Anomaly detection in video with Bayesian nonparametrics

A novel dynamic Bayesian nonparametric topic model for anomaly detection in video is proposed in this paper. Batch and online Gibbs samplers are developed for inference. The paper introduces a new abnormality measure for decision making. The proposed method is evaluated on both synthetic and real data. The comparison with a non-dynamic model shows the superiority of the proposed dynamic one in terms of the classification performance for anomaly detection.
A Variational Approximations-DIC Rubric for Parameter Estimation and Mixture Model Selection Within a Family Setting

Mixture model-based clustering has become an increasingly popular data analysis technique since its introduction fifty years ago, and is now commonly utilized within the family setting. Families of mixture models arise when the component parameters, usually the component covariance matrices, are decomposed and a number of constraints are imposed. Within the family setting, we need to choose the member of the family, i.e., the appropriate covariance structure, in addition to the number of mixture components. To date, the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) has proved most effective for model selection, and the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is usually used for parameter estimation. To date, this EM-BIC rubric has monopolized the literature on families of mixture models. We deviate from this rubric, using variational Bayes approximations for parameter estimation and the deviance information criterion for model selection. The variational Bayes approach alleviates some of the computational complexities associated with the EM algorithm by constructing a tight lower bound on the complex marginal likelihood and maximizing this lower bound by minimizing the associated Kullback-Leibler divergence. We use this approach on the most famous family of Gaussian mixture models within the literature and real and simulated data are used to compare our approach to the EM-BIC rubric.
Google's AI gurus ran tests to try and understand how the human brain works on a subway
Neuroscientists at DeepMind, a Google-owned AI lab in London, have teamed up with academics at Oxford University and UCL to try and determine how the human brain navigates an underground train network. The group -- whose work was published in the journal Neuron this week -- asked humans to plan a journey in a virtual subway network. Participants were tasked with getting from A to B while MRI scans of their brain were taken. These scans showed which parts of the brain are involved in planning and making decisions. The group, which included Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, concluded that the brain splits the task of completing a journey into different jobs, with different parts of the brain handling different elements of the task.
Survey: Older drivers want car tech to stay behind wheel
The number of older drivers in the USA is rising rapidly. In the quest to be able to keep driving as they grow older, more Boomers are anxious to try the latest in car safety tech that might help keep them stay behind the wheel, a new study finds. Some 76% drivers age 50 say they would look for a car with the latest safety features, finds the online survey by insurer The Hartford. "Our findings indicate that some drivers, age 50-plus, would be more willing to drive in certain situations if they had particular technologies," said Jodi Olshevsky, a gerontologist who is executive director of The Hartford Center for Mature Marketing Excellence. He says it suggests "they associate advanced technologies with enhanced safety," They are looking for advanced safety features like blind-spot warning, crash mitigation, lane departure warnings and advanced headlights.

"We chose a Midwestern accent because we talked to a lot of speech therapists and they said this is the most commonly understood accent that people should learn," Elsa founder Vu Van told VentureBeat. Using machine learning, Van plans to extend Elsa to other accents. The same app that Van used to reduce her native Vietnamese accent could help an American moving to Vietnam learn a local Vietnamese accent.
The Dependent Random Measures with Independent Increments in Mixture Models

When observations are organized into groups where commonalties exist amongst them, the dependent random measures can be an ideal choice for modeling. One of the propositions of the dependent random measures is that the atoms of the posterior distribution are shared amongst groups, and hence groups can borrow information from each other. When normalized dependent random measures prior with independent increments are applied, we can derive appropriate exchangeable probability partition function (EPPF), and subsequently also deduce its inference algorithm given any mixture model likelihood. We provide all necessary derivation and solution to this framework. For demonstration, we used mixture of Gaussians likelihood in combination with a dependent structure constructed by linear combinations of CRMs. Our experiments show superior performance when using this framework, where the inferred values including the mixing weights and the number of clusters both respond appropriately to the number of completely random measure used.
