of Land-use/Land-cover (LULC). The synergy of machine learning and satellite imagery analysis has demonstrated significant productivity in this field, as evidenced by several studies. A notable challenge within this area is the semantic segmentation mapping of land usage over extensive territories, where the accessibility of accurate land-use data and the reliability of ground truth land-use labels pose significant difficulties. For example, providing a detailed and accurate pixel-wise labeled dataset of the Flanders region, a first-level administrative division of Belgium, can be particularly insightful. Yet there is a notable lack of regulated, formalized datasets and workflows for such studies in many regions globally. This paper introduces a comprehensive approach to addressing these gaps. We present a densely labeled ground truth map of Flanders paired with Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. Our methodology includes a formalized dataset division and sampling method, utilizing the topographic map layout 'Kaartbladversnijdingen,' and a detailed semantic segmentation model training pipeline. Preliminary benchmarking results are also provided to demonstrate the efficacy of our approach.

Harnessing Deep Learning of Point Clouds for Inverse Control of 3D Shape Morphing

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Shape-morphing devices, a crucial branch in soft robotics, hold significant application value in areas like human-machine interfaces, biomimetic robotics, and tools for interacting with biological systems. To achieve three-dimensional (3D) programmable shape morphing (PSM), the deployment of array-based actuators is essential. However, a critical knowledge gap impeding the development of 3D PSM is the challenge of controlling the complex systems formed by these soft actuator arrays. This study introduces a novel approach, for the first time, representing the configuration of shape morphing devices using point cloud data and employing deep learning to map these configurations to control inputs. We propose Shape Morphing Net (SMNet), a method that realizes the regression from point cloud data to high-dimensional continuous vectors. Applied to previous 2D PSM actuator arrays, SMNet significantly enhances control precision from 82.23% to 97.68%. Further, we extend its application to 3D PSM devices with three different actuator mechanisms, demonstrating the universal applicability of SMNet to the control of 3D shape morphing technologies. In our demonstrations, we confirm the efficacy of inverse control, where 3D PSM devices successfully replicate target shapes. These shapes are obtained either through 3D scanning of physical objects or via 3D modeling software. The results show that within the deformable range of 3D PSM devices, accurate reproduction of the desired shapes is achievable. The findings of this research represent a substantial advancement in soft robotics, particularly for applications demanding intricate 3D shape transformations, and establish a foundational framework for future developments in the field.

Mapping-to-Parameter Nonlinear Functional Regression with Novel B-spline Free Knot Placement Algorithm

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We propose a novel approach to nonlinear functional regression, called the Mapping-to-Parameter function model, which addresses complex and nonlinear functional regression problems in parameter space by employing any supervised learning technique. Central to this model is the mapping of function data from an infinite-dimensional function space to a finite-dimensional parameter space. This is accomplished by concurrently approximating multiple functions with a common set of B-spline basis functions by any chosen order, with their knot distribution determined by the Iterative Local Placement Algorithm, a newly proposed free knot placement algorithm. In contrast to the conventional equidistant knot placement strategy that uniformly distributes knot locations based on a predefined number of knots, our proposed algorithms determine knot location according to the local complexity of the input or output functions. The performance of our knot placement algorithms is shown to be robust in both single-function approximation and multiple-function approximation contexts. Furthermore, the effectiveness and advantage of the proposed prediction model in handling both function-on-scalar regression and function-on-function regression problems are demonstrated through several real data applications, in comparison with four groups of state-of-the-art methods.

Data-Centric Evolution in Autonomous Driving: A Comprehensive Survey of Big Data System, Data Mining, and Closed-Loop Technologies

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The aspiration of the next generation's autonomous driving (AD) technology relies on the dedicated integration and interaction among intelligent perception, prediction, planning, and low-level control. There has been a huge bottleneck regarding the upper bound of autonomous driving algorithm performance, a consensus from academia and industry believes that the key to surmount the bottleneck lies in data-centric autonomous driving technology. Recent advancement in AD simulation, closed-loop model training, and AD big data engine have gained some valuable experience. However, there is a lack of systematic knowledge and deep understanding regarding how to build efficient data-centric AD technology for AD algorithm self-evolution and better AD big data accumulation. To fill in the identified research gaps, this article will closely focus on reviewing the state-of-the-art data-driven autonomous driving technologies, with an emphasis on the comprehensive taxonomy of autonomous driving datasets characterized by milestone generations, key features, data acquisition settings, etc. Furthermore, we provide a systematic review of the existing benchmark closed-loop AD big data pipelines from the industrial frontier, including the procedure of closed-loop frameworks, key technologies, and empirical studies. Finally, the future directions, potential applications, limitations and concerns are discussed to arouse efforts from both academia and industry for promoting the further development of autonomous driving. ProNav: Proprioceptive Traversability Estimation for Legged Robot Navigation in Outdoor Environments

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We propose a novel method, ProNav, which uses proprioceptive signals for traversability estimation in challenging outdoor terrains for autonomous legged robot navigation. Our approach uses sensor data from a legged robot's joint encoders, force, and current sensors to measure the joint positions, forces, and current consumption respectively to accurately assess a terrain's stability, resistance to the robot's motion, risk of entrapment, and crash. Based on these factors, we compute the appropriate robot gait to maximize stability, which leads to reduced energy consumption. Our approach can also be used to predict imminent crashes in challenging terrains and execute behaviors to preemptively avoid them. We integrate ProNav with an exteroceptive-based method to navigate real-world environments with dense vegetation, high granularity, negative obstacles, etc. Our method shows an improvement up to 40% in terms of success rate and up to 15.1% reduction in terms of energy consumption compared to exteroceptive-based methods.

Japan's SLIM lunar spacecraft landed upside down on the moon

Engadget

Shortly after Japan's space agency became the fifth country to land a spacecraft on the surface of the moon, its scientists discovered the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) unfortunately touched down upside down. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said that the SLIM landed on the lunar surface on January 20 but it knew it might have bigger problems due to an issue with power generation. Just hours after making landfall, JAXA expected the power to run out, before it ultimately did. SLIM met the moon's surface about 55 meters east of the original target landing site, JAXA said. The agency did get all of the technical information related to its navigation prior to landing and ultimately becoming stationary on the lunar surface.

We used AI and satellite imagery to map ocean activities that take place out of sight, including fishing, shipping and energy development

AIHub

Humans are racing to harness the ocean's vast potential to power global economic growth. Worldwide, ocean-based industries such as fishing, shipping and energy production generate at least US 1.5 trillion in economic activity each year and support 31 million jobs. This value has been increasing exponentially over the past 50 years and is expected to double by 2030. Transparency in monitoring this "blue acceleration" is crucial to prevent environmental degradation, overexploitation of fisheries and marine resources, and lawless behavior such as illegal fishing and human trafficking. Open information also will make countries better able to manage vital ocean resources effectively. But the sheer size of the ocean has made tracking industrial activities at a broad scale impractical – until now.

DyEdgeGAT: Dynamic Edge via Graph Attention for Early Fault Detection in IIoT Systems

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), condition monitoring sensor signals from complex systems often exhibit nonlinear and stochastic spatial-temporal dynamics under varying conditions. These complex dynamics make fault detection particularly challenging. While previous methods effectively model these dynamics, they often neglect the evolution of relationships between sensor signals. Undetected shifts in these relationships can lead to significant system failures. Furthermore, these methods frequently misidentify novel operating conditions as faults. Addressing these limitations, we propose DyEdgeGAT (Dynamic Edge via Graph Attention), a novel approach for early-stage fault detection in IIoT systems. DyEdgeGAT's primary innovation lies in a novel graph inference scheme for multivariate time series that tracks the evolution of relationships between time series, enabled by dynamic edge construction. Another key innovation of DyEdgeGAT is its ability to incorporate operating condition contexts into node dynamics modeling, enhancing its accuracy and robustness. We rigorously evaluated DyEdgeGAT using both a synthetic dataset, simulating varying levels of fault severity, and a real-world industrial-scale multiphase flow facility benchmark with diverse fault types under varying operating conditions and detection complexities. The results show that DyEdgeGAT significantly outperforms other baseline methods in fault detection, particularly in the early stages with low severity, and exhibits robust performance under novel operating conditions.
