Why Haven't We Met Aliens Yet? Because They've Evolved into AI
While traveling in Western Samoa many years ago, I met a young Harvard University graduate student researching ants. He invited me on a hike into the jungles to assist with his search for the tiny insect. He told me his goal was to discover a new species of ant, in hopes it might be named after him one day. Whenever I look up at the stars at night pondering the cosmos, I think of my ant collector friend, kneeling in the jungle with a magnifying glass, scouring the earth. I think of him, because I believe in aliens--and I've often wondered if aliens are doing the same to us.
Machine Learning for Easier Dieting
"I had a half-cup of oatmeal, with two-tablesoons of maple syrup and a cup of coffee. Oh, I put a handful of blueberries in the oatmeal, and there was milk in the coffee. Ask someone what they had for breakfast, and this is the kind of description you might get. And that's one of the reasons keeping track of food intake is such a problem for tech that's meant to help a person lose weight or stick to a diet for other reasons. Logging food for nutrition and calories is important to sticking to a diet, according to Susan Roberts, director of the Boston-based Energy Metabolism Lab at Tufts University. "It makes people more self-aware about the junk they are eating and how little they actually enjoy it, and the shock of huge portions, et cetera.
Machine learning on machine learning software: It's closer than you think #BigDataSV
As the tech world pivots on game-changing applications, data scientists rise to the occasion. Such is the case with Holden Karau, principal software engineer of Big Data at IBM and coauthor of Learning Spark. When asked about the current renovations within Spark, Karau said she sees this time as an "opportunity to get rid of dead weight" by streamlining certain processes. For example, she cited getting functional and relative queries to talk to each other within Spark. Two area of expansion include sequencing and machine learning.
Is the End of Computer Literacy in Sight? - Smarter With Gartner
The working relationship between people and technology is fundamentally shifting. Employees used to learn the language of business applications to use them. A world where Shift F9 created a new line item entry in their expenses. Since then, advances in user experience design have masked the language of technology with buttons and guided navigation. The user training toll has decreased but it has by no means gone away.
More Seattle brainpower coming to artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence is getting bigger and smarter right here in Seattle. The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, a sister company to Paul Allen's Institute for Brain Science, plans to hire 25 people in the next year as it prepares to take its Aristo technology to the eighth grade, moving on from teaching it fourth-grade science. The company plans to take over about 6,000 additional square feet of space in its headquarters on North Northlake Way near Gas Works Park and grow its employee ranks, said CEO Oren Etzioni. Etzioni leads the small team of 50 with Chief Operating Officer James Allard, and the executives are preparing for a hiring binge. Artificial intelligence has been all over the news lately, and this time not solely over fears that machines may eliminate people's jobs.
Amazon plans fifth fulfillment center in the Inland Empire
As Amazon Inc. moves to shrink delivery times from days to hours, it's spreading its enormous inventory across a growing network of fulfillment centers on the outskirts of the nation's biggest cities. Within this strategy, San Bernardino has emerged as a key player thanks to its abundance of affordable land, proximity to ports and access to one of the nation's biggest consumer markets. Amazon this week doubled down on the city 60 miles east of Los Angeles by announcing plans for its second fulfillment center there, a cavernous 1.1-million-square-foot facility that will briefly warehouse items such as books, electronics and toys while adding 1,000 new full-time jobs. "San Bernardino has proven to be an important part of Amazon's growth in California, and we are proud to continue creating jobs and helping support the economy here in the Inland Empire," Akash Chauhan, Amazon's vice president of North American operations, said in a prepared statement. The new facility will be Amazon's fifth fulfillment center in the Inland Empire and seventh in California.

L&D QuestionTime - Carrie Remington - Learning Professional Network
In this week's QuestionTime we hear the views and opinions of Head of Learning & Development, Carrie Remington. In your opinion, what is the biggest anxiety within the world of learning and development at the moment? There's no doubt about it: technology has disrupted, and continues to disrupt, the world of business… and, of course, the learning and development industry. While innovative designers are often keen to maximise the potential of new advancements, in reality, there is often a lack of understanding throughout the wider organisation – which can cause delays in digital transformation. Misconceptions can also lead to poor early-adoption rates of certain technologies, making it difficult for even the most forward-thinking companies to lead in learning.
Machine Learning: Why Now? Your questions answered here and at #StrataHadoop
Machine learning is not new. SAS has been doing it for over 20 years and some early machine learning papers date back to the 50's. So why is it one of the hottest topics at the Strata Hadoop World conference later this week? Clearly, Hadoop is playing a major role in the increased focus on machine learning. Patrick Hall is a Senior Machine Learning Scientist at SAS.
