AI Can't Reason Why

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

Put simply, today's machine-learning programs can't tell whether a crowing rooster makes the sun rise, or the other way around. Whatever volumes of data a machine analyzes, it cannot understand what a human gets intuitively. From the time we are infants, we organize our experiences into causes and effects. The questions "Why did this happen?" Suppose, for example, that a drugstore decides to entrust its pricing to a machine learning program that we'll call Charlie.

How Artificial Intelligence is Revolutionizing Early Childhood Education - The Tech Edvocate

#artificialintelligence

Most scholars will agree that the early childhood years set the stage for future academic success in middle school, high school, and secondary learning institutions. These formative years are essential for creating an environment where children learn the foundational skills necessary for academic success. With modern classrooms making a subtle shift to artificial intelligence and edtech, these years are seeing revolutionary change. Do you have a hard time believing that even our elementary-aged kids can benefit from exposure to this technology? Review a few of these compelling arguments for how the introduction of AI into the elementary school classroom could improve the quality of education everywhere.

Etsy opens machine learning centre in Toronto Internet of Business

#artificialintelligence

NEWSBYTE Etsy, the ecommerce website that focuses on handmade or vintage items, is opening its third machine learning centre, and its first in Canada. It is expected to open this autumn. The US-based company already has machine learning centres in Brooklyn, New York, and in San Francisco. The aim of the centres is to deepen users and customers' relationship with the retail platform, learning their preferences and the types of item that are offered for sale, creating a smarter and more intuitive system over time. "Etsy is dedicated to creating opportunities for creative entrepreneurs across Canada, and the addition of the Machine Learning Center of Excellence will deepen Etsy's roots in Toronto's robust tech community," said Mike Fisher, Etsy CTO.

WriteLab acquired by Chegg – Reach Capital – Medium

#artificialintelligence

One of our first investments out of Reach Capital was in a scrappy writing startup spun out of UC Berkeley, founded by English professor Don McQuade and his star student and TA Matthew Ramirez. They set out to solve their own problem: they were drowning in grading papers and didn't feel as if they were giving adequate feedback to their students. Yesterday, Chegg announced their acquisition of WriteLab, the AI-driven writing feedback platform. Grounded in a research-based pedagogy, WriteLab relies on machine learning algorithms to provide different categories of advice -- grammatical comments, logic, clarity and concision. WriteLab acts as a teacher's assistant, helping students polish their writing before turning it in.

No, Google Duplex Hasn't Passed the Turing Test – Member Feature Stories – Medium

#artificialintelligence

Am I the only one who feels a tad underwhelmed by Google Duplex? My social media feeds are filled with gushing platitudes over the virtual assistant's handling of a simple haircut appointment. Some are even claiming the Turing Test has been passed. Putting aside the ethical ramifications of abdicating such tasks to the robots (a topic worthy of its own post), I'm left wondering: is this how low we've set the bar for human conversation? Google Duplex may score top marks for authentic tone and delightful mannerisms, but the topic of conversation was hardly riveting.

Artificial Intelligence: Hero Or Villain For Higher Education?

#artificialintelligence

There's often a fine line between hero and villain, and by most accounts, artificial intelligence (AI) is on the villain side, sucking jobs out of the economy. These days you can't throw a rock without hitting some pundit prognosticating on the millions of jobs that will be lost from AI. One oft-cited Oxford University study predicted 47% of jobs are in jeopardy. But while AI conjures up robots and dystopian science fiction movies, it isn't magic. Today's AI consists of algorithms developed with "training data" that improve over time, otherwise known as machine learning.

How can CIOs help corporate digital transformation?

#artificialintelligence

Without constant learning and adapting, businesses risk becoming dinosaurs. The world, after all, is in constant flux, driven by the technology needed to help integrate into organisations. According to a recent (December 2017) report from the McKinsey Global Institute ('Jobs Lost Jobs Gained'), "Automation will bring big shifts to the world of work as AI and robotics change or replace some jobs but others are created". In the UK, 20% of current work activities will be automated by 2030. Some authors claim that as little as 35% of current skills will still be relevant in five years – others put it at even fewer.
