Learning The TensorFlow Way of Linear Regression

#artificialintelligence

We will loop through batches of data points and let TensorFlow update the slope and y-intercept. Instead of generated data, we will use the iris dataset that is built into the Scikit Learn. Specifically, we will find an optimal line through data points where the x-value is the petal width and the y-value is the sepal length. We choose these two because there appears to be a linear relationship between them, as we will see in the graphs at the end. We will also talk more about the effects of different loss functions in the next section, but for now we will use the L2 loss function.

Improving Students Performance in Small-Scale Online Courses -- A Machine Learning-Based Intervention

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The birth of massive open online courses (MOOCs) has had an undeniable effect on how teaching is being delivered. It seems that traditional in class teaching is becoming less popular with the young generation, the generation that wants to choose when, where and at what pace they are learning. As such, many universities are moving towards taking their courses, at least partially, online. However, online courses, although very appealing to the younger generation of learners, come at a cost. For example, the dropout rate of such courses is higher than that of more traditional ones, and the reduced in person interaction with the teachers results in less timely guidance and intervention from the educators. Machine learning (ML) based approaches have shown phenomenal successes in other domains. The existing stigma that applying ML based techniques requires a large amount of data seems to be a bottleneck when dealing with small scale courses with limited amounts of produced data. In this study, we show not only that the data collected from an online learning management system could be well utilized in order to predict students overall performance but also that it could be used to propose timely intervention strategies to boost the students performance level. The results of this study indicate that effective intervention strategies could be suggested as early as the middle of the course to change the course of students progress for the better. We also present an assistive pedagogical tool based on the outcome of this study, to assist in identifying challenging students and in suggesting early intervention strategies.

Consolidation via Policy Information Regularization in Deep RL for Multi-Agent Games

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This paper introduces an information-theoretic constraint on learned policy complexity in the Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MADDPG) reinforcement learning algorithm. Previous research with a related approach in continuous control experiments suggests that this method favors learning policies that are more robust to changing environment dynamics. The multi-agent game setting naturally requires this type of robustness, as other agents' policies change throughout learning, introducing a nonstationary environment. For this reason, recent methods in continual learning are compared to our approach, termed Capacity-Limited MADDPG. Results from experimentation in multi-agent cooperative and competitive tasks demonstrate that the capacity-limited approach is a good candidate for improving learning performance in these environments.

Shuffling Gradient-Based Methods with Momentum

arXiv.org Machine Learning

We combine two advanced ideas widely used in optimization for machine learning: shuffling strategy and momentum technique to develop a novel shuffling gradient-based method with momentum to approximate a stationary point of non-convex finite-sum minimization problems. While our method is inspired by momentum techniques, its update is significantly different from existing momentum-based methods. We establish that our algorithm achieves a state-of-the-art convergence rate for both constant and diminishing learning rates under standard assumptions (i.e., $L$-smoothness and bounded variance). When the shuffling strategy is fixed, we develop another new algorithm that is similar to existing momentum methods. This algorithm covers the single-shuffling and incremental gradient schemes as special cases. We prove the same convergence rate of this algorithm under the $L$-smoothness and bounded gradient assumptions. We demonstrate our algorithms via numerical simulations on standard datasets and compare them with existing shuffling methods. Our tests have shown encouraging performance of the new algorithms.

Generative Adversarial Simulator

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Knowledge distillation between machine learning models has opened many new avenues for parameter count reduction, performance improvements, or amortizing training time when changing architectures between the teacher and student network. In the case of reinforcement learning, this technique has also been applied to distill teacher policies to students. Until now, policy distillation required access to a simulator or real world trajectories. In this paper we introduce a simulator-free approach to knowledge distillation in the context of reinforcement learning. A key challenge is having the student learn the multiplicity of cases that correspond to a given action. While prior work has shown that data-free knowledge distillation is possible with supervised learning models by generating synthetic examples, these approaches to are vulnerable to only producing a single prototype example for each class. We propose an extension to explicitly handle multiple observations per output class that seeks to find as many exemplars as possible for a given output class by reinitializing our data generator and making use of an adversarial loss. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of simulator-free knowledge distillation between a teacher and a student policy. This new approach improves over the state of the art on data-free learning of student networks on benchmark datasets (MNIST, Fashion-MNIST, CIFAR-10), and we also demonstrate that it specifically tackles issues with multiple input modes. We also identify open problems when distilling agents trained in high dimensional environments such as Pong, Breakout, or Seaquest.

By Debjani Ghosh According to the August 2020 National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom)- McKinsey report, 'Unlocking Value From Data and AI: The India Opportunity', artificial intelligence (AI) deployments, if done right, could add about ₹500 billion to India's GDP in the next five years. Nearly 45% of this value is expected to be driven by the consumer and retail, agriculture, and banking and insurance sectors. Execution will be the key imperative for success. What is needed is an India AI playbook that can help GoI not just build deployment plans but also figure out how to scale them for maximum impact. Such a playbook requires strategy, data, talent, technology, policy framework, execution and the right culture to come together. India unveiled its AI strategy in 2018.
