The tenured engineers of 2021

The School of Engineering has announced that MIT has granted tenure to eight members of its faculty in the departments of Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Nuclear Science and Engineering. "This year's newly tenured faculty are truly inspiring," says Anantha Chandrakasan, dean of the School of Engineering and Vannevar Bush Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. "Their work as educators and scholars has shown an incredible commitment to teaching and research -- they have each had a tremendous impact in their fields and within School of Engineering community." This year's newly tenured associate professors are: Mohammad Alizadeh, in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, focuses his research in the areas of computer networks and systems. His research aims to improve the performance, robustness, and ease of management of future networks and cloud computing systems.

Does the rise of AI spell the end of education?

In Plato's Phaedrus, Socrates tells a story about the Egyptian god Thoth, whose inventions include writing. Socrates relates how Theban king Thamus warned the god that his discovery would "create forgetfulness in the learners' souls". "They will be hearers of many things and will have learned nothing," Socrates recounts, in a translation by Oxford scholar Benjamin Jowett. "They will appear to be omniscient and will generally know nothing; they will be tiresome company, having the show of wisdom without the reality." The passage could be taken as evidence of Phillip Dawson's assertion that "panics" about new technologies and their impacts on learning date back two-and-a-half millennia. Sometimes there is good reason for concern, according to Dawson, associate director of the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning at Deakin University.

Here we go again, sixteen racers clash to fight for three places in the championships during the AWS re:Invent conference in Las Vegas. This month it was even more competitive than in May. The difference between the first and sixteenth racer was less than 5 seconds this month. The track encouraged some fast racing but then fast bots in the main race were quite a bit of a nuisance and could easily block the car from going faster. Udacity and AWS invite you to participate in the scholarship program where you can be given access to a Machine Learning NanoDegree teaching various aspects of working with machine learning and deploying it in production. Registrations have been extended till 12th of July. All you need to do is create a new community race in the AWS DeepRacer Console and select "LIVE race" as the format. Just note that the race is available for four hours only and shuts down after that time.


Machine Learning Pipelines with Azure ML Studio

In this project-based course, you are going to build an end-to-end machine learning pipeline in Azure ML Studio, all without writing a single line of code! This course uses the Adult Income Census data set to train a model to predict an individual's income. It predicts whether an individual's annual income is greater than or less than $50,000. The estimator used in this project is a Two-Class Boosted Decision Tree classifier. Some of the features used to train the model are age, education, occupation, etc.


Technology can level the playing field for disabled people in the workforce

Online education also helps equalize disabled students with the rest of the class, as certain disabilities are not visible when communicating online, and the curriculum can be tailored to meet disability requirements. Advances in edtech are also making communicating with peers smoother, allowing disabled students to debate and discuss better. Braille-enabled accessories, hearing aid-compatible headsets, sign language translating software and text-to-speech tools are a few examples of how edtech can help in this regard. With edtech making it possible for disabled students to learn from home, it also prepares students for the future of work, which is going to be more hybrid.
