Trash talk hurts, even when it comes from a robot: Discouraging words from machines impair human game play

#artificialintelligence

The trash talk in the study was decidedly mild, with utterances such as "I have to say you are a terrible player," and "Over the course of the game your playing has become confused." Even so, people who played a game with the robot -- a commercially available humanoid robot known as Pepper -- performed worse when the robot discouraged them and better when the robot encouraged them. Lead author Aaron M. Roth said some of the 40 study participants were technically sophisticated and fully understood that a machine was the source of their discomfort. "One participant said, 'I don't like what the robot is saying, but that's the way it was programmed so I can't blame it,'" said Roth, who conducted the study while he was a master's student in the CMU Robotics Institute. But the researchers found that, overall, human performance ebbed regardless of technical sophistication.

School of Law Board of Governors' Eileen Lach - Trailblazer, Thought Leader, Giver St. Thomas Newsroom

#artificialintelligence

Throughout her life, Eileen Lach has been a leader. Growing up in northeast Minneapolis, she knew at a young age she wanted to move to New York City and travel the world. Lach accomplished that and more, carving out a position on Wall Street early in her career and later serving as the first general counsel and chief compliance officer for The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). She is considered a thought leader, especially in the area of ethics and artificial intelligence (AI). During a conversation with Lach last summer, it was hard not to be wowed by her achievements and admire her dedication to philanthropic causes.

How AI can help fight cyberbullying

#artificialintelligence

Cyberbullying is just as dangerous and huge a problem as regular bullying. Last year, a 12-year-old girl from Florida committed suicide by hanging herself. As the investigation of her demise found out, the reason for her taking her life was cyberstalking and cyberbullying. Two more 12-year-olds were taken into custody after the incident for spreading rumors about the victim online and for inciting her to commit suicide. While bringing many new possibilities to education, technology and Internet accessibility can become a means to harm another person, as seen in this tragic case--and, unfortunately, many others. Part of the problem is that children this young, both bullies and victims, often do not think their actions through and act hastily.

Technologies of advanced data processing Industry 4.0, including above all Learning machines and Artificial Intelligence is also used in the attempt to build machines equipped with the ability to self-improve the performed tasks and programmed activities. Perhaps in the future there will be an attempt to build artificial awareness in which supercomputers will be equipped. In my opinion, consciousness can only be mathematically modeled in theory. Even if a mathematical model of artificial consciousness were built using ICT and Industry 4.0 and in the future Industry 5.0 and based on this model artificial intelligence would be created in quantum computers installed e.g. in autonomous robots, androids, it will still be only artificial intelligence without emotions and the essence of human consciousness. An analysis of the nature of human thoughts is necessary to distinguish between human intelligence and various artificial intelligence technologies being developed.

How to Start a Career in Artificial Intelligence - ITChronicles

As Frank Newport, senior scientist at Gallup, expressed it: "Whether they know it or not, AI has moved into a big percentage of Americans' lives in one way or another already." Newport made the comment in light of the results of a 2018 Gallup consumer survey. It found almost nine of ten (85%) US adults use at least one service regularly that features some element of artificial intelligence. Almost half (47%) said they used smartphone personal assistants while 32% use ride-sharing apps, such as Uber and Lyft. Twenty-two percent have home personal assistants, such as Alexa and Google Home, and 20% use smart home devices, such as smart lights or smart thermostats.

The Three Types Of AI Companies 7wData

#artificialintelligence

Companies using data science are rapidly eating the market shares of their competitors. This shift can be observed across many industries. The root cause is that advanced analytics offers pronounced decision-making leverage. This effect is stronger in a digitized economy where a correct decision can quickly propagate through networks of businesses and consumers. Resources are rapidly allocated to the best companies.

How to develop soft skills

#artificialintelligence

November 11, 2019As automation and artificial intelligence dramatically change the nature of work, employees must fine tune the social and emotional abilities machines cannot master. To encourage this behavior, employers must adjust the ways they assess, educate, train and reward their workforce on soft skills such as collaboration, communication and critical thinking. Our previous post demonstrated the value of developing and rewarding soft skills, considering the impact of automation and AI on the workplace of the future. But what exactly are soft skills, and how can organizations meet these needs? Soft skills, which are commonly defined as non-technical skills that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with others, are vital to organizations and can impact culture, mindsets, leadership, attitudes and behaviors.

ARii and UMP INK MoU to Expand Technology Expertise Through New Academic Programmes

#artificialintelligence

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii). The MOU outlined collaborations in research, academic and student exchange programmes and dual degree programmes, and would also pave the way for the establishment of smart partnerships in knowledge sharing between the two parties. Today's MoU signing will be a breakthrough for UMP and MARii to introduce a Dual Degree Master of Automotive Engineering Programme at MARii Academy of Technology in Rawang. This Master's degree programme offers courses on topics like electrification of drivetrains, artificial intelligence (AI) processes in automation, battery system for modern drives, BUS Systems and diagnosis protocol and many other areas related to automotive engineering. The students will be taught by experienced professors from HsKA and UMP.
