GSA launches AI Challenge to drive better healthcare outcomes
WASHINGTON, DC โ Yesterday, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) launched the Applied AI Healthcare Challenge, a prize competition seeking diverse and practical solutions to help federal agencies provide the highest level of medical care. The Centers of Excellence (CoE) is working in partnership with Challenge.gov, In particular, GSA encourages large and small enterprises, women-owned, minority-owned, small disadvantaged, and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses to participate. "Technology Transformation Services drives innovation by partnering with technologists in all sectors to identify, demonstrate, test, and prove out technology products that improve delivery of government services and benefits. The Applied AI Healthcare Challenge helps the public and private sector work together to identify promising new AI technology products that support healthcare services and initiatives, centering accessibility, privacy, and customer experience," said TTS Director and FAS Deputy Commissioner Ann Lewis.
The Morning After: A Japanese restaurant combats 'sushi terrorism' with AI cameras
Many people in Japan have been outraged by a recent trend dubbed "sushi terrorism." Videos across social media show people carrying out all kinds of unhygienic acts, like licking the spoon for a container of green tea powder. Another video, which has more than 98 million views on Twitter, showed a person licking the top of a soy sauce bottle and a teacup's rim before putting them back at a branch of the Sushiro chain. The company said it has replaced all the soy sauce bottles and cleaned every cup at the affected restaurant. To combat this gross trend, one chain, Kura Sushi, said it would use artificial intelligence to look for "suspicious opening and closing of sushi plate covers," Nikkei Asia reported. The company plans to upgrade existing cameras, used to track the dishes customers take from conveyor belts to determine their bill, by early March.

Github has announced plans to cut its workforce by 10% and will go fully remote, closing all of its physical offices as their leaves expire. They announced a hiring freeze back in January, and this will continue as part of the cost cutting operations. As well as shutting down their physical operations and showing staff the door, they'll also be conducting efficiency-led changes throughout the business to bring costs down. If it seems like there are new layoffs announced every day, it's because there practically are. We've seen layoffs from all across the tech sector, including household names like Google, Meta and Microsoft.

The James Webb space telescope cost $10bn (ยฃ8.3bn) to build, but it left Google nursing losses of more than $160bn after the search engine's new chatbot answered a question about it incorrectly. Google and Microsoft, in separate surprise announcements, confirmed they plan to offer dueling generative AI debuts over the next two days. Today, Google unveiled a new ChatGPT-like chatbot named Bard, as the company races to catch up in the wake of ChatGPT's massive viral success (growing faster than TikTok, apparently). In a blog post, CEO Sundar Pichai said Bard is now open to "trusted testers," with plans to make it available to the public "in the coming weeks." In addition, the company announced a streaming event called Live from Paris focused on "Search, Maps and beyond," to be livestreamed on YouTube at 8:30 am ET on February 8th.

Google isn't about to let Microsoft or anyone else make a swipe for its search crown without a fight. The company announced today that it will roll out a chatbot named Bard "in the coming weeks." The launch appears to be a response to ChatGPT, the sensationally popular artificial intelligence chatbot developed by startup OpenAI with funding from Microsoft. Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, wrote in a blog post that Bard is already available to "trusted testers" and designed to put the "breadth of the world's knowledge" behind a conversational interface. It uses a smaller version of a powerful AI model called LaMDA, which Google first announced in May 2021 and is based on similar technology to ChatGPT.
