Marked Temporal Dynamics Modeling based on Recurrent Neural Network

We are now witnessing the increasing availability of event stream data, i.e., a sequence of events with each event typically being denoted by the time it occurs and its mark information (e.g., event type). A fundamental problem is to model and predict such kind of marked temporal dynamics, i.e., when the next event will take place and what its mark will be. Existing methods either predict only the mark or the time of the next event, or predict both of them, yet separately. Indeed, in marked temporal dynamics, the time and the mark of the next event are highly dependent on each other, requiring a method that could simultaneously predict both of them. To tackle this problem, in this paper, we propose to model marked temporal dynamics by using a mark-specific intensity function to explicitly capture the dependency between the mark and the time of the next event. Extensive experiments on two datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods at predicting marked temporal dynamics.

Moderate screen use 'boosts teen wellbeing'

A study of screen time and mental wellbeing among teenagers has suggested moderate use of devices may be beneficial in a connected world. The researchers collected self-reported data from 120,000 English 15-year-olds about their digital device habits. They found a "Goldilocks effect" where a few hours of device-use seemed to boost mental wellbeing. One developmental psychologist welcomed the paper but said there was still room for more study. "Moderate engagement in digital activities is not harmful," notes the paper, published today in the journal Psychological Science.

Kaggle, the nearly ten year old startup that hosts competitions for data science aficionados, is hosting a competition with a $1 million purse to improve the classification of potentially cancerous lesions in the lungs. The funds are being provided by the Laura and John Arnold Foundation and Booz Allen Hamilton as part of the 2017 Data Science Bowl. This isn't the first time that major prize money has been given away to accelerate research in targeted areas. The Data Science Bowl featured a competition last year to identify signs of heart failure with a $200,000 purse and the year before it tasked data scientists to assess ocean health. The $1 million going towards this year's competition will be the most ever given out as a prize on the site.

The 90-day Data Science Bowl competition will award winners with $1 million in prizes. Funds for the prize purse will be provided by the Laura and John Arnold Foundation.

In his seminal book "Superintelligence," the Swedish philosopher Nick Bostrom highlights the need to draft a set of rules to keep machines under human control much before an inevitable "intelligence explosion" occurs. European lawmakers, it seems, are listening. On Thursday, the European Parliament's legal affairs committee approved a wide-ranging report that outlines a possible framework under which humans would interact with AI and robots. Among other things, the report mulls over the need to create a specific legal status for robots -- one that designates them as "electronic persons" -- and the need for designers to incorporate a "kill switch" into their designs. In addition, the report also calls for the creation of a European agency for robotics and AI that would be capable of responding to new opportunities and challenges arising from technological advancements in robotics.
