Could artificial intelligence kill us off?

You're awake, you're sentient, you might even be upright. You're not comatose or dead, and it's reasonable to assume that if you were on some kind of powerful mind-altering drug then you wouldn't be reading this. The point is, you're here, and you're alive, so therefore you're conscious. OK then, since you're conscious and I'm conscious and everyone else is conscious, go ahead. Does it belong to the mind or the body, or does it exist outside both? Is consciousness part of our souls, or does it live in the things we create – our art, our music, our cities and wars? Could it be mechanical or electronic, and, if so, what makes it operate? Most pressingly of all, is it possible we have now made for ourselves a new kind of consciousness, one which exists independently? If so, then what the hell have we got ourselves into? The search for a definition of consciousness must lay claim to be the world's longest-running detective story. We've had our best minds on it ever since we developed brains big enough to ask questions and, still, we seem to be stumped. Plato and Aristotle couldn't fix it; Kant, Hume and Locke tried different angles; Schroedinger, Heisenberg and Einstein remained in awe before it. None of them came up with the final formula, the definitive, nailed-it for ever, silences-all-critics answer. Lately though, the hunt seems to have changed gear. Despite big differences about how best to conduct the search and where to look, several of the most persistent sleuths have found themselves disconcertingly close to agreement. No-one is yet at the stage when they are ready to call a press conference and announce to the world they have finally apprehended the suspect, but they have at least begun to converge on these two leads: the Omega Point and the Singularity. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin is an improbable prophet, partly because he's dead, and partly because he's still associated with a famous palaeontological fraud.


Mind-reading AI knows whether you are guilty or innocent

A superhuman skill once the preserve of comic book heroes could soon become a reality. Scientists have used a combination of brain scanning and artificial intelligence to read the minds of'criminals' to determine whether they are guilty of knowingly committing a crime. This is the first time that neurobiological readings alone have been used to determine guilt, according to the study, and the findings could impact how we judge criminal responsibility in the future. A 2013 study found that researchers could predict how likely prisoners were to re-offend through brain scans. A team of neuroscientists at the Mind Research Network in Albuquerque studied a group of 96 male prisoners shortly before they were due to be released.

A new study analyzed people's actions in an'end times' scenario, using a closed beta test of the game ArcheAge as a proxy. While some turned to murder and other anti-social behaviours, the study found most people become more social in the face of impending disaster, creating new relationships even as they abandoned plans for the future. Artificial intelligence has a long history of boom and bust cycles. During A.I. booms, money flows through universities and industry labs, fueling promised advances that often sound like magic, if not panacea. Extreme optimism was particularly common in the field's early years. In 1960, for example, A.I. pioneer Herbert Simon suggested that "machines will be capable, within twenty years, of doing any work that a man can do," a claim echoed by the founder of the field, Marvin Minsky, in 1961. Despite the advances that have occured since that time -- most recently, breakthroughs in neural networks, a form of machine learning inspired by the biological structure of the brain -- today's leading researchers tend to be more circumspect about the potential of artificial intelligence in the near-term.

Could smartphones and other screens be decreasing the human attention span? Author Adam Alter thinks so. "Ten years ago, before the iPad and iPhone were mainstream, the average person had an attention span of about 12 seconds," Alter tells Fresh Air's Dave Davies. Now, he says, "research suggests that there's been a drop from 12 to eight seconds ... shorter than the attention of the average goldfish, which is nine seconds." Alter links our diminished attention spans to the "mainstream adoption of screens."

Mobileye Caps Wild Ride On Stock Market With $15.3 Billion Acquisition

Less than three years after its blockbuster IPO, Israeli company Mobileye has ridden the wave of self-driving car enthusiasm to a timely acquisition. Intel said on Monday that it would shell out $15.3 billion for Mobileye, which makes assisted driving software, in the biggest acquisition ever of an Israeli technology company. Intel will pay $63.54 per share in cash, which represents a 36% premium over Friday's closing price of $46.88. Shares of Mobileye surged 30% to $61.48 in morning trading, while shares of Intel slid 2%. The deal marks a happy end to Mobileye's short stint on the public markets.

Tapping the Potential of AI in Health Data Security

The ability of artificial intelligence to look for patterns in vast volumes of data - including large collections of unstructured data, which are commonly found in the healthcare sector - is presenting new potential ways for bolstering the security of patient information, says AI expert Navin Budhiraja of outsourcing vendor Infosys. "The nature [of healthcare data], how rapidly new [challenges] are appearing and how large and complex those systems are becoming, are making the security problems very, very hard," he says in an interview with Information Security Media Group. "So, how do you look at very large amounts of data - not necessarily knowing what you're looking for - and still actually try to find interesting patterns in there around who's accessing what; is their behavior expected or anomalous, and so on? I think the traditional ways of doing security, like where you have an anti-virus system or a particular way your firewall is configured because those are the best practice, are no longer applicable because of this complex IT environment," he says. "And those are exactly the kinds of challenges AI is very good at."
