Deep learning is a new chapter for every sector: Andrew Ng, Coursera

@machinelearnbot

The co-founder of online education platform Coursera has made it his mission to build talent for AI through his new project, deeplearning.ai. Andrew is preparing courses on deep-learning--advanced AI inspired by the human brain's neural networks--that will be available on Coursera. In an interview with ET's J Vignesh, the former chief scientist at Baidu also spoke about how technology disruption can help countries like India leapfrog and take a lead in the new world. Edited excerpts: How are we progressing towards the concept of singularity, or general intelligence, from sector-specific artificial intelligence? That is hard to project.

Interactive holograms of Holocaust survivors debut at Illinois museum

The Japan Times

A group of young kids is entranced -- all the more so because Sella is not actually there. Her likeness is being beamed in the form of an interactive and moving hologram, part of a first-of-its-kind exhibition debuting this weekend at the Illinois Holocaust Museum, which aims to preserve accounts of a fast-disappearing generation. "She has their undivided attention," said teacher Samantha O'Neill of Chicago's Northside Catholic Academy. "It really does look like she is sitting on the stage in front of you." The exhibit uses voice-recognition technology and machine learning to let visitors ask questions about survivors' World War II ordeals and hear answers that will grow more relevant as the technology learns.

Does Regulating Artificial Intelligence Save Humanity or Just Stifle Innovation?

#artificialintelligence

Some people are afraid that heavily armed artificially intelligent robots might take over the world, enslaving humanity--or perhaps exterminating us. These people, including tech-industry billionaire Elon Musk and eminent physicist Stephen Hawking, say artificial intelligence technology needs to be regulated to manage the risks. But Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg disagree, saying the technology is not nearly advanced enough for those worries to be realistic. As someone who researches how AI works in robotic decision-making, drones and self-driving vehicles, I've seen how beneficial it can be. I've developed AI software that lets robots working in teams make individual decisions as part of collective efforts to explore and solve problems.

Meet the High Schooler Shaking Up Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Since its founding by Elon Musk and others nearly two years ago, nonprofit research lab OpenAI has published dozens of research papers. One posted online Thursday is different: Its lead author is still in high school. The wunderkind is Kevin Frans, a senior currently working on his college applications. He trained his first neural net--the kind of system that tech giants use to recognize your voice or face--two years ago, at the age of 15. Inspired by reports of software mastering Atari games and the board game Go, he has since been reading research papers and building pieces of what they described.

5 TED Talks on AI to watch

#artificialintelligence

How is artificial intelligence changing the world? Will it replace half your employees? Earlier this year at the MIT Sloan CIO Symposium, automation experts Andrew McAfee and Erik Brynjolfsson, co-authors of "The Second Machine Age: Work, Progress, and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies," declared that if anything, we have "underestimated" automation's likely effects on the workforce. An explosion of data is fueling rapid advances in machine learning, Brynjolfsson notes. As a result, jobs involving pattern matching, such as pathologists, may experience severe disruption, he says.

Amazon offers $250,000 prize fund for Alexa skills aimed at kids

Engadget

Amazon's latest bid to boost its smart assistant's skill set is centered around kids. Alexa Skills Challenge: Kids wants Alexa tricks aimed at kids under the age of 13, with the best ones claiming cash prizes from a fund of $250,000. The overall winner will claim $25,000, so a farm yard animal noise generator won't cut it. All eligible participants in the challenge will also pick up a limited-edition Echo Dot, and there's dedicated prizes for high school and university student devs. Amazon is looking for educational or fun vocal tricks for its voice assistant profile, having added kids skill functionality back in August.

Transforming HE through machine learning

#artificialintelligence

Undoubtedly, the digital revolution has transformed nearly every industry. At the forefront of this transformation are Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). While many industries, like transportation and retail, have become leaders in adopting emerging technology to improve their business models, the higher education industry has fallen behind. This gap is present in some lower levels of schooling as well, but, historically, we've seen that larger university settings have encountered more challenges in the path to adoption. Prior to entering higher education, students are exposed to, and leverage, various forms of technology.

Best Method to Learn Essential Machine Learning Skills Fast

@machinelearnbot

The best method to pick up essential machine learning skills fast is to practice building your skills with small easy to understand datasets. This technique helps you build your processes using interesting real-world data that are small enough for you to look at in excel or WEKA. In this article, you will learn of a high-quality database with plenty of datasets and some tips to help you focus your time on what matters to you! Following online tutorials will keep you trapped in a dependent mindset that will limit your growth because you're not learning HOW to solve any problem. Your learning how to apply a specific solution to a particular type of problem.
