Ford to cut 1,400 jobs in North America, Asia

#artificialintelligence

Ford -- facing heavy costs for new technology and slowing U.S. car sales -- is cutting 1,400 non-factory jobs in North America and Asia Pacific this year in an effort to boost profits and rescue its sagging stock price. The company will offer voluntary early retirement and separation packages to around 10 percent of salaried workers in departments such as sales, marketing and human resources. It expects the actions to be complete by the end of September. The cuts are the biggest to Ford's U.S. white collar staff since 2007, when 7,200 workers took voluntary buyout packages. Ford believes it will meet its targets by voluntary means, spokesman Mike Moran said Wednesday.

Partners, GE to launch landmark artificial intelligence center

Boston Herald

In a newly created Center for Clinical Data Science, teams from both companies will develop, test and deploy artificial intelligence software at Partners' largest hospitals: Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital. "This is about creating digital tools that will have a profound impact on medicine, said John Flannery, chief executive of GE Healthcare. "By leveraging AI across every patient interaction, workflow challenge and administrative need, this collaboration will drive improvements in quality, cost and access." The new technologies could reduce unnecessary procedures such as some biopsies and automate tedious medical image review, the companies said. The first use of the technology will focus on medical images from x-rays, MRIs and other scans, which would help determine the impact of a stroke, quickly identify emergency room patients with fractures and help track how tumors respond to new cancer treatments.

Rather, there has been a shift in how people are needed to leverage and optimize the opportunities AI can create. The brand started using AI in outbound marketing, and is now looking at inbound.

Training: Introduction to Machine Learning and Data Mining

@machinelearnbot

Machine learning automatically recognizes complex, previously unknown, novel, and useful patterns and information in all types of data. Data driven algorithms are the wave of the future and their results improve as the amount of data increases. Machine learning algorithms are used in search engines, image analysis, multimedia database retrieval, bioinformatics, industrial automation, speech recognition, and many other fields. This survey course covers the concepts and principles of a large variety of data mining methods, equips you with a working knowledge of these techniques and prepares you to apply them to real problems. Nasdaq Rolls Out AI Service For Investors PYMNTS.com

#artificialintelligence

Recently, Nasdaq Inc. announced the launch of a new service that looks to put a subset of artificial intelligence technologies toward growing investor profit. Called the Nasdaq Analytics Hub, the new service will leverage machine learning to sift through social media, central bank, retail sentiment and end-of-day trading data, deriving insight that fund managers and traders can then leverage to enhance investment strategies. "We back test the data using a number of strategies," Mike O'Rourke, global head of Machine Intelligence and Data Services at Nasdaq, told Reuters in an interview. "Then we use machine intelligence to add value-added analytics to the data that allows firms to make it more actionable." The newswire noted that financial technology startup Lucena Research scrutinizes the data, sourced from Nasdaq as well as a number of third-party providers.

Apple's developer academy: Inside the elite school where iPhone developers of the future are being trained

The Independent - Tech

There are places people leave and places people go. Naples might be Italy's third-biggest city, but it is losing those some of those people all the time. The city was once one of the industrial engines of Italy -- a history still evident from the husks and dirt of factories in parts of its centre -- and its promenades still hold some of the splendid grandeur of a city known for its contribution to the arts, travel, literature, food, football and crime. But in recent years, like many cities built on industry and manufacturing, some of that glory has faded away. And its young people have left, too -- giving Naples that sense of being a place you start, not where you end.

One Candidate's Plan to Resist Trump by Teaching Kids to Code

WIRED

Alec Ross knows Trump country well. The former Obama administration staffer hails from the heart of coal country in Charleston, West Virginia. He grew up alongside the very people that President Trump likes to say Washington has left behind. As with Trump, Ross believes that government needs to do a better job lifting up these "forgotten men and women." Unlike Trump, Ross believes accomplishing that goal has little to do with sealing off the borders or reviving the coal industry at the expense of the world's climate.

Intelligent people can overcome the 'instinct' of religion

Daily Mail - Science & tech

From Stephen Hawking to Alan Turing, many of the most intelligent people in the world are atheists. In the hope of understanding the link between intelligence and religion, researchers have created a model based on historical evidence and a recent survey. The findings suggest that religion should be considered an instinct, with intelligence the ability to rise above one's instincts. From Stephen Hawking to Alan Turing, many of the most intelligent people in the world are atheists. Hawking famously said: 'Science can explain the universe, we don't need God to explain why there is something rather than nothing' The researchers argue that religion should be seen as a separate evolved domain or instinct, whereas intelligence allows people to rise above their instincts.
