Acoustic Scene Classification: A Competition Review

arXiv.org Machine Learning

In this paper we study the problem of acoustic scene classification, i.e., categorization of audio sequences into mutually exclusive classes based on their spectral content. We describe the methods and results discovered during a competition organized in the context of a graduate machine learning course; both by the students and external participants. We identify the most suitable methods and study the impact of each by performing an ablation study of the mixture of approaches. We also compare the results with a neural network baseline, and show the improvement over that. Finally, we discuss the impact of using a competition as a part of a university course, and justify its importance in the curriculum based on student feedback.

Here are the major obstacles to robot servants that AI scientists are trying to solve

#artificialintelligence

AI systems already display vision, language and controlled motor skills, but researchers are looking to answer the question: 'When will we have robots that can do housework, communicate in natural language conversations and defend themselves against discrimination?' At the global artificial intelligence conference IJCAI-ECAI 2018 held in Stockholm, Sweden, AI experts and research students from top universities around the world came together to discuss the state of AI as it stands today, and where we are headed in the not-so-distant future. "There won't be a Big AI Bang where complete AI systems suddenly surround us in the next year," says Christian Guttmann, Executive Director of the Nordic Artificial Intelligence Institute, "Instead, we will see more and more AI features being included in our products and services." Most researchers are in agreement โ€“ artificial intelligence will not become ubiquitous in a day. "The truth is, that despite tremendous advances in AI technologies, we are still far from having robot maids," according to Joyce Chai, Director of the Language and Interaction Research Group at Michigan State University.

Learning Math for Machine Learning

Vincent Chen is a student at Stanford University studying Computer Science. He is also a Research Assistant at the Stanford AI Lab. It's not entirely clear what level of mathematics is necessary to get started in machine learning, especially for those who didn't study math or statistics in school. In this piece, my goal is to suggest the mathematical background necessary to build products or conduct academic research in machine learning. These suggestions are derived from conversations with machine learning engineers, researchers, and educators, as well as my own experiences in both machine learning research and industry roles.

Artificial intelligence system designs drugs from scratch

#artificialintelligence

An artificial-intelligence approach created at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy can teach itself to design new drug molecules from scratch and has the potential to dramatically accelerate the design of new drug candidates. The system is called Reinforcement Learning for Structural Evolution, known as ReLeaSE, and is an algorithm and computer program that comprises two neural networks which can be thought of as a teacher and a student. The teacher knows the syntax and linguistic rules behind the vocabulary of chemical structures for about 1.7 million known biologically active molecules. By working with the teacher, the student learns over time and becomes better at proposing molecules that are likely to be useful as new medicines. The University has applied for a patent for the technology, and the team published a proof-of-concept study in the journal Science Advances last week.

AI and Automation in HR: Impact, Adoption and Future Workforce

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been changing our lives for decades, but today its presence is bigger than ever before. Sometimes, we don't even realize it when a new AI-powered system, tool, or product appears and outperforms us, humans. The benefits of AI and automation for HR and the workforce don't come instantly, however. It's a journey and one can see the short-term benefits of this journey in automation, the medium-term benefits in augmentation and finally the long-term benefits in the amplification of human activities or tasks. Let's take a look at the various effects of AI and automation on HR and the workforce in more detail.

Podcast: Six Experts Explain the Killer Robots Debate - Future of Life Institute

#artificialintelligence

Why are so many AI researchers so worried about lethal autonomous weapons? What makes autonomous weapons so much worse than any other weapons we have today? And why is it so hard for countries to come to a consensus about autonomous weapons? Not surprisingly, the short answer is: it's complicated. In this month's podcast, Ariel spoke with experts from a variety of perspectives on the current status of LAWS, where we are headed, and the feasibility of banning these weapons. Guests include ex-Pentagon advisor Paul Scharre (3:40), artificial intelligence professor Toby Walsh (40:51), Article 36 founder Richard Moyes (53:30), Campaign to Stop Killer Robots founders Mary Wareham and Bonnie Docherty (1:03:38), and ethicist and co-founder of the International Committee for Robot Arms Control, Peter Asaro (1:32:39).
