Press Release
Biggest Surprises (and Missed Opportunities) of the E3 Press Conferences
It's Tuesday, which means the E3 show floor is now open. It also means we're finally at the end of a four-day slog of press conferences from some of the gaming world's largest publishers. While Activision Blizzard still doesn't do its own pre-E3 event, just about everyone else does, which means these 96 hours have been a deluge of announcements and reveals that we did our best to get our arms around. We didn't even cover them all: the Square Enix press conference was basically devoid of new information, and the PC Gaming Show, while compelling, was mostly a long list of indie game announcements--some of which we'll be getting to later this week. So, for now, here's everything you need to know about every press conference you need to know about.
AI And Biotech Companies In The East And West Invest In Combating Aging
The longevity and biotechnology industries are focusing on aging in a big way, and it's beginning to show. The fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and regenerative medicine are putting their money on combating aging and age-related diseases, and the benefits are likely to be immense. While biotechnology and AI are relatively new concepts, the announcements of funding and collaboration yesterday by and between three companies are bringing those concepts that much closer to the forefront of medicine. Insilico Medicine, a Baltimore-based next-generation AI company specializing in the application of deep learning for target identification, drug discovery and aging research, yesterday announced a collaboration agreement with WuXi AppTec, a leading global contract research outsourcing provider based in Shanghai, China, serving the pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device industries. "It's a big step not only for Insilico Medicine but for AI and the pharmaceutical industries," said Alex Zhavoronkov, PhD, CEO of Insilico Medicine, Inc.
CEBIT '18: IOTA and Volkswagen Present Proof of Concept for Autonomous Cars
IOTA and Volkswagen are demonstrating a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) that uses IOTA's Tangle system for autonomous cars at the Cebit '18 Expo in Germany today, June 11th. The PoC enables Volkswagen to use IOTA's Tangle architecture to transfer software updates "over-the-air" as part of the car manufacturer's new "Connected Car" systems. Tangle is different than blockchain, in that it does not use "blocks" or mining, but rather is built upon a directed acyclic graph (DAG), a topologically ordered system in which different types of transactions run on different chains in the network simultaneously. According to the PoC press release, Volkswagen's vision is to use Tangle to securely and wirelessly distribute data within its developing smart car economy. Industry experts expect over 250 mln connected cars to be on the road by 2020, raising the need for frequent remote software updates and transparent data access on a large scale.
Microsoft AI Workshop Series shine in Hong Kong Universities with record-high of 600 attendees - Microsoft News Center Hong Kong
According to the "Unlocking the Economic Impact of Digital Transformation in Asia Pacific" conducted by Microsoft and IDC, it was found that 79% of jobs in Hong Kong will be transformed in the next three years, 60% of which will be redeployed to higher value roles, or reskilled to meet the need of the digital age. With the growing importance of Data Science, Big Data and AI in different industries, we launched the new Microsoft AI Certification Programme in March with different tracks covering AI, Big Data, and Data Science to enable IT and business professionals to get equipped with future-ready skill sets for career development in this competitive job market. Moreover, we are extending our support to University Students by organizing free AI workshops to understand the concept and impact of AI in real-life applications. The first workshop of our Microsoft AI Workshop Series was held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), with overwhelming attendance of more than 160 students participating with engaged conversations and follow-up questions on the AI Certification Programme. Following the success of our first Microsoft AI Workshop at PolyU, we have continued the series at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), which attracted a record-high of 200 and 230 attendees for each session. Students were interested to learn more about AI use-cases and our different tracks in our AI Certification Programme.
Square Enix's E3 showcase was a bust
Well, that was a disappointment. Square Enix held its E3 showcase earlier today and it was, to put it mildly, underwhelming. If you were hoping for more information about Final Fantasy VII Remake, or the mysterious Avengers Project, sorry -- neither made the cut this year. A number of smaller releases were absent too, including Dragon Quest Builders 2, The World Ends With You: Final Remix, and Left Alive, a new apocalyptic shooter directed by Armored Core producer Toshifumi Nabeshima. So what did we get instead?
'Assassin's Creed: Odyssey' And 'The Division 2': What To Expect From Ubisoft's E3 Press Conference
Yesterday we heard from Bethesda and Microsoft, and today we've got Ubisoft and Sony on tap. Ubisoft is typically a little peppier than some of the other conferences, though it's hard to fall short of something like EA: in the past Aisha Tyler has injected a little energy into the show, but it doesn't seem like she'll be returning this year. There are a ton of games, however, so here's a rundown on what to expect. The show starts at 4:00 p.m. Eastern. Assassin's Creed: Odyssey: The new Assassin's Creed is headlining Ubisoft's show this year.
Tesla Autopilot software will 'enable full self-driving features'
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the company's Autopilot will'begin to enable full self-driving features' this summer. The billionaire tweeted that a major update to the software coming in August, dubbed Tesla Version 9, will fix a number of issues with the Autopilot system. He said the upgrade will resolve problems with lane merging and enhance the software's self-driving capabilities. The news comes days after federal investigators determined that a Tesla SUV using the firm's autonomous driving system accelerated before it collided with a California freeway divider in March, killing its driver. Data shows the Model X SUV did not brake or try to steer around the barrier in the three seconds before the crash. The driver did not have his hands on the wheel.
