Nuance & Partners HealthCare Team Up to Accelerate Adoption of AI Apps for Diagnostic Imaging

#artificialintelligence

Nuance today announced the signing of a multi-year strategic agreement with Partners HealthCare. The two organizations will optimize the process for rapid development, validation and utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) for radiologists at the point of care, and Nuance intends to make the new algorithms available through the Nuance AI Marketplace for Diagnostic Imaging.

How AI and robotics can transform CSR

#artificialintelligence

In his 2011 book charting the history of corporate social responsibility, the academic and futurist Wayne Visser divided CSR into five ages: greed, philanthropy, marketing, management, and responsibility. Each age related to a particular stage for companies: defensive, charitable, promotional, strategic, and systemic. As we enter 2018 I am convinced that a new age of CSR has begun. It is known as the intelligence age and the corresponding stage is the cognitive era, when machines are deployed to radically transform and improve CSR processes. While ethics, sustainability, the multi-stakeholder model, and CSR have gained in popularity, problems with the management, effectiveness, need, and efficacy impede progress.

The Future Computed: Artificial Intelligence and its role in society - The Official Microsoft Blog

#artificialintelligence

Today Microsoft is releasing a new book, The Future Computed: Artificial Intelligence and its role in society. The two of us have written the foreword for the book, and our teams collaborated to write its contents. As the title suggests, the book provides our perspective on where AI technology is going and the new societal issues it has raised.

Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility

Communications of the ACM

I think often of Ender's Game these days. In this award-winning 1985 science-fiction novel by Orson Scott Card (based on a 1977 short story with the same title), Ender is being trained at Battle School, an institution designed to make young children into military commanders against an unspecified enemy (http://bit.ly/2hYQMDF). Ender's team engages in a series of computer-simulated battles, eventually destroying the enemy's planet, only to learn then that the battles were very real and a real planet has been destroyed.

From bank to digital bank: How tech can strengthen lenders for a better tomorrow

#artificialintelligence

Nowadays, customers expect to be at the centre of a bank's engagement model. For banks to thrive, the key is how well they respond to the seismic shift in customer demand and give them complete control of the financial supply chain. Thus, a holistic understanding of customer needs is critical for service providers to embed their offerings into customers' lives. Of the many fintech players in India, a few will emerge as winners, creating sustainable business models that will withstand the ups and downs of economic cycles. These models will focus on retaining customer loyalty by evolving customer expectations; strengthening IT infrastructure, in an environment of exponential technology advancements; using data-points to their advantage; seeking appropriate funding; lowering cost of operations; and offering value-addition.

London Wants to Kick Uber Out of the City

WIRED

London could lose all of its Ubers, courtesy of the city's transportation agency. On Friday, Transport for London announced it would not renew the ridehailing giant's license to operate in the city, citing the company's "lack of corporate responsibility." The license expires September 30, though, unsurprisingly, Uber has declared it will exercise its right to an appeal. The company is able to continue operating in the city as long as the legal process drags on, but it didn't wait for its lawyers to prepare their case before dusting off the weapon that has carried it through many a battle: public fervor. Right after TfL dropped its news, Uber posted a petition on Change.org.

AI: the new frontier for optimization

#artificialintelligence

Increasing data center efficiency and reducing the overall energy consumption are today major concerns for both the industry and indeed wider society. As the amount of data being generated, stored and shared continues to grow, the outcome will inevitably cause a demand for physical data center space to increase. Software control of both IT equipment and the supporting data center infrastructure has long been a fundamental tool for monitoring and managing both operational and energy efficiency. As financial pressures, data regulations and corporate social responsibility (CSR) demand data center operators to stay focused on improving efficiency, such tools will become more important and increasingly integrated. Furthermore, it is predicted that both developers and end-users will make use of the most cutting-edge advances in software technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), to meet the challenges posed by the critical importance of energy efficiency.

6 social entrepreneurs helping build a better tomorrow

Mashable

As the trend of social entrepreneurship takes root in economies around the globe, future-focused impact investors are stepping up to the plate to help build a better world for generations to come. The UN's Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 objectives to tackle global issues like hunger, joblessness, poverty, climate change, and food waste, among others. Below, we've selected six young people as examples of entrepreneurs bringing us closer to turning the UN's SDGs into realities. Despite the fact that the average U.S. farmer spends around 1,000 hours a year manually scouting fields for signs of disease and other areas of stress, around 6% of annual crops are lost due to undetected threats, explains Brendan Carroll, the founder of Skycision. In developing nations, this number can be as high as 35%.

Prototyping a Better Tomorrow

Slate

This new project is reminiscent of Hieroglyph, a project from Arizona State University that is similarly aimed at leveraging science fiction to make positive change in the real world. Like the Hieroglyph project, the Science Fiction Advisory Council will be launching with a short story collection. In July, XPRIZE plans to publish an online anthology of original science-fiction stories by members of the advisory council recounting the experiences of passengers on a fictional flight from Tokyo to San Francisco who are mysteriously transported 20 years into the future. The stories, published at Seat14C.com, will presumably include visions of some of the "preferred future states" that XPRIZE seeks to identify, and will be followed by quarterly meetings of the advisers as they build out their roadmaps for avoiding dystopia and reaching those better futures.
