Chinese school uses facial recognition to make kids pay attention

Engadget

Civilian surveillance in China has seen a boom in recent times, with facial recognition leading the charge in the technologies used to keep tabs on the population. Police are scanning travelers with facial recognition glasses, authorities are using the tech to monitor ethnic minorities -- now the Orwellian technology has a new target: kids. Three cameras have been installed above a blackboard at Hangzhou Number 11 High School in eastern China. The system identifies seven different facial expressions -- neutral, happy, sad, disappointed, angry, scared and surprised -- to determine whether children are focused on their lessons, and if they're not, the computer will feed this back to the teacher. So far the technology is in just one classroom, but will roll out across the school by the summer. What else can surveillance cameras do in classroom other than exam supervision?

Humanizing the Future in a Digital World

#artificialintelligence

The University of Arizona College of Humanities is exploring the intersection of technology and humanities, focusing on the vital role of human context and perspective in guiding digital innovations such as big data, artificial intelligence and robotics. Launching this week, the Dorrance Lecture Series brings together faculty, students and outside guests to examine the relationship between so-called disruptive technologies and human cultures. The first symposium, "Humanities Innovators in a Tech World," is Thursday and Friday in the Integrated Learning Center, Room 120, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. "As technological advances bring us closer to a digital future, the humanities become more important than ever in helping to understand what makes us human, especially as those same technological advances bring greater connectivity to all people across the globe," says Alain-Philippe Durand, dean of the College of Humanities. In the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the fusion of technologies is blurring the differences between the physical, digital and biological. Advances such as artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning, genetic algorithms, collaborative commerce, additive manufacturing, spatial computing and genetic engineering will impact the future, in ways both predictable and unpredictable.

Practical OpenCV 3 Image Processing with Python

@machinelearnbot

OpenCV is a native cross-platform C Library for computer vision, machine learning, and image processing. It is increasingly being adopted in Python for developing applications to process visual data such as photographs or videos. OpenCV has C /C, Python, and Java interfaces with support for Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS, and Android, and offers extensive libraries with over 500 functions. This video demonstrates how to develop a series of intermediate-to-advanced projects using OpenCV and Python, rather than teaching the core concepts of OpenCV in theoretical lessons. Instead, the working projects developed in this video teach the viewer how to apply their theoretical knowledge to topics such as image manipulation, augmented reality, object tracking, 3D scene reconstruction, statistical learning, and object categorization.

This Global Company Is Using AI And E-Learning To Scale

Forbes - Tech

Companies everywhere are facing the challenge of doing their work faster and cheaper, but those who operate globally face additional barriers that make it difficult to drive metrics. Some companies are turning to AI, or artificial intelligence, to handle some of the predictable and repeatable behaviors. If you thought that it was just the giant technology companies using AI to innovate, think again. A recent survey by Spiceworks found that 40% of large businesses will implement one or more intelligent assistants or AI chat bots by 2019. Companies in every industry, of every size, are investing in AI to improve their processes.

The Richest Indian-Owned Company Is Emerging As A Pivotal Player In India's Startup Ecosystem

Forbes - Tech

Last month, the music streaming arm of telecom company Jio, Reliance Jio Music, and music and audio streaming service Saavn merged to jointly strengthen their foothold in the digital music market, which is expected to cross $460 million (Rs.3,100 crore) in revenue by 2020. The two music streaming companies will be integrated into a combined $1 billion entity that leverages the media streaming expertise of Saavn with the 4G internet connectivity of telecom company Jio. Soon after the announcement of this merger, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), also agreed to pick up a 72.69% stake in the AI-based online education startup Embibe, with a proposal to invest $180 million over the next three years. This foray of India's petrochemical giant Reliance in the startup industry was the culmination of a plan put into motion in 2016, when RIL's owner, the richest Indian on Forbes Billionaires 2018 list, Mukesh Ambani, addressed its 42nd annual general meeting in Mumbai. During the address he stated that Reliance Industries was setting up a $743 million (Rs.5,000 crore) fund, called the Jio Digital India Startup Fund, to invest in digital businesses.
