Google may be an "AI first" company, but few people who work there actually use the term artificial intelligence. That's because it doesn't actually describe the seismic shift currently happening across all of the Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) unit's products. The better word for that process is machine learning, which is the technology that's making our computers think and act more like humans, said Peter Norvig, an AI scientist and a director of research at Google. "Sundar has come out and said we're an AI first company, and that's a pretty bold statement," Norvig told The Street. "Internally we use machine learning more...it's what we're going to use to become an AI-first company."

Researchers argue that as humans transitioned from a sedentary, apelike existence to a more physically demanding, hunter-gatherer lifestyle about 2 million years ago, we started carrying out foraging tasks, which may explain the connection between the brain and physical activity. Two University of Arizona researchers who run a research program on exercise and the brain have developed an'adaptive capacity model' for understanding, from an evolutionary neuroscience perspective, how physical activity impacts brain structure and function.

Elon Musk could reveal launch of Tesla's model 3 on Sunday

Electric car maker Tesla Inc may have an announcement related to the release date of its first mass-market Model 3 sedan on Sunday. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk said there would be'News on Sunday', in reply to a tweet by Sydney-based Douglas Bailey who asked Musk to end the speculation on the Model 3 release date. Hackers could monitor your BRAINWAVES to steal passwords

Researchers have revealed that brainwaves can be used to steal online passwords. A team at the University of Alabama at Birmingham found brainwave-sensing headsets, also known as EEG or electroencephalograph headsets, put users at risk. They have become commonplace both as medical devices but also as game controllers, ranging in price from $150 to $800. Researchers say EEG devices and future brain computer interfaces can be hacked to monitor what a user is typing. Elon Musk's latest company Neuralink is working to link the human brain with a machine interface by creating micron-sized devices.

It's not you – solving a Rubik's cube quickly is officially hard

If you thought solving a Rubik's cube was difficult, you were right and maths can back you up. A recent study shows that the question of whether a scrambled Rubik's cube of any size can be solved in a given number of moves is what's called NP-complete – that's maths lingo for a problem even mathematicians find hard to solve. To prove that the problem is NP-complete, Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers Erik Demaine, Sarah Eisenstat, and Mikhail Rudoy showed that figuring out how to solve a Rubik's cube with any number of squares on a side in the smallest number of moves will also give you a solution to another problem known to be NP-complete: the Hamiltonian path problem. That question asks whether there is route that visits each vertex exactly once in a given graph consisting of a collection of vertices connected by edges, like a triangle, pentagram, or the vast connections in a social network such as Facebook. It's reminiscent of the travelling salesperson problem, which aims to find the shortest route that visits several cities only once, probably the most famous NP-complete question of all.


Amazon's Echo now doubles up as an intercom

Amazon Echo is getting an intercom function which allows users to'drop in' to the speakers remotely. Users can now access their Echo and Echo Dot speakers using different devices or the smartphone app. The feature was announced today in the US and will be available in the coming days. Users need to download the Alexa app on Android or iOS. To set up the intercom users have to go into the settings page in the Alexa app and name the device based on the room it is in. Users can then enable the'drop-in' feature.


How To Enhance Cognitive Abilities? Dark Chocolate Could Boost Brain Skills, Study Finds

Regular dietary intake of cocoa and chocolate could improve general cognition, attention, processing speed, and working memory, a new study found. In a recent review published in Frontiers in Nutrition, Italian researchers studied the effect of cocoa flavanols on the brain and the impact its additional consumption has on the body. The research found participants showed enhancements in working memory performance and improved visual information processing after eating cocoa flavanols -- a class of natural compounds that has neuroprotective effects. The study also found that women who consumed cocoa after a night of total sleep deprivation actually counteracted the cognitive impairment a night without sleep results in. The study, which was conducted on young and healthy adults, investigated the effects of relatively long-term consumption of cocoa flavanols -- ranging from 5 days up to 3 months -- in elderly individuals.
