"Most detailed" map of the brain unveiled
A stunning new map of the brain could revolutionise our understand of how it works. Researchers say the new models have already uncovered 100 previously unknown regions of the brain. They say it could revolutionise out understanding of our own mind, and also lead to radical new types of brain surgery. The researchers discovered that our brain's cortex, or outer mantle, is composed of 180 distinct areas per hemisphere. For example, the image above shows areas connected to the three main senses – hearing (red), touch (green) vision (blue) and opposing cognitive systems (light and dark).
Gigaom Rob High talks Artificial Intelligence with Gigaom
Rob High is an IBM Fellow, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, IBM Watson. He has overall responsibility to drive Watson technical strategy and thought leadership. As a key member of the Watson Leadership team, Rob works collaboratively with the Watson engineering, research, and development teams across IBM. Rob High will be speaking on the subject of artificial intelligence at Gigaom Change Leaders Summit in Austin, September 21-23rd. In anticipation of that, I caught up with him to ask a few questions about AI and it's potential impact on the business world.
The Smart Recruits Cash Prize worth Rs 100k ( 1500)
The Smart Recruits is a data science & machine learning competition. This competition will test your programming, analytics and business understanding skills. Machine Learning is being extensively used these days in building predictive models. Availability of wide range of algorithms have empowered data scientists to discover innovative solutions to a problem. This time the problem set gets tougher and better.
Twitter cracks down on trolling after racist and sexist campaign against Ghostbuster actor Leslie Jones
Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display
Facebook Wants To Use Laser To Deliver High-Speed Internet
Facebook unveiled a new laser-based concept for high-speed internet that will bypass the need for dedicated wavelength spectra and government licenses that come with them. Published Tuesday in the journal Optica, the technique was developed by researchers at Facebook's Connectivity Lab. The team is exploring a variety of technologies, including high-altitude long-endurance planes, satellites and lasers." It calls its new concept, which also uses drone technology, free-space optical communication. Explaining their rationale behind turning to laser for data transmission, the researchers say in the paper: "While optical communications have become the de facto standard for high-throughput wired communication channels, microwave and millimeter wave carrier frequencies are still the standard for wireless links. However, the limited availability of spectrum restricts the data rates that can be achieved through these channels."
How to write with artificial intelligence -- Deep Writing
In the past few days, I've taught a machine learning algorithm how to write in the style of Harry Potter, Hamilton (the musical), and HBO's Silicon Valley. The mostly non-sensical, occasionally human-like, topically-flavored writing seems to be amusing not only to me, but to many others. Thus, I've made this quick tutorial to teach you how to create your own instances of "Deep Writing". This is not going to be an in-depth description of the underlying technology -- but instead, a step-by-step guide that anybody can follow (even if you have no coding or machine learning experience). Here is a very crude approximation of what is involved in the Deep Writing process. More than anything, this is meant to give you enough intuition and appreciation to follow along with the rest of the tutorial.

Mario Kart can make you a better driver as researchers find video games help awareness
Spending hours playing video games instead of running around outside has been widely blamed as the cause of many problems among young people. But while it may prevent players from getting enough sleep or exercise, new research has shown that spending hours in front of a games console can have a positive impact. Playing action-based video games like Mario Kart could actually improve real-life skills like driving, according to the study. Playing violent video games and watching violence on television can lead to more aggressive behaviour in children, according to a new report. Angry feelings can also affect children of all ages subjected to screen violence, both real and fictional.
