Spookily powerful artificial intelligence (AI) systems may work so well because their structure exploits the fundamental laws of the universe, new research suggests. The new findings may help answer a longstanding mystery about a class of artificial intelligence that employ a strategy called deep learning. These deep learning or deep neural network programs, as they're called, are algorithms that have many layers in which lower-level calculations feed into higher ones. Deep neural networks often perform astonishingly well at solving problems as complex as beating the world's best player of the strategy board game Go or classifying cat photos, yet know one fully understood why. It turns out, one reason may be that they are tapping into the very special properties of the physical world, said Max Tegmark, a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a co-author of the new research.

Singapore AI data analytics startup Nugit raises 5.2M from Sequoia India
Singaporean Artificial intelligence data analytics startup Nugit Pte. Ltd. has raised 5.2 million in funding from Sequoia India. Founded in 2013, Nugit uses artificial intelligence, natural language generation, and visual design to help marketers generate more usable reports based on the big data generated by advertising activity. The company's platform provides analytics for digital marketers and C-suite professionals, turning data into decision-ready reports which flow straight back into the enterprise workflow. Artificial intelligence technology powers data cleaning, integration and harmonization of data sources in real time on Nugit's platform, while their Natural Language Generation technology adds on insights written in easy to understand language and "decision-ready" reports are then delivered via email or powerpoint. The reports themselves are said to be built around'smart stories' and beautiful visualizations that deliver better quality reporting in a shorter time frame.

Joining me today is Dr Michael Harre from the University's Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies. Michael is an artificial intelligence aficionado, try saying that 3 times fast, and lecturer in complex systems. Chris Neff: Can I ask first, what is artificial intelligence and secondly, what got you into artificial intelligence? What was your background, how did you come to this? Ahh.. There's no straight forward answer in the sort of...general definition but usually it's something that runs on a computer that;s trying to do something kinda human like but perhaps not being very..very good at it. Because my understanding is mostly a star trek, star wars aahhhh... Will Smith movies and other kind of.. Dr Michael Harre: Ah yeah there's some great movies out there and the movies out there umm..they portray a combination of robot and ah..robots with some form of human like intelligence but umm..what you see in the robots is a bit more like um..what we think of as human behaviour and sort of expressing our human mind ah..but that's not what we are able to do at all with artificial intelligence yet.
