MD Anderson Benches IBM Watson In Setback For Artificial Intelligence In Medicine

#artificialintelligence

It was one of those amazing "we're living in the future" moments. In an October 2013 press release, IBM declared that MD Anderson, the cancer center that is part of the University of Texas, "is using the IBM Watson cognitive computing system for its mission to eradicate cancer." Well, now that future is past. The partnership between IBM and one of the world's top cancer research institutions is falling apart. The project is on hold, MD Anderson confirms, and has been since late last year.

Machine Learning for Media Monitoring - with Signal Chief Data Scientist -

#artificialintelligence

Episode Summary: One facet of business that nearly any industry has in common is the need to stay on top of news in their respective market, including competitor strategies or understanding changes in news related to the field. Media monitoring is a domain that machine learning (ML) is well suited for, with it's ability to coax out headlines, contextual information, and financial data from the seemingly endless stream of social, blog, and other information on the web today. Signal is a company that uses ML specifically for these purposes. In this episode, we speak with Signal's Chief Data Scientist and Co-founder Dr. Miguel Martinez, who dives into real business use cases illustrating the use of machine learning for media monitoring across industries. Brief Recognition: Dr. Miguel Martinez is chief data scientist at Signal, where he manages a team of data scientists to transform best algorithms from the fields of machine learning, information retrieval, and natural language processing into large-scale commercial products.

Ford to invest $1 billion in artificial intelligence for your car

#artificialintelligence

Ford will pour $1 billion over the next five years into an artificial intelligence company tasked with developing the technology that will one day drive its autonomous vehicles. The technology could also be licensed to other automakers in the future, executives said. Pittsburgh-based Argo AI was founded late last year by Bryan Salesky and Peter Rander, who previously worked on self-driving car initiatives at Google and Uber, respectively. The company will include the staff inside Ford that has been developing its virtual driver system for the past several years. In a phone call last week, CEO Mark Fields said the investment will help Ford bring its self-driving cars to market by its previously stated goal of 2021.

IBM Brings Machine Learning to the Private Cloud

#artificialintelligence

IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced IBM Machine Learning, the first cognitive platform for continuously creating, training and deploying a high volume of analytic models in the private cloud at the source of vast corporate data stores. Even using the most advanced techniques, data scientists โ€“ in shortest supply among today's IT skills1 โ€“ might spend days or weeks developing, testing and retooling even a single analytic model one step at a time. IBM has extracted the core machine learning technology from IBM Watson and will initially make it available where much of the world's enterprise data resides: the z System mainframe, the operational core of global organizations where billions of daily transactions are processed by banks, retailers, insurers, transportation firms and governments. IBM Machine Learning also for the first time deploys Cognitive Automation for Data Scientists from IBM Research to assist data scientists in choosing the right algorithm for the data by scoring their data against the available algorithms and providing the best match for their needs. The service also considers various circumstances โ€“ such as what the algorithm is needed to do and how fast it needs to produce results. Clients are beginning to see the value in IBM Machine Learning for z/OS.
