NVIDIA- and Uber-backed Nuro is testing autonomous vehicles in Tokyo
The city's narrow streets and brutal traffic will present a'pressure test' for the tech, its CEO said. US self-driving startup Nuro, which is backed by the likes of NVIDIA, Toyota and Uber, has started testing its autonomous vehicles on Tokyo's challenging streets, reported. The company, which plans to launch a robotaxi service with Uber and Lucid in San Francisco this year, will be testing a handful of vehicles in the city. Human safety drivers will be at the wheel, as is required by Japanese law. Tokyo presents a challenge for autonomous vehicles, given its narrow, crowded streets and left side of the road driving.
An odd-nosed crocodile ate our prehistoric ancestors
'Lucy' probably needed to watch her back. Researchers led by the University of Iowa have described and named a new crocodile species that roamed a region in Africa more than 3 million years ago. The species is named Lucy's hunter, because it overlapped with the famed Lucy and her hominin kin and would have hunted them. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Humans have contended with crocodiles for a long time.

Magnetars are a type of neutron star, an incredibly dense object mainly made up of tightly packed neutron, which forms from the collapsed core of a massive star during a supernova. What sets magnetars apart from other neutron stars is that they also have the most powerful known magnetic fields in the universe.

Dario Amodei's Oppenheimer Moment
It came earlier than expected. More than a year before his recent standoff with the Pentagon, Dario Amodei, the chief executive of Anthropic, published a 15,000-word manifesto describing a glorious AI future. Its title, "Machines of Loving Grace," is borrowed from a Richard Brautigan poem, but as Amodei acknowledged, with some embarrassment, its utopian vision bears some resemblance to science fiction. According to Amodei, we will soon create the first polymath AIs with abilities that surpass those of Nobel Prize winners in "most relevant fields," and we'll have millions of them, a "country of geniuses," all packed into the glowing server racks of a data center, working together. With access to tools that operate directly on our physical world, these AIs would be able to get up to a great deal of dangerous mischief, but according to Amodei, if they're developed--or "grown," as staffers at Anthropic are fond of saying--in the correct way, they will decide to greatly improve our lives. Amodei does not explain precisely how the AIs will accomplish this.
For the first time, astronomers witnessed the birth of a 'magnetar'
Science Space Deep Space Black Holes For the first time, astronomers witnessed the birth of a'magnetar' These fast spinning, magnetic neutron stars may power some of the brightest supernovae in the cosmos. Artist's conception of a magnetar surrounded by an accretion disk that is wobbling, or precessing, because of the effects of general relativity. Some models of magnetars suggest that high-speed jets of charged particles emanate from the magnetar along its rotation axis. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. In December 2024, astronomers watched a star around 25 times the mass of our sun die in a blaze of glory.
