Darema Lecture Series Begins With Georgia Tech's Judy Hoffman

#artificialintelligence

The Illinois Institute of Technology College of Science is pleased to announce the establishment of the Dr. Frederica Darema Lecture Series in Computer Science. This permanent fund will help advance female and minority early-stage computer science researchers at U.S. academic institutions. The lecture series is designed to encourage women and individuals from under-represented groups to pursue academic careers in computer sciences, and focuses on providing speaking opportunities for tenure track assistant professors (or the equivalent) at U.S. institutions in their fourth to sixth year. Lectureships may also be awarded to exceptional junior researchers in U.S. federal or industrial research laboratories in their third to fifth years of career, following doctoral/postdoctoral studies. Artificial Intelligence researcher Judy Hoffman, assistant professor in the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech, will be the inaugural guest speaker for the Frederica Darema Lecture Series giving a lecture on "How Dataset Bias Leads to Learned Model Failures."

Ways To Utilize Chatbots In Education

#artificialintelligence

Technology has had an impact on all industries, to at least some extent. Some industries, it's hand is felt more strongly than others, of course, but the continued adoption of technology for industry is inevitable and exciting. One industry with a slightly strange relationship to technology is education. Technology isn't as inherently suited to education as it is to, say, medicine, but that doesn't mean that there isn't room for it to have an enormous impact. It just requires some more creativity.

Using Artificial Intelligence to Boost Student Retention Rates

#artificialintelligence

Universities are also using predictive analytics to identify students that might struggle socially or academically during the first year. TIMES reports that Georgia State has analyzed 2.5 million grades of former students to find out what may cause a student to fail in their studies. The university developed an early warning system that triggers alerts when students are struggling, so they can be helped before they fail. Georgia State discovered from their data that how students fare in the first course in their majors can predict whether or not they will graduate. For instance, 85% of political science majors who get an A or B end up earning degrees, but only 25% of those who score a C or lower will graduate.

AI for Good

#artificialintelligence

We want to demystify Artificial Intelligence and open up the public discourse around the positive, ethical uses that can have a positive impact on people's lives. AI has enormous potential to transform the way that systems and services are provided across all areas of society, such as; local and national government, science, health, education, arts, climate action, transport, manufacturing, emergency services, academia and research. Much of the public discourse about AI to date has focused on the benefits for the private sector. We want to change that, raising the profile of AI innovators helping improve social outcomes in communities across Scotland. If AI is to be used as a tool to improve our society, there must be focus on the intended and unintended impact on users, on addressing inequalities and not exacerbating them, on making technology that is open and accessible and to not entrench bias and discrimination within the technologies we create.

Visiting the "Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Vocational Education and Training (VET)" project

#artificialintelligence

At the end of the week I had a chance to give a guest input at the kick-off meeting of the new Erasmus Plus project "Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Vocational Education and Training (VET)". The partners come from Greece, Italy, Lithuania and the United Kingdom/Wales. All partners are known to us from previous European cooperation activities, so the project team was in a good position to have a rapid start. My role as a visitor was to give an overview of some predecessor projects and their recent/ongoing work. In addition I had a surprise input to deliver on top of my presentation.

How the public sector is transforming citizen services with AI

We are now well aware millennials and Generation Z have different expectations to their parents. With globalisation and the democratisation of knowledge, enabled by the internet and mobile devices, the average citizen is consuming services of all kinds in an entirely new way. From renewing your car tax from your phone and having a video chat with your doctor, we now expect to access healthcare, government and educational services in a similarly convenient way, and artificial intelligence (AI) is often the solution to providing it.

The Artificial Intelligence Industry and Global Challenges

#artificialintelligence

Whoever controls the strongest artificial intelligences controls the world. Artificial intelligence is the most important technology of the 21st century. It is therefore important to understand global ambitions and movements. In this article I examine the global artificial intelligence industry and in this context consider the aspects of politics, data, economy, start-ups, financing, research and infrastructure. I will only briefly discuss the current superpowers China and the USA, as I will dedicate a separate article to each of them. The question that we must ask ourselves in the end is how humanity will deal with the global challenges. So far, the first wave of digitization has developed without much government influence. Although there are now plans to break Google's monopoly (USA and Europe), for example by imposing European fines on Google and Facebook, politics is lagging behind the market by over a decade. As far as AI is concerned, for the first time in recent history I have observed a multitude of initiatives, strategies and actions by dozens of governments around the world - with very different goals and approaches. Artificial intelligence is and remains an issue that politicians and administrations of all nations have to deal with. AIs are relevant for climate protection and economic policy.
