Before a rapt, standing-room-only audience of more than 300 students, faculty, and other members of the Law School community, Microsoft President and Chief Legal Officer Brad Smith '84 returned to campus on October 1 to discuss his new book, Tools and Weapons: The Promise and the Peril of the Digital Age (cowritten with Carol Ann Browne). The event with Gillian Lester, Dean and the Lucy G. Moses Professor of Law of Columbia Law School, and Professor Tim Wu, a leading authority on antitrust law who advocates for breaking up Big Tech companies, was the season's first installment of the Dean's Distinguished Speaker Series. "Brad may be the only tech executive who would willingly share the stage with Professor Wu, given Tim's strong and well-articulated position on the perils associated with the bigness of today's technology companies," said Dean Lester in her introduction. The conversation touched on a number of pressing concerns, including cybersecurity, government regulation, ethics, and human rights. Smith's book addresses the untold ramifications of digital technology's ubiquity in our personal lives, our societies, and our economies.

A large public research university figured out how to tap the power of artificial intelligence and human intelligence to produce impressive gains in student success. Over the past ten years, the University of South Florida (USF) has experienced dramatic improvement in student success, as measured by the first-year persistence rate, the four-year graduation rate, and the six-year graduation rate. Each of those metrics has improved substantially. To promote persistence and completion, the university implemented a wide array of programs, practices, and policies based on a campus Student Success Task Force Report released in April 2010. These initiatives included many of the standard student success initiatives in place at many other colleges and universities, including living learning communities, the professionalization of academic advising, gradual increases in admissions requirements, course redesigns, expansion of on-campus housing, and promotion of student engagement.

In this introductory lecture set of lectures I will give a very quick overview of the different kinds of machine learning paradigms and therefore I call this lectures machine learning.

Udemy, the largest online learning source, just published its Udemy for Business 2020 Workplace Learning Trends Report: The Skills of the Future (48 pp., PDF, opt-in). As Forbes noticed, the report claims that it is now key "to prepare workforces for the future of work in an AI-enabled world." The report states that "In the world of finance, investment funds managed by AI and computers account for 35% of America's stock market today," citing a recent article in The Economist, The rise of the financial machines. For their part, in the report, Udemy notes that AI is reshaping the world of work. The organization notes that 65% of the leaders cited that AI and robotics are an important or very important issue in human capital.

Students took part in discussions and creative activities, such as designing robot companions and deploying machine–learning to solve problems.

A new national research institution has been launched by China that will be focusing on providing education to the country's children regarding artificial intelligence from an early age, as well as, introduce more applications of artificial intelligence into the academic arena, as reported by the Beijing News. Artificial Intelligence Education Research Institute of the China Children's is a joint venture of the top schools such as Peking University and China National Children's Center, which is a non-profit organization under the cabinet of the country i.e. the Ministry of Education. The target of the institute is to research the ways by which artificial intelligence will be changing the ways kids are taught, as well as, for sparking an interest in artificial intelligence which would be preparing them well for a future that will be saturated with technology. The ambitious plans of China are to become the superpower of artificial intelligence across the globe, however, it was shown in a research that it still lags behind those nations that are developed in terms of artificial intelligence talent.
