Drones – the New Critical Infrastructure

#artificialintelligence

Be prepared in the near future when you gaze into the blue skies to perceive a whole series of strange-looking things – no, they will not be birds, nor planes, or even superman. They may be temporarily, and in some cases startlingly mistaken as UFOs, given their bizarre and ominous appearance. But, in due course, they will become recognized as valuable objects of a new era of human-made flying machines, intended to serve a broad range of missions and objectives. Many such applications are already incorporated and well entrenched in serving essential functions for extending capabilities in our vital infrastructures such as transportation, utilities, the electric grid, agriculture, emergency services, and many others. Rapidly advancing technologies have made possible the dramatic capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV/drones) to uniquely perform various functions that were inconceivable a mere few years ago.

Why kids need special protection from AI's influence

#artificialintelligence

Why kids need special protection from AI's influence Algorithms can change the course of children's lives. Kids are interacting with Alexas that can record their voice data and influence their speech and social development. They're binging videos on TikTok and YouTube pushed to them by recommendation systems that end up shaping their worldviews. Algorithms are also increasingly used to determine what their education is like, whether they'll receive health care, and even whether their parents are deemed fit to care for them. Sometimes this can have devastating effects: this past summer, for example, thousands of students lost their university admissions after algorithms--used in lieu of pandemic-canceled standardized tests--inaccurately predicted their academic performance.

Intro to the Machine Learning Math

#artificialintelligence

It's way easier than you would think. Much of the content below is based on the Intro to Deep Learning with PyTorch course by Facebook AI. If you want to learn more, take the course, or just take a look here. Below is a graph that determines whether or not a student will be accepted into a university. Two pieces of data have been used: grades and tests each on a scale of 0–10.

Master's degree in artificial intelligence now within reach of low-income students

#artificialintelligence

Researchers from Florida Atlantic University's College of Engineering and Computer Science have received a four-year, $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation for a project to make the master's degree in artificial intelligence (AI) accessible to high-achieving, low-income students. The accelerated five-year bachelor's degree in science and master's degree in AI program is designed to adapt curricular and co-curricular support to enable students to complete their degrees in AI, autonomous systems or machine learning, which are critically important areas needed to advance America's global competitiveness and national security. "Artificial intelligence is transforming every walk of life from business to healthcare and enabling us to rethink how we analyze data, integrate massive amounts of information and make informed decisions that impact society, the economy and governance," said Stella Batalama, Ph.D., dean of FAU's College of Engineering and Computer Science and a co-principal investigator of the grant. "This important grant from the National Science Foundation will allow us to recruit and train talented and diverse students who are economically disadvantaged and provide them with a unique opportunity to pursue graduate education in an exciting and burgeoning field." By preparing increased numbers of high-achieving, low-income students to become engineers in these fields, this project addresses the need for growing a more diverse STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) research population.

In this section, we will introduce the deep learning framework we'll be using through this course, which is PyTorch. We will show you how to install it, how it works and why it's special, and then we will code some PyTorch tensors and show you some operations on tensors, as well as show you Autograd in code!

SEMI: Self-supervised Exploration via Multisensory Incongruity

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Efficient exploration is a long-standing problem in reinforcement learning. In this work, we introduce a self-supervised exploration policy by incentivizing the agent to maximize multisensory incongruity, which can be measured in two aspects: perception incongruity and action incongruity. The former represents the uncertainty in multisensory fusion model, while the latter represents the uncertainty in an agent's policy. Specifically, an alignment predictor is trained to detect whether multiple sensory inputs are aligned, the error of which is used to measure perception incongruity. The policy takes the multisensory observations with sensory-wise dropout as input and outputs actions for exploration. The variance of actions is further used to measure action incongruity. Our formulation allows the agent to learn skills by exploring in a self-supervised manner without any external rewards. Besides, our method enables the agent to learn a compact multimodal representation from hard examples, which further improves the sample efficiency of our policy learning. We demonstrate the efficacy of this formulation across a variety of benchmark environments including object manipulation and audio-visual games.

Fairness in Semi-supervised Learning: Unlabeled Data Help to Reduce Discrimination

arXiv.org Machine Learning

A growing specter in the rise of machine learning is whether the decisions made by machine learning models are fair. While research is already underway to formalize a machine-learning concept of fairness and to design frameworks for building fair models with sacrifice in accuracy, most are geared toward either supervised or unsupervised learning. Yet two observations inspired us to wonder whether semi-supervised learning might be useful to solve discrimination problems. First, previous study showed that increasing the size of the training set may lead to a better trade-off between fairness and accuracy. Second, the most powerful models today require an enormous of data to train which, in practical terms, is likely possible from a combination of labeled and unlabeled data. Hence, in this paper, we present a framework of fair semi-supervised learning in the pre-processing phase, including pseudo labeling to predict labels for unlabeled data, a re-sampling method to obtain multiple fair datasets and lastly, ensemble learning to improve accuracy and decrease discrimination. A theoretical decomposition analysis of bias, variance and noise highlights the different sources of discrimination and the impact they have on fairness in semi-supervised learning. A set of experiments on real-world and synthetic datasets show that our method is able to use unlabeled data to achieve a better trade-off between accuracy and discrimination.

An Intuitive Tutorial to Gaussian Processes Regression

arXiv.org Machine Learning

This introduction aims to provide readers an intuitive understanding of Gaussian processes regression. Gaussian processes regression (GPR) models have been widely used in machine learning applications because their representation flexibility and inherently uncertainty measures over predictions. The paper starts with explaining mathematical basics that Gaussian processes built on including multivariate normal distribution, kernels, non-parametric models, joint and conditional probability. The Gaussian processes regression is then described in an accessible way by balancing showing unnecessary mathematical derivation steps and missing key conclusive results. An illustrative implementation of a standard Gaussian processes regression algorithm is provided. Beyond the standard Gaussian processes regression, existing software packages to implement state-of-the-art Gaussian processes algorithms are reviewed. Lastly, more advanced Gaussian processes regression models are specified. The paper is written in an accessible way, thus undergraduate science and engineering background will find no difficulties in following the content.

Resource-Constrained On-Device Learning by Dynamic Averaging

arXiv.org Machine Learning

The communication between data-generating devices is partially responsible for a growing portion of the world's power consumption. Thus reducing communication is vital, both, from an economical and an ecological perspective. For machine learning, on-device learning avoids sending raw data, which can reduce communication substantially. Furthermore, not centralizing the data protects privacy-sensitive data. However, most learning algorithms require hardware with high computation power and thus high energy consumption. In contrast, ultra-low-power processors, like FPGAs or micro-controllers, allow for energy-efficient learning of local models. Combined with communication-efficient distributed learning strategies, this reduces the overall energy consumption and enables applications that were yet impossible due to limited energy on local devices. The major challenge is then, that the low-power processors typically only have integer processing capabilities. This paper investigates an approach to communication-efficient on-device learning of integer exponential families that can be executed on low-power processors, is privacy-preserving, and effectively minimizes communication. The empirical evaluation shows that the approach can reach a model quality comparable to a centrally learned regular model with an order of magnitude less communication. Comparing the overall energy consumption, this reduces the required energy for solving the machine learning task by a significant amount.
