Sex robots with 'resistance setting' let men simulate rape and should be outlawed, say campaigners
A sex robot with a "resistance setting" that allows men to simulate rape should be banned, a lawyer has said. Kate Parker, who runs a charity which teaches school pupils about consent, warned the "uniquely sinister" technology normalised sexual assault. Robotics company True Companion sells a $9,995 (ยฃ7,408) sex doll with programmable personalities including "Frigid Farrah". The American manufacturer has advertised the character as "reserved and shy" and told customers "if touched in a private area, more than likely she will not be too appreciative of your advance". The company said the "Roxxxy Gold" robot offered men the chance to "realise their most private sexual dreams", a promise some critics saw as "encouraging rapists to find a supposedly safe outlet" for their crimes.

Appvance Launches AI-Driven Test Automation
Appvance has announced a breakthrough using artificial intelligence algorithms to automatically create and maintain scripts for testing software applications. By modeling human testers, including manual and test automation tasks such as scripting, Appvance has developed algorithms and expert systems to take on those tasks, similar to how driverless vehicle software models what a human driver does. AI-driven test automation is available to preview today, commercially in October, and requires no changes or added code in applications under test. Most software testing today is manual (up to 90% based on recent industry surveys). The rest is semi-automated by writing scripts in various languages such as Selenium or Java to repeat actions for future tests.

Industrial Internet Consortium Launches Smart Factory Machine Learning Testbed
WIRE)--The Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), the world's leading organization transforming business and society by accelerating the adoption of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), today announced the Smart Factory Machine Learning for Predictive Maintenance Testbed. The testbed is led by two companies, Plethora IIoT, a company, designing and developing cutting-edge answers for Industry 4.0, and Xilinx, the leading provider of All Programmable technology. This innovative testbed explores machine-learning techniques and evaluates algorithmic approaches for time-critical predictive maintenance. This knowledge leads to actionable insight enabling companies to move away from traditional preventative maintenance to predictive maintenance, which minimizes unplanned downtime and optimizes system operation. This would ultimately help manufacturers increase availability, improve energy efficiency and extend the lifespan of high-volume CNC manufacturing production systems.
Amazon Is Scouring the Globe for AI Talent @themotleyfool #stocks $GOOGL, $AMZN, $GOOG
Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has become one of the leaders in the emerging field of artificial intelligence (AI). Many of the ways the company uses the technology go on behind the scenes for things such as improving search results, better product recommendations, and enhanced forecasting and inventory management. The more public face of Amazon's AI ambitions can be found in its Echo family of smart speakers powered by Alexa, its voice-activated digital assistant, which has become the leader in the burgeoning smart-speaker market. With that much riding on AI, it should come as no surprise that Amazon has announced plans to expand its AI research by building a new R&D center in Barcelona, Spain. Amazon is setting up AI labs around the globe in search of AI talent.
Facebook heads to Canada in search of the next big AI advance
The first genuinely impressive AI assistant may well have a Canadian accent. Facebook announced today that it is tapping into Canada's impressive supply of artificial-intelligence talent and expertise by creating a major AI research center in Montreal. Several big recent advances in AI can be traced back to Canadian research labs, and Facebook is hoping that the new lab may help it take advantage of whatever comes next. The new center will focus, in particular, on an area of AI known as reinforcement learning (see "10 Breakthrough Technologies 2017: Reinforcement Learning"). The center will seek to apply this and other novel approaches to language, with the aim of producing more coherent and useful virtual assistants, says Yann LeCun, director of AI research at Facebook.
