Automatic Identification of Replicated Criminal Websites Using Combined Clustering Methods
The following publication was presented at the 2014 IEEE International Workshop on Cyber Crime and received the Best Paper Award on 5/18/2014. The original IEEE LaTeX formatted PDF publication can also be downloaded from here: IWCC Combined Clustering. To be successful, cybercriminals must figure out how to scale their scams. They duplicate content on new websites, often staying one step ahead of defenders that shut down past schemes. For some scams, such as phishing and counterfeitgoods shops, the duplicated content remains nearly identical. In others, such as advanced-fee fraud and online Ponzi schemes, the criminal must alter content so that it appears different in order to evade detection by victims and law enforcement. Nevertheless, similarities often remain, in terms of the website structure or content, since making truly unique copies does not scale well. In this paper, we present a novel combined clustering method that links together replicated scam websites, even when the criminal has taken steps to hide connections. We evaluate its performance against two collected datasets of scam websites: fake-escrow services and high-yield investment programs (HYIPs). We find that our method more accurately groups similar websites together than does existing general-purpose consensus clustering methods.

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display

Scalable machine learning with InsightEdge: mobile advertisement clicks prediction โ InsightEdge
This blog post will provide an introduction into using machine learning algorithms with InsightEdge. We will go through an exercise to predict mobile advertisement click-through rate with Avazu's dataset. There are several compensation models in online advertising industry, probably the most notable is CPC (Cost Per Click), in which an advertiser pays a publisher when the ad is clicked. Search engine advertising is one of the most popular forms of CPC. It allows advertisers to bid for ad placement in a search engine's sponsored links when someone searches on a keyword that is related to their business offering.
Where is that metadata coming from?
A number of people talk about metadata. Some actually practice what they preach. When it comes to resources needed to apply/associate/embed metadata to digital assets (audio, video, text, graphics, photos) in a consistent manner, too many fall short. We consistently hear about issues with budgets and headcount, while what is really lacking is a clear business case with a total cost of ownership per year. This must include continual executive support (year over year) to operate a successful and sustainable Digital Asset Management (DAM) solution with the necessary people, processes, technology and information (metadata).
When Products Talk - The New Yorker
Last month, the Washington Post reported on a surprising new job in Silicon Valley: bot-writer. "Increasingly, there are poets, comedians, fiction writers, and other artistic types charged with engineering the personalities for a fast-growing crop of artificial intelligence tools," the Post's Elizabeth Dwoskin wrote. These personalities, Dwoskin reported, will soon be joined by more specialized bots developed by other companies, among them Sophie and Molly, "nurse avatars" that talk to patients about their medical conditions. There's even a "guru avatar" in development, designed to teach meditation. These products are exciting and futuristic--just a decade ago, the possibility of conversing with a computer program seemed like science fiction.
Dato Named Gartner Cool Vendor
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dato, creator of the popular machine learning platform GraphLab Create, announced today that it was named a Gartner Cool Vendor in Data Science. Dato was one of five global firms named in the report. The Gartner "Cool Vendors in Data Science" report identifies innovative machine learning vendors that can help analytics leaders solve hard problems, automate and scale advanced analytics. Cool Vendors in Data Science are among emerging machine learning companies that solve targeted industry problems or make the analysis scalable for big data. "Gartner's recognition of how we bring machine learning to more customers in more applications is a big validation of our approach to enabling AI for all developers," said Eduardo Rosini, Dato SVP of Business Development.
Sony Corporation of America: Artificial Intelligence Company Cogitai Announces Sony Strategic Investment
Cogitai, a new company aimed at developing and commercializing core artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, today announced a strategic investment from Sony Corporation. Cogitai is focused on addressing one of the biggest problems confronting AI: namely, that no existing AI system has an understanding of the world comparable to a human's. Even small children in the first few years of life develop an understanding of the world far richer and more sophisticated than the most elaborate AI systems on earth. To address this problem, Cogitai is committed to developing systems that learn continually from their experience. "Our continual-learning technology will allow computer systems to build knowledge and skills simply through interacting with the world around them," said Dr. Mark Ring, CEO of Cogitai.
Analyzing Employee Turnover - Predictive Methods
At first glance, 'intent to leave' seems like it should be pretty good predictor of turnover. If a coworker told me that they were going to quit, I feel like I'd have a pretty good sense of how likely they were to leave. However, many researchers have developed constructs to measure this intention and the results are surprising. For example, there was a meta-analytic study (i.e., study of studies) in 2000 by Rodger Griffeth and Peter Hom on turnover that found the construct'intent to leave' had a shared variance with actually leaving of 12% across all studies (explains roughly 12% of why people leave). That's pretty good for a study on human behavior, but it does leave a reader wondering what is going on.
