Boosting Cross-Domain Speech Recognition with Self-Supervision

The cross-domain performance of automatic speech recognition (ASR) could be severely hampered due to the mismatch between training and testing distributions. Since the target domain usually lacks labeled data, and domain shifts exist at acoustic and linguistic levels, it is challenging to perform unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) for ASR. Previous work has shown that self-supervised learning (SSL) or pseudo-labeling (PL) is effective in UDA by exploiting the self-supervisions of unlabeled data. However, these self-supervisions also face performance degradation in mismatched domain distributions, which previous work fails to address. This work presents a systematic UDA framework to fully utilize the unlabeled data with self-supervision in the pre-training and fine-tuning paradigm. On the one hand, we apply continued pre-training and data replay techniques to mitigate the domain mismatch of the SSL pre-trained model. On the other hand, we propose a domain-adaptive fine-tuning approach based on the PL technique with three unique modifications: Firstly, we design a dual-branch PL method to decrease the sensitivity to the erroneous pseudo-labels; Secondly, we devise an uncertainty-aware confidence filtering strategy to improve pseudo-label correctness; Thirdly, we introduce a two-step PL approach to incorporate target domain linguistic knowledge, thus generating more accurate target domain pseudo-labels. Experimental results on various cross-domain scenarios demonstrate that the proposed approach effectively boosts the cross-domain performance and significantly outperforms previous approaches.

Using Implicit Behavior Cloning and Dynamic Movement Primitive to Facilitate Reinforcement Learning for Robot Motion Planning

Reinforcement learning (RL) for motion planning of multi-degree-of-freedom robots still suffers from low efficiency in terms of slow training speed and poor generalizability. In this paper, we propose a novel RL-based robot motion planning framework that uses implicit behavior cloning (IBC) and dynamic movement primitive (DMP) to improve the training speed and generalizability of an off-policy RL agent. IBC utilizes human demonstration data to leverage the training speed of RL, and DMP serves as a heuristic model that transfers motion planning into a simpler planning space. To support this, we also create a human demonstration dataset using a pick-and-place experiment that can be used for similar studies. Comparison studies in simulation reveal the advantage of the proposed method over the conventional RL agents with faster training speed and higher scores. A real-robot experiment indicates the applicability of the proposed method to a simple assembly task. Our work provides a novel perspective on using motion primitives and human demonstration to leverage the performance of RL for robot applications.


Automatic Extraction of the Romanian Academic Word List: Data and Methods

This paper presents the methodology and data used for the automatic extraction of the Romanian Academic Word List (Ro-AWL). Academic Word Lists are useful in both L2 and L1 teaching contexts. For the Romanian language, no such resource exists so far. Ro-AWL has been generated by combining methods from corpus and computational linguistics with L2 academic writing approaches. We use two types of data: (a) existing data, such as the Romanian Frequency List based on the ROMBAC corpus, and (b) self-compiled data, such as the expert academic writing corpus EXPRES. For constructing the academic word list, we follow the methodology for building the Academic Vocabulary List for the English language. The distribution of Ro-AWL features (general distribution, POS distribution) into four disciplinary datasets is in line with previous research. Ro-AWL is freely available and can be used for teaching, research and NLP applications.


RoCar: A Relationship Network-based Evaluation Method to Large Language Models

Pre-trained Models have become the dominant approach in the field of deep learning since Transformer [1]. Buy now, the Large Language Models (LLMs) represented by ChatGPT [2] have received the widest attention from researchers in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially Natural Language Processing (NLP). Like LLaMA [3], many open-source LLMs [4, 5, 6, 3, 7, 8] have been published. Due to the strong reasoning, generative and memory abilities acquired by LLMs during training, they are able to operate a variety of traditional tasks based on specific prompts and achieve great performance. As a result, LLMs have gained widespread interest and applications, such as in the financial [9], emotional [10, 11], legal [12], medical [13, 14, 15] and educational [16] fields. To evaluate the capability of LLMs and to guide the selection of more appropriate LLMs in applications, many evaluation approaches [17] for LLMs have been proposed by researchers. C-Eval [18] constructed a reasoning test set of 13,948 questions in 52 subjects ranging from junior school to postgraduate university and vocational exams to evaluate LLM's problem-solving skills. Gaokao-Bench [19] collected questions from the 2010-2022 Chinese national college entrance examination papers, including 1,781 objective questions and 1,030 subjective questions, and constructed a framework for assessing the language comprehension and logical reasoning ability of LLMs. Microsoft has released a new benchmark test, AGIEval [20], by selecting 20 official, public, high-standard exams, including general university entrance exams (Chinese national college entrance examination and the U.S. SAT), law school entrance exams, maths competitions, bar exams, national civil service exams, and more.


UPFL: Unsupervised Personalized Federated Learning towards New Clients

Personalized federated learning has gained significant attention as a promising approach to address the challenge of data heterogeneity. In this paper, we address a relatively unexplored problem in federated learning. When a federated model has been trained and deployed, and an unlabeled new client joins, providing a personalized model for the new client becomes a highly challenging task. To address this challenge, we extend the adaptive risk minimization technique into the unsupervised personalized federated learning setting and propose our method, FedTTA. We further improve FedTTA with two simple yet effective optimization strategies: enhancing the training of the adaptation model with proxy regularization and early-stopping the adaptation through entropy. Moreover, we propose a knowledge distillation loss specifically designed for FedTTA to address the device heterogeneity. Extensive experiments on five datasets against eleven baselines demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed FedTTA and its variants. Graph Neural Networks For Mapping Variables Between Programs -- Extended Version

Automated program analysis is a pivotal research domain in many areas of Computer Science -- Formal Methods and Artificial Intelligence, in particular. Due to the undecidability of the problem of program equivalence, comparing two programs is highly challenging. Typically, in order to compare two programs, a relation between both programs' sets of variables is required. Thus, mapping variables between two programs is useful for a panoply of tasks such as program equivalence, program analysis, program repair, and clone detection. In this work, we propose using graph neural networks (GNNs) to map the set of variables between two programs based on both programs' abstract syntax trees (ASTs). To demonstrate the strength of variable mappings, we present three use-cases of these mappings on the task of program repair to fix well-studied and recurrent bugs among novice programmers in introductory programming assignments (IPAs). Experimental results on a dataset of 4166 pairs of incorrect/correct programs show that our approach correctly maps 83% of the evaluation dataset. Moreover, our experiments show that the current state-of-the-art on program repair, greatly dependent on the programs' structure, can only repair about 72% of the incorrect programs. In contrast, our approach, which is solely based on variable mappings, can repair around 88.5%.


ChatGPT is Good but Bing Chat is Better for Vietnamese Students

This study examines the efficacy of two SOTA large language models (LLMs), namely ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing Chat (BingChat), in catering to the needs of Vietnamese students. Although ChatGPT exhibits proficiency in multiple disciplines, Bing Chat emerges as the more advantageous option. We conduct a comparative analysis of their academic achievements in various disciplines, encompassing mathematics, literature, English language, physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, and civic education. The results of our study suggest that BingChat demonstrates superior performance compared to ChatGPT across a wide range of subjects, with the exception of literature, where ChatGPT exhibits better performance. Additionally, BingChat utilizes the more advanced GPT-4 technology in contrast to ChatGPT, which is built upon GPT-3.5. This allows BingChat to improve to comprehension, reasoning and generation of creative and informative text. Moreover, the fact that BingChat is accessible in Vietnam and its integration of hyperlinks and citations within responses serve to reinforce its superiority. In our analysis, it is evident that while ChatGPT exhibits praiseworthy qualities, BingChat presents a more apdated solutions for Vietnamese students.


Measuring Lexical Diversity in Texts: The Twofold Length Problem

The impact of text length on the estimation of lexical diversity has captured the attention of the scientific community for more than a century. Numerous indices have been proposed, and many studies have been conducted to evaluate them, but the problem remains. This methodological review provides a critical analysis not only of the most commonly used indices in language learning studies, but also of the length problem itself, as well as of the methodology for evaluating the proposed solutions. The analysis of three datasets of English language-learners' texts revealed that indices that reduce all texts to the same length using a probabilistic or an algorithmic approach solve the length dependency problem; however, all these indices failed to address the second problem, which is their sensitivity to the parameter that determines the length to which the texts are reduced. The paper concludes with recommendations for optimizing lexical diversity analysis.


Testing the Depth of ChatGPT's Comprehension via Cross-Modal Tasks Based on ASCII-Art: GPT3.5's Abilities in Regard to Recognizing and Generating ASCII-Art Are Not Totally Lacking

Over the eight months since its release, ChatGPT and its underlying model, GPT3.5, have garnered massive attention, due to their potent mix of capability and accessibility. While a niche-industry of papers have emerged examining the scope of capabilities these models possess, the information fed to and extracted from these networks has been either natural language text or stylized, code-like language. Drawing inspiration from the prowess we expect a truly human-level intelligent agent to have across multiple signal modalities, in this work we examine GPT3.5's aptitude for visual tasks, where the inputs feature content provided as ASCII-art without overt distillation into a lingual summary. We conduct experiments analyzing the model's performance on image recognition tasks after various transforms typical in visual settings, trials investigating knowledge of image parts, and tasks covering image generation.
