JavaScript developers have been using various frameworks for training and deploying machine learning models in the browser. Diet group drafts bill that aims to promote Japanese language learning at home and abroad
A cross-party group of lawmakers on Tuesday unveiled a draft version of what would become Japan's first-ever law defining the government's responsibility to systematically promote Japanese language education both at home and abroad. The drafting of the bill comes as Japan experiences a continued increase in non-Japanese residents, including under categories such as technical intern trainees, students, and highly skilled professionals, but at the same time lacks a unified policy as to how to teach them Japanese. The group hopes to submit the bill to the fall session of the Diet for possible enactment, Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Hiroshi Hase, secretary-general of the group, told The Japan Times. Whether the bill will be passed through the Diet and how big of an impact it will create remains to be seen, with its effectiveness likely hinging on how much funding it receives from the government. The draft bill does not specify any numerical targets for fiscal spending nor set a deadline for the government to meet the ultimate goal advocated in the legislation.
Noughts and Crosses AI demo for Science Fair events
A hands-on demo for use at a small STEM event โ letting kids train a simple AI system by playing a few games of noughts and crosses. I prepared an activity for a STEM event in London this week. The idea was to make something for a Science Fair sort of event โ where children will be walking past a stand, and might stop for a minute or two to try out an activity. The objective was to come up with a hands-on demo that would enable a volunteer to talk to the children about machine learning. As I've written it, I thought I'd share it here in case anyone else might find it useful for another event.

Chinese schools are testing AI that grades papers almost as well as teachers
Some schools in China have incorporated paper-grading artificial intelligence into their classrooms, according to the South China Morning Post. One in every four schools, or about 60,000 institutions, are quietly testing a machine learning-powered system that can score students' work automatically, and even offer suggestions where appropriate. The AI, which can be accessed through various online portals, and which the report describes as similar to the system used by the Education Testing Service in the U.S., uses an evolving "knowledge base" to interpret the "general logic" and "meaning" of pupils' essays and to highlight stylistic, structural, and thematic areas that need improvement. It can read both English and Chinese, and it's reportedly perceptive enough to notice when paragraphs veer too far off topic. The 10-year-old grading software leverages deep learning algorithms to "compare notes" with human teachers' scores, suggestions, and comments.

A framework is introduced for actively and adaptively solving a sequence of machine learning problems, which are changing in bounded manner from one time step to the next. An algorithm is developed that actively queries the labels of the most informative samples from an unlabeled data pool, and that adapts to the change by utilizing the information acquired in the previous steps. Our analysis shows that the proposed active learning algorithm based on stochastic gradient descent achieves a near-optimal excess risk performance for maximum likelihood estimation. Furthermore, an estimator of the change in the learning problems using the active learning samples is constructed, which provides an adaptive sample size selection rule that guarantees the excess risk is bounded for sufficiently large number of time steps. Experiments with synthetic and real data are presented to validate our algorithm and theoretical results.

A blood-thirsty new video game that encourages players to take part in a school shooting has triggered outrage online. The upcoming game, Active Shooter, lets players choose between taking on the role of a SWAT team member trying to stop an ongoing school shooting -- or the role of the shooter themselves. Those who play as the shooter will be shown a tally of the number of civilians and police officers they have managed to kill during their simulated shooting spree.
