Favoring Eagerness for Remaining Items: Designing Efficient, Fair, and Strategyproof Mechanisms

In the assignment problem, the goal is to assign indivisible items to agents who have ordinal preferences, efficiently and fairly, in a strategyproof manner. In practice, first-choice maximality, i.e., assigning a maximal number of agents their top items, is often identified as an important efficiency criterion and measure of agents' satisfaction. In this paper, we propose a natural and intuitive efficiency property, favoring-eagerness-for-remaining-items (FERI), which requires that each item is allocated to an agent who ranks it highest among remaining items, thereby implying first-choice maximality. Using FERI as a heuristic, we design mechanisms that satisfy ex-post or ex-ante variants of FERI together with combinations of other desirable properties of efficiency (Pareto-efficiency), fairness (strong equal treatment of equals and sd-weak-envy-freeness), and strategyproofness (sd-weak-strategyproofness). We also explore the limits of FERI mechanisms in providing stronger efficiency, fairness, or strategyproofness guarantees through impossibility results.

School children are using free online artificial intelligence (AI) software to write essays and poetry for them, as well as university applications and even art projects, a teacher told Parliament. Lord Hampton, who is a working teacher in a north London state school, said an A-level product design student of his even generated degree-level designs in minutes using AI. He warned peers in the House of Lords that conversations around AI dominated by issues of plagiarism and intellectual property miss the fact that the curriculum needs to catch up with a changing world. The independent crossbench peer said: "There is a lot of anecdotal evidence, at the moment, that suggests that students are using AI for everything from essays and poetry to university applications and, rather more surprisingly, in the visual arts subjects. Just before Christmas, one of my product design A-level students came up to me and showed me some designs he'd done. "He'd taken a cardboard model, photographed it, put it into a free piece of software, put in three different parameters and had received, within minutes, 20 high-resolution designs, all original, that were degree level - they weren't A-level, they were degree level.
Stanford faculty weigh in on ChatGPT's shake-up in education
Faculty from the Stanford Accelerator for Learning are already thinking about the ways in which ChatGPT and other generative artificial intelligence will change and contribute to education in particular. Victor Lee, associate professor of education and the faculty lead for the accelerator initiative on generative AI in education, stresses the importance of educators in harnessing this technology. "If we want generative AI to meaningfully improve education," he says, "there is the obvious step we need to take of listening to the existing expertise in education -- from educators, parents, students, and scholars who have spent years studying education -- and using what we learn to find the most pertinent and valuable use cases for generative AI in a very complicated educational system." Over the next several weeks, the Stanford Accelerator for Learning will launch listening sessions and gatherings with educators to strategize a path for generative AI. Says Lee, "We need the use of this technology to be ethical, equitable, and accountable."

AI in education: ChatGPT is just the beginning
Large language models like ChatGPT can generate coherent, believable text. How does this impact education and teaching? Strictly speaking, ChatGPT โ artificial intelligence that generates texts in response to input prompts โ is not even the beginning, but merely an intermediate stage in natural language processing (NLP), which has been observed for about ten years. ChatGPT also can't do anything fundamentally new that earlier tools couldn't. It differs only in the quality of the generated output, the focus on interactivity (input of questions and AI-generated answers) and, above all, in its captivating simplicity: a URL, a registration, a single simple empty text field and the infinity of text generation is open to you, which moreover (depending on the question, mostly) provides meaningful and well-founded results, since it accesses a corpus of about 1 trillion words (from 6 million Wikipedia articles and millions of books and websites). It should be noted that the training dataset consists almost exclusively of English-language texts, but AI-assisted translation also comes into play when communicating with users.
