AI: the new frontier for optimization

#artificialintelligence

Software control of both IT equipment and the supporting data center infrastructure has long been a fundamental tool for monitoring and managing both operational and energy efficiency. As financial pressures, data regulations and corporate social responsibility (CSR) demand data center operators to stay focused on improving efficiency, such tools will become more important and increasingly integrated. Separate from systems management software suites, data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tools assist in the management of supporting infrastructure such as cooling and backup power supply systems. Facilities management software, like building and energy management systems (BMS), assist in the monitoring of building or site-level functions including air conditioning and electricity supply.

6 social entrepreneurs helping build a better tomorrow

The UN's Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 objectives to tackle global issues like hunger, joblessness, poverty, climate change, and food waste, among others. Long term, Carroll envisions a world in which Skycision can help tackle macro issues affecting global food security. Womensphere has five cornerstone initiatives: Leveraging technology and media to educate and empower; developing programs to unleash women's potential; advancing the next generation of women leaders; mobilizing the global community; and recognizing world-changing innovators at the Womensphere Global Awards. The Ocean Cleanup, founded by Slat in 2013, is a pollution collection system driven by ocean currents.

Prototyping a Better Tomorrow

This new project is reminiscent of Hieroglyph, a project from Arizona State University that is similarly aimed at leveraging science fiction to make positive change in the real world. Like the Hieroglyph project, the Science Fiction Advisory Council will be launching with a short story collection. In July, XPRIZE plans to publish an online anthology of original science-fiction stories by members of the advisory council recounting the experiences of passengers on a fictional flight from Tokyo to San Francisco who are mysteriously transported 20 years into the future. The stories, published at Seat14C.com, will presumably include visions of some of the "preferred future states" that XPRIZE seeks to identify, and will be followed by quarterly meetings of the advisers as they build out their roadmaps for avoiding dystopia and reaching those better futures.

The Science of AI and the Art of Social Responsibility

#artificialintelligence

That impact will be significant. This year alone at least 1 billion people will be touched in some way by artificial intelligence, which is transforming everything from financial services to transportation, energy, education and retail. In healthcare alone, IBM Watson is engaged in serious efforts to help radiologists identify markers of disease; to help oncologists identify personalized treatments for cancer patients; and to help neuroscientists identify genetic links to diseases like ALS, paving the way for advanced drug discovery.

Tackling society's big problems with systems theory

That decision led to the creation of the new Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS) two years ago, as a way to support and coordinate research using analytical tools to tackle major societal issues. Jadbabaie's own research began with undergraduate studies in electrical engineering and then focused on systems engineering. After a postdoc stint at Yale, he spent 14 years at the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, with joint appointments in the Department of Computer and Information Science and the Department of Operations, Information and Decisions at the Wharton School, where he earned many awards for his work in the areas of optimization-based control, network science and network economics, and multiagent coordination. Large, interactive networks, whether they be social networks, banking systems, teams of robots, or transportation systems, all involve the interaction of many different components including technology, economics, psychology, and communications.

The Next CSR Challenge: Engaging in a Dialogue About Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Unless it's fully grasped for its benefits, companies that use AI are putting their brands at risk if society doesn't adequately understand how it benefits from the technology. That's my principal take-away from reading a relatively new book – "Connect, How Companies Succeed by Engaging Radically with Society." "I would put on that panel representatives of government, unions, civil society, NGOs – a real cross-section of key stakeholders. The authors call for "radical openness" in the sharing of information.

Pymble Ladies' College using data to track students' performance

ZDNet

With a focus on numbers to measure a student's success flagged as passé, Justin Raymond, Dean of Curriculum Innovation at Pymble Ladies' College in Sydney, has implemented an analytics platform at the all-girls school that tracks an individual to monitor their overall performance. As part of the digital journey at the school, Raymond implemented a platform that tracks students "from functioning to thriving", gathering their performance data from each teacher and class the student is in. The concept of sharing data on a student was a big paradigm shift for the school; Raymond said teachers would previously keep that information for themselves and share it on occasion with parents. He said that the school is now dabbling with business insights and its existing dashboards to gain further insights into each individual student's learning journey, and is also working with its dashboards from an enrolment perspective to be able to gain a better insight into areas such as where each student resides "It's about really making the most of our big data sets and being proactive," he said.
