Amazon Go: A Game Changer For The Retail Industry

Forbes - Tech

Consumers'Couch Shopped' On Black Friday: Here Are The Likely Retail Winners And Losers Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos walks onstage for the launch of the new Amazon Fire Phone, in Seattle. Amazon.com has been tiptoeing into the world of brick-and-mortar retailing for some time now. There have been small outposts at colleges and a few beautifully designed bookstores have been popping up in cities with rumors for several hundred more. As I have said before regarding these efforts, they appear to be sleight of hand experiments designed to distract the retail world from the game changing concepts that are to come. Amazon Go is one such idea, one that could drastically change not just food retailing, but every segment of retail. The premise is simple and the video introduction that Amazon released Monday will surely be among the most watched futuristic retail videos around.

Uber acquires Geometric Intelligence to create an AI lab

#artificialintelligence

Ride-hailing requires a lot of machine smarts to maintain a competitive edge, so it's not surprising to see Uber make a strategic acquisition in the artificial intelligence space. The company has acquired Geometric Intelligence, a startup co-founded by academic researchers with AI experience, and its team will provide the core for a new central AI lab being established at Uber's SF HQ. Uber's doing a lot with machine learning already through its research team in Pittsburgh, but they're focused specifically on solving issues related to autonomous driving. This new core team will be looking at applications for AI more broadly, with a focus on basic research that's likely to have impact across a range of potential applications, including things like route management. It's also yet another sign that Uber wants to be passed among tech bigs like Google, Apple and Microsoft whose interests range beyond a single domain.

Google alters search autocomplete to remove 'are Jews evil' suggestion

The Guardian

Google has altered autocomplete suggestions in its search engine after it was alerted to antisemitic, sexist and racists entries. Google's autocomplete feature aims to suggest common searches after a user enters one or more words into the site's search box or address bar of its Chrome browser. Typing the phrase "are Jews" into Google, the search engine suggested "evil", for "are women" it again suggested "evil" and for "are Muslims" it suggested "bad", an Observer article reported. On Monday the searches for Jews and women no longer returned those results, although the "are Muslims bad" autocomplete was still present. A Google spokesperson said: "We took action within hours of being notified on Friday of the autocomplete results."

Google's Deepmind Is Going Public for Researchers

#artificialintelligence

Alphabet Inc.'s artificial intelligence division Google DeepMind is making the maze-like game platform it uses for many of its experiments available to other researchers and the general public. DeepMind is putting the entire source code for its training environment -- which it previously called Labyrinth and has now renamed as DeepMind Lab -- on the open-source depository GitHub, the company said Monday. Anyone will be able to download the code and customize it to help train their own artificial intelligence systems. They will also be able to create new game levels for DeepMind Lab and upload these to GitHub. The decision to make this AI test bed available to the public is further evidence of DeepMind's decision to embrace more openness around its research.

Uber launches artificial intelligence lab - BBC News

#artificialintelligence

Ride-sharing service Uber has acquired a New York-based artificial intelligence start-up which it hopes can speed up its progress in creating self-driving cars. The deal, for an undisclosed sum, will see Uber gain 15 specialist researchers who will form a new division at the company known as Uber AI Labs. Geometric Intelligence's co-founder Gary Marcus told the BBC the team would have a wide brief - ranging from improving traffic predictions to working towards a future of flying cars. Recent reports have suggested Uber's aggressive growth, which has required heavily subsidising fares, meant the firm lost more than $2bn (ยฃ1.6bn) last year. That figure is likely to go up in 2016.
