Asif: Tell us about your journey with your multiple startups and successful exits. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced? To date, I've built three venture-backed companies, one bootstrap company and a fifth company I, unfortunately, had to close down. My most recent exit experience was also my most successful. I founded BlazeMeter, back in September of 2011, and we were acquired by CA technologies in October of 2016.


CIOs face uphill climb in finding skilled artificial intelligence talent

New data from Gartner Inc. suggests that the recruiting, management, and retention of artificial intelligence talent (AI) will be a strategic challenge globally for the foreseeable future. For the past four years, Gartner found, the strongest demand for talent with AI skills has come from non-IT departments. Departments recruiting AI talent in high volumes include marketing, sales, customer service, finance, and research and development, Gartner said in a press release. "These business units are using AI talent for customer churn modeling, customer profitability analysis, customer segmentation, cross-sell and upsell recommendations, demand planning, and risk management." Gartner TalentNeuron data released Wednesday shows the total AI jobs posted by non-IT departments in Top 12 countries by GDP, grew 74%, to 156,294 through March 2019, from 89,895 in July 2015.


Pix2Shape -- Towards Unsupervised Learning of 3D Scenes from Images using a View-based Representation

We infer and generate three-dimensional (3D) scene information from a single input image and without supervision. This problem is under-explored, with most prior work relying on supervision from, e.g., 3D ground-truth, multiple images of a scene, image silhouettes or key-points. We propose Pix2Shape, an approach to solve this problem with four components: (i) an encoder that infers the latent 3D representation from an image, (ii) a decoder that generates an explicit 2.5D surfel-based reconstruction of a scene from the latent code (iii) a differentiable renderer that synthesizes a 2D image from the surfel representation, and (iv) a critic network trained to discriminate between images generated by the decoder-renderer and those from a training distribution. Pix2Shape can generate complex 3D scenes that scale with the view-dependent on-screen resolution, unlike representations that capture world-space resolution, i.e., voxels or meshes. We show that Pix2Shape learns a consistent scene representation in its encoded latent space and that the decoder can then be applied to this latent representation in order to synthesize the scene from a novel viewpoint. We evaluate Pix2Shape with experiments on the ShapeNet dataset as well as on a novel benchmark we developed, called 3D-IQTT, to evaluate models based on their ability to enable 3d spatial reasoning. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation demonstrate Pix2Shape's ability to solve scene reconstruction, generation, and understanding tasks.

Recently one morning, I asked my computer a relatively simple question: can artificial intelligence (AI) write? We're not too certain on what artificial intelligence will be able to write, but there are some scenarios in which computers could be responsible for a huge number of word documents โ€ฆ The biggest potential scenarios would involve machines analyzing what has already been written and determining what pieces need to be edited to make the content seem fresh. The above sentences were composed by a machine in a matter of seconds. The tool used is a freely accessible interface based on the GPT-2 text generator released by OpenAI โ€“ a company founded by technology industry leaders, including Elon Musk and Sam Altman. Only a limited version of the tool was made available, as it was dubbed "too dangerous" by the company to release fully into the world.

A Review of IBM's Advanced Machine Learning and Signal Processing Certification

This review has been written with the intention of not only providing you with my opinion of the course but also to provide an insight into the topics covered and teach some of the key concepts. The Advanced Machine Learning and Signal Processing course was developed by IBM and available on Coursera. It is available as an individual course or as one-part of a four-part massive open online course (MOOC), the Advanced Data Science Specialization. The Fundamentals of Scalable Data Science focuses on the basics of Apache Spark in the cloud and acted as an introduction to IBM Watson Studio (IBM's cloud service). In contrast, this course is significantly more in-depth, focusing on more advanced machine learning concepts and signal processing. The course is delivered by two IBM data scientists, Romeo Kienzler and Nickolay Manchev.
