Snapchat adds OpenAI-powered chatbot and proactively apologizes for what it might say

Engadget

Snap announced today that it's adding an OpenAI chatbot (similar to ChatGPT) to Snapchat. "My AI" is an experimental feature initially available for $3.99-per-month Snapchat subscribers, although the company reportedly wants to expand it to all users eventually. My AI will appear as a regular Snap user profile, suggesting the company is marketing it less as an all-purpose writing machine and more as a virtual friend. "The big idea is that in addition to talking to our friends and family every day, we're going to talk to AI every day," CEO Evan Spiegel told The Verge. "And this is something we're well positioned to do as a messaging service."

Coca-Cola Signs Deal With OpenAI's DALL-E and ChatGPT

#artificialintelligence

The Coca-Cola Company is getting deep into the artificial intelligence game thanks to a newly-inked deal that will see it partnering with OpenAI. The press release announcing the deal did not say how much the partnership between Coca-Cola, OpenAI, and the Bain consulting firm is worth, but given that the AI firm recently got a multi-billion-dollar contract with Microsoft, there's a good chance it's worth a pretty penny -- and it seems particularly significant because of Coke's storied history in advertising, a domain that the release seems to hint could be a target for the AI tech. In the statement, Coca-Cola CEO James Quincy said that the company is "excited to unleash the next generation of creativity offered by this rapidly emerging technology" using tech including DALL-E and ChatGPT. "We see opportunities to enhance our marketing through cutting-edge AI," Quincy said, "along with exploring ways to improve our business operations and capabilities." Coke is the first company to sign on to Bain and OpenAI's new partnership, and although there's no word yet on exactly what the deal will entail, the press release hints at marketing, sales, and human resources implementations, the latter two of which sound pretty dystopian, to be honest.

As Microsoft embraces AI, it says sayonara to the metaverse

#artificialintelligence

Before the recent explosion of hype around artificial intelligence (AI), the metaverse was anointed the Next Big Thing, ready to transform the world, technology, and work in ways never before imagined. Soon we would all live and work together in a virtual world far more interesting, vital, and productive than the drab reality in which we're stuck. It wasn't just Mark Zuckerberg who led the metaverse charge by changing Facebook's name to Meta. Microsoft hyped it as well, notably when CEO Satya Nadella said, "I can't overstate how much of a breakthrough this is," in his keynote speech at Microsoft Ignite two years ago. That was then, in the long-ago, unenlightened days of early 2021.
