The University of Agder invites applications for a full-time fixed-term position for a period of three years as PhD Research Fellow. The position is linked to the Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and is located in Grimstad, Norway. The starting date is as soon as possible or by agreement. The Department of ICT hosts three research groups including nine Professors, 20 Associate Professors/Assistant professors and about 20 Research Fellows, pursuing a variety of research areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), wireless communications, network administration, and embedded systems. This open position is associated with Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR) and targets development of a Chatbot based Personal Teaching Assistant (educator).


Will AI be a bane or boon for education?

The advent of artificial intelligence could increase societal inequalities, or it could provide teachers with the tools to customize instruction for every individual student. The outcome comes down to how our society lays the groundwork for the rapid changes AI promises to deliver. Those are a few of the conclusions offered Thursday by a panel of experts at a Politico event titled "The Age of AI: The Future of Work, Workers and Education." As it currently operates, "education is intended to reproduce social norms," said Gerry McCartney, CIO of Purdue University. "To the extent that we can open up all [aspects] of education to all citizens through technology, we can move away from this factory model of education … which really only suits" entrenched interests.

Researchers and startups are working overtime to create new tools to improve teaching methods and career counseling. Additionally, President Emmanuel Macron recently announced that France's artificial intelligence strategy would focus on higher education and research. Many EdTech startups are already tackling A.I. but where do French schools stand? According to Audencia innovation director Valérie Claude-Gaudillat, "A.I. remains very disconnected from our coursework and teaching methods. It's rarely discussed in the classroom and that is a problem."

Drone Owners Of Hong Kong Would Require A License To Fly

The Hong Kong's Civil Aviation Authority (HKCAA) suggests that UAV users may need to register their drones with authorities, undertake training, pass tests and meet certain insurance requirements. As per the new rules, drone weighing over 9 ounces would need to be registered and the operators need to undertake short web-based training. But before making any changes, Hong Kong needs to go through a three month period of public consultation. The proposal will also include making certain parts of the island into no-fly zones. Still, there are number of countries that require proper registration and a license to fly.


Blizzard Is Trying To Teach Computers To Spot Overwatch Jerks

Despite arriving too late to prevent what some might call a full-blown crisis, Overwatch's anti-toxicity efforts seem to be bearing fruit. The next step in the battle, says game director Jeff Kaplan, might be having computers, not humans, find the bad actors. "We've been experimenting with machine learning," Kaplan told me during an interview at Blizzard's offices yesterday. "We've been trying to teach our games what toxic language is, which is kinda fun. The thinking there is you don't have to wait for a report to determine that something's toxic. Our goal is to get it so you don't have to wait for a report to happen."

Researchers teach AI to think like a dog and find out what they know about the world

What can artificial intelligence learn from dogs? Quite a lot, say researchers from the University of Washington and Allen Institute for AI. They recently trained neural networks to interpret and predict the behavior of canines. Their results, they say, show that animals could provide a new source of training data for AI systems -- including those used to control robots. To train AI to think like a dog, the researchers first needed data. They collected this in the form of videos and motion information captured from a single dog, a Malamute named Kelp.


CEIA launch new initiative to stimulate discussion on Artificial Intelligence in schools

"With devices like Alexa Echo, Apple HomePod and SmartLock in our homes, the'intelligent personal assistant' SIRI and Google in our pockets, we have to become more aware that we are giving devices an incredible amount of personal data and control to machines. Our young people are growing up where this is normal practice and more and more common. This initiative is about giving students the opportunity to reflect on the control and information that we freely hand over, and about examining some of the potential outcomes in society as we give more and more to machines and machine learning. HAL was a concept 50 years ago, a warning of sorts, that is still valid today. We want the students to have fun, and to see the opportunities as well as the challenges of the incredible technology we have in our world today and potentially tomorrow," said Valerie Cowman, Chair of the Skills & Education Committee of the CEIA – Cork's Technology Network.


What Happened? Leveraging VerbNet to Predict the Effects of Actions in Procedural Text

Our goal is to answer questions about paragraphs describing processes (e.g., photosynthesis). Texts of this genre are challenging because the effects of actions are often implicit (unstated), requiring background knowledge and inference to reason about the changing world states. To supply this knowledge, we leverage VerbNet to build a rulebase (called the Semantic Lexicon) of the preconditions and effects of actions, and use it along with commonsense knowledge of persistence to answer questions about change. Our evaluation shows that our system, ProComp, significantly outperforms two strong reading comprehension (RC) baselines. Our contributions are two-fold: the Semantic Lexicon rulebase itself, and a demonstration of how a simulation-based approach to machine reading can outperform RC methods that rely on surface cues alone. Since this work was performed, we have developed neural systems that outperform ProComp, described elsewhere (Dalvi et al., NAACL'18). However, the Semantic Lexicon remains a novel and potentially useful resource, and its integration with neural systems remains a currently unexplored opportunity for further improvements in machine reading about processes.
