Static electricity will help tiny flying robots perch anywhere
Flying can be exhausting when you're a tiny, bee-sized robot, but researchers from Harvard have created a new way to let little winged bots take a break. Using static electricity, robots no bigger than a quarter can latch onto the underside of any flat surfaces, a process that uses between 500 and 1,000 times less power than flying. In a study published in this week's issue of Science, researchers say this new perching ability could be key to creating insect-sized aerial robots that can help with a long-term observational tasks -- traffic control, to search-and-rescue. The mechanism was developed by researchers from Harvard for the RoboBee: a tiny flying robot first unveiled by a team from the university in 2013. The RoboBee weighs just 0.08 grams (that's 31 times lighter than a penny), and has a pair of tiny wings that can beat up to 120 times per second.

CS Seminar: Using data to predict students at-risk of failure - Seattle
Over half a million students fail to graduate from high school every year. In higher education, similar issues of retention arise, especially for STEM students. Experienced educators can pinpoint students at risk of failure, but the solution doesn't scale well, cannot be used to rank students with the highest risk, and is open to personal biases. Dr. Everaldo Aguiar's PhD research looked out how to use machine learning, based on large amounts of historical data collected by schools, to see if at risk students could be identified. In the recent Computer Science Seminar held May 19 at Northeastern UniversityโSeattle, Dr. Aguiar presented the development, deployment and evaluation of machine learning models that detect, ahead of time, students at risk of underachieving their academic goals.

Salesforce Focusing On AI
According to MarketandMarkets, the artificial intelligence (AI) market is estimated to grow from 419.7 million in 2014 to 5.05 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 53.65% from 2015 to 2020. The Media and Advertising sector is expected to drive the growth of AI during this period. IBM, Microsoft, and Google are key players in the market, and now Salesforce is trying to make inroads into it. For the first quarter of fiscal 2017, Salesforce's revenue grew 27% over the year to 1.92 billion, above analyst estimate of 1.89 billion. Net income was 38.8 billion or 0.06 per share. Non GAAP EPS was 0.24, beating analyst forecast of 0.25.
Can An Algorithm Diagnose Better Than A Doctor? - The Medical Futurist
Many times after my talks, people ask me whether algorithms could theoretically be better at making a diagnosis than doctors. With my doctor's cap on, I must defend the art of medicine. But as a medical futurist I need to tell my honest views. Making a diagnosis is an art. We humans are not engineering products, and therefore measuring a few parameters and tweaking a few knobs will not diagnose and cure our diseases.
Parents Are Worried About Teens Gaming, But Should They Be?
Whether online gaming is bad for teens -- as many believe -- or actually maybe not so bad -- as others believe -- the one "take-it-to-the-bank" is that gaming has become a huge part of the entertainment industry and is not likely to go away anytime soon. And yes, some parents are concerned. A recent Common Sense study found that tech use is a primary cause of conflict between them and their gaming teenagers. Of the 1,200 study participants (both parents and teens), 59 percent of the parents believe that their teenagers were "addicted to their mobile devices." One-third of parents say they argue with their kids on a daily basis about device use, the study said.
