Volvo, Uber partner on self-driving cars

Uber and Volvo will invest a combined 300 million into a joint project to develop self-driving vehicles, the companies announced Thursday. In a statement, the companies said they will equip base vehicles with autonomous driving technology, ultimately moving toward manufacturing self-driving vehicles. Volvo will make the vehicles, while Uber purchases those vehicles and implement its own self-driving tech. "Over one million people die in car accidents every year," said Uber CEO Travis Kalanick in a statement.
An Industry Overdue for Disruption
Last week, I participated in a panel discussion on innovation versus implementation at the inaugural Precision Medicine Leaders' Summit in San Diego. As I spent time speaking with world-class researchers and leaders in the industry I was reminded that although we've made many scientific advances, the pharma industry has been slow to implement emerging technologies. And like many industries slow to adopt new technology the pharma industry is overdue for its own disruption. The current drug development process in the pharma industry is inefficient and unsustainable. It takes 10 to 15 years and 2.6 billion to bring a drug to market.

Study of Stonehenge across the UK confirms they were used as astronomical calculators
The mystique of the ancient stone circle of Stonehenge has long stoked people's imaginations. Theories as to what the Neolithic monument was used for include everything from a burial site to a place of healing. But a team of Australian researchers believes that the bluestone circle and similar formations of standing stones in the UK may actually have been built to track the movements of the sun, moon and stars thousands of years ago. They found strong alignments between the placement and orientation of the stones with the paths of the sun and moon and other features in their surroundings. Experts believe the analysis provides the first evidence to support theories that stone circles were used to measure or track the movement of heavenly bodies.

Computers trounce pathologists in predicting lung cancer type, severity
Computers can be trained to be more accurate than pathologists in assessing slides of lung cancer tissues, according to a new study by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine. The researchers found that a machine-learning approach to identifying critical disease-related features accurately differentiated between two types of lung cancers and predicted patient survival times better than the standard approach of pathologists classifying tumors by grade and stage. "Pathology as it is practiced now is very subjective," said Michael Snyder, PhD, professor and chair of genetics. "Two highly skilled pathologists assessing the same slide will agree only about 60 percent of the time. This approach replaces this subjectivity with sophisticated, quantitative measurements that we feel are likely to improve patient outcomes."
