The Power of Localization for Efficiently Learning Linear Separators with Noise

We introduce a new approach for designing computationally efficient learning algorithms that are tolerant to noise, and demonstrate its effectiveness by designing algorithms with improved noise tolerance guarantees for learning linear separators. We consider both the malicious noise model and the adversarial label noise model. For malicious noise, where the adversary can corrupt both the label and the features, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm for learning linear separators in $\Re^d$ under isotropic log-concave distributions that can tolerate a nearly information-theoretically optimal noise rate of $\eta = \Omega(\epsilon)$. For the adversarial label noise model, where the distribution over the feature vectors is unchanged, and the overall probability of a noisy label is constrained to be at most $\eta$, we also give a polynomial-time algorithm for learning linear separators in $\Re^d$ under isotropic log-concave distributions that can handle a noise rate of $\eta = \Omega\left(\epsilon\right)$. We show that, in the active learning model, our algorithms achieve a label complexity whose dependence on the error parameter $\epsilon$ is polylogarithmic. This provides the first polynomial-time active learning algorithm for learning linear separators in the presence of malicious noise or adversarial label noise.

Now the service has added a new feature that's a little different from the back-and-forth translation -- text-based chatbots. These are aimed at helping you improve your conversational skills and skills you might use in real life, such as ordering food, visiting a tourist attraction, shopping for clothing or catching a cab. A variety of scenarios will see you learning how to follow a set of directions, or talk with a doctor. According to the Duolingo chatbot Web page, these bots are programmed to react to thousands of different responses.
Predictive computational phenotyping and biomarker discovery using reference-free genome comparisons
Despite an era of supercomputing and increasingly precise instrumentation, many biological phenomena remain misunderstood. One approach to understanding such events is the elaboration of case-control studies, where a group of individuals that exhibit a given biological state (phenotype) is compared to a group of individuals that do not. In this setting, one seeks biological characteristics (biomarkers), that are predictive of the phenotype. Such biomarkers can serve as the basis for diagnostic tests, or they can guide the development of new therapies and drug treatments by providing insight on the biological processes that underlie a phenotype [1โ4]. With the help of computational tools, such studies can be conducted at a much larger scale and produce more significant results.

"The amount of attention an individual reader or watcher spends on an advertisement can be multiplied by their social influence โฆ in order to optimize their attention and influence per dollar. Done at the scale of millions, this is a job for AI." Although The Inevitable's aim is to describe technologies that will shape our future, it's clear that the first tendrils of that future reach back to today and that advertising is going to get cognified sooner than most suspect. In some ways, of course, it already has been.

Cosmic radiation may leave astronauts with long-term cases of 'space brain,' study says
Scientists studying the effects of radiation in rodents say that astronauts' exposure to galactic cosmic rays could face a host of cognitive problems, including chronic dementia. The UC Irvine-led study, published in Scientific Reports, adds to a growing body of research on the harmful effects humans may reckon with as they venture out longer and deeper into space, whether on trips to Mars or potentially beyond. "The most logical conclusion to draw from these studies is that cosmic radiation exposure poses a real and potentially detrimental neurocognitive risk for prolonged deep space travel," the study authors wrote. "With the growing realization that space is a radioactive environment comes the need to more completely define these risks with more certainty through continued research." It's well-known that radiation can damage neural tissue and hurt cognitive function; cancer patients with brain tumors who need radiotherapy end up with what the study authors called "severe and progressive cognitive deficits."

The round also includes prior lead investor Data Collective (DCVC), as well as return investors True Ventures, AME Cloud Ventures, DFJ, Innovation Endeavors, Obvious Ventures, and Two Sigma Ventures. New investors include Iconiq Capital, Prelude Ventures, and Tao Capital Partners. Zymergen also announced two additions to its Board of Directors: former U.S. Secretary of Energy and Nobel laureate Dr. Steven Chu, and SoftBank Group International Managing Director Deep Nishar, previously a longtime senior executive at Google and LinkedIn. College students eligible for Amazon's 2.5M AI competition - eCampus News
Amazon has announced the Alexa Prize, an annual university competition dedicated to accelerating the field of conversational artificial intelligence (AI). The goal of the inaugural competition is to build a "socialbot" on Alexa that will converse with people about popular topics and news events. The team with the highest-performing socialbot will win a 500,000 prize. Additionally, a prize of 1 million will be awarded to the winning team's university if their socialbot achieves the grand challenge of conversing coherently and engagingly with humans for 20 minutes. Teams of university students can submit applications now and the contest will conclude at AWS re:invent in November 2017, where the winners will be announced.
