On Wednesday the Department of Transportation announced the launch of a pilot program that will lead to new regulations. On Wednesday the Department of Transportation announced the launch of a pilot program that will lead to new regulations. Here's a hypothetical: How tolerant would you be of a drone flying over your head or zooming through your backyard, if it were carrying life-saving medicine to the scene of a hard-to-reach accident? The U.S. Department of Transportation plans to collect the answers to questions like this, and a slew of other data, in a new test project called the Integration Pilot Program. After combing through 149 applications from state, local and tribal governments seeking to partner with some of the world's leading technology companies, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced the winners Wednesday.

Alexa can open Schlage smart locks
Schlage announced today that users of its Sense and Connect smart locks will now be able to unlock them with Alexa. Users have been able to lock and check the status of their smart deadbolts with Amazon's digital assistant since October, but unlocking them still required a phone. Now Sense and Connect owners can use any Alexa-enabled device to unlock their doors for them. The feature will have to be enabled -- it's disabled by default for security purposes -- through the Amazon Alexa app and users will be required to create a PIN in order to use the feature. That PIN has to be spoken before Alexa can unlock the door and three wrong attempts will cause the voice control feature to be disabled.
Data crunching AI startup ThoughtSpot raises $145 mln
SAN FRANCISCO, May 8 (Reuters) - Artificial intelligence company ThoughtSpot, whose technology enables sophisticated searches of corporate data, has raised $145 million in fresh funding, underscoring investor appetite for technology that promises to automate tasks once done by humans. The company announced the new funding on Tuesday. Chief Executive Officer Ajeet Singh said in an interview that the round was more than double what he had set out to raise and would likely be the final private fundraising before an initial public offering in as little as two years. The funding values the company at $950 million, up from $450 million after its last fundraising, according to venture capital data firm PitchBook Inc. ThoughtSpot sells businesses software that uses artificial intelligence - teaching computer systems to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence - to make queries and deliver answers from a massive set of data. Company employees can search corporate data much the same as making a query using Google Search.
Greenhouse Predicts: Machine Learning-Enabled Technology Now Live
One of the biggest challenges for recruiting teams is accurately predicting when a role will be filled, to better anticipate and sidestep the costs of a slow hiring process. Using machine learning, Greenhouse Predicts helps forecast candidate offer acceptance and new hire start dates, allowing Talent, Operations and Finance teams to more easily see around corners, make informed decisions, and effectively communicate timelines. "Greenhouse Predicts helped the recruiting team at Workfront provide better data to the Finance team on our time-to-fill metric," said Greenhouse customer Jana Johnson, Manager of Talent Acquisition for Workfront, which has been part of the beta since the beginning. "As a fast-growing SaaS company, it's especially important that we're able to accurately forecast headcount spend. Before we had Greenhouse Predicts, each recruiter was sharing their'best guess' on when they thought the position would be filled; this method was far less accurate than the algorithm built in the tool."

The 5 biggest announcements from Microsoft's Build event
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella just wrapped up the keynote at the company's big developer conference, Microsoft BUILD. This year, the keynote was a wild ride through the future of what Microsoft thinks the world will look like, but in between the philosophy quotes and visions of dystopias where you have Skype embedded in your car dashboard, Microsoft actually did reveal a few new projects and products. This year is all about software, AI, distributed computing, and the "multi-device" experience. In case it wasn't clear before, Microsoft wants to make it clear that it doesn't care if you're using a Windows PC, a Mac, an Android phone, or anything else that can access the internet. It just wants you to be using its platform and its software to do so, and that's at the core of everything the company announced today.
