TuSimple Selects Parallel File System for Artificial Intelligence WekaIO
Matrix is the fastest, most scalable parallel file system for AI and technical compute workloads. TuSimple's goal is to develop a Level 4 autonomous truck driving solution, for the dock-to-dock delivery of commercial goods. The company, which was founded by entrepreneurs from the California Institute of Technology, has facilities in San Diego, Calif. and Tucson, Ariz., and to date its technology has been road-tested for some 15,000 miles. TuSimple chose WekaIO Matrix after comparisons with other scale-out file systems demonstrated that only Matrix has the ability to meet its most demanding performance requirements. "WekaIO Matrix was the clear choice for our on-premises DNN training in the U.S. It was understood from the outset that a standard network-attached storage (NAS) solution would not be able to scale to the extent we would need it to, and apart from Matrix being the most performant of all the parallel file systems we evaluated, we really liked the fact that it is hardware-independent, allowing us better control over our infrastructure costs. We are also taking full advantage of WekaIO's object storage capability, which is much more economical than an all-flash system, and allows us to efficiently scale our data catalog in a single namespace," said Dr. Xiaodi Hou, Co-founder and CTO at TuSimple.
It's Time for Marketers to Take Full Advantage of Artificial Intelligence
While the popular image of artificial intelligence seems to come from a Hollywood blockbuster, the reality is less epic and more pervasive. "AI is like a spreadsheet on steroids," explains Xaxis VP of product engineering and AI expert Sara Robertson in the new report "Digital Strategy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence." The result is an improved way for ad buyers to find and define audiences, refine creative messaging, generate audience personas and develop bidding strategies. But the most powerful potential of AI lies in its ability to optimize toward business outcomes rather than simple metrics. That requires advertisers to conceive and build campaigns around the unique opportunities and strategies afforded by AI. The truth is, AI isn't about robots.
Google's Road Back to China Littered With Obstacles
"At this moment, it's not a particularly hospitable environment," said Mark Natkin, managing director of industry research firm Marbridge Consulting. "I'd imagine getting such a search permit would be difficult, if not impossible for the company." In the past week, Apple Inc. came under fire from Chinese state media for not doing enough to block illegal content. The week before, Qualcomm Inc. abandoned its acquisition of Dutch chip maker NXP Semiconductors NV after a deadline to gain approval in China passed. About the same time, Facebook Inc. announced plans to build an "innovation hub" for developers in eastern China--but the business license was then pulled, and the project appears to have been sidelined.
Consumers Looking for Education as Artificial Intelligence Infiltrates Our World
Consumers lack a full understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and are looking to businesses, government and academia for education, according to a FleishmanHillard report released today. The report highlights that 61% of all those surveyed believe the responsibility for educating the public about AI should be shared. The Future., surveyed consumers across the United States and the United Kingdom about their current sentiment on AI. It also asked a panel of 25 global experts in the AI field to provide their perspectives on the key areas where AI is impacting our world. The result is a snapshot of the public's attitudes on AI that analyzes common fears and opportunities, providing organizations with insights into how their audiences want them to engage going forward.

IBC Best Conference Paper Award Recognises Advances in Artificial Intelligence
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In a year when artificial intelligence and machine learning became a very hot topic in the media industry, the IBC Best Conference Paper Award goes to a team from BBC R&D which has investigated practical applications. The award is made to the technical paper which, according to the team of peer reviewers, delivers not just the most significant new research, but does so in an accessible way. The paper, 'AI in production: video analysis and machine learning for expanded live events coverage', will be presented at midday on Sunday 16 September as part of a new initiative at IBC2018 – 'Tech Talks'. 'Tech Talks' ensures that the highly respected technical papers remain an integral part of IBC and its conference, bringing the latest ideas to all delegates in a fresh and accessible form. Talking of the new innovation, Dr Nick Lodge, executive producer of technical sessions in the conference, said "Senior technologists and researchers who have been responsible for original and thought-provoking advances in media technology will talk about their own work, and audiences will have the rare opportunity to question these world experts. "The technologies that impact the media industry are broad," he added. "This year's'Tech Talks' will cover emerging areas like artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, 5G and blockchain." In the award-winning paper a team of BBC researchers covering a wide range of skills, under project lead Mike Evans, discuss a project known as'Ed'. This prototype system is used to create near-live content with minimal crew. An example might be a set of three unmanned 4K cameras, from which'Ed' would produce a number of properly framed HD pictures, cutting between them as appropriate. "The point of the work is to allow coverage of more events, to reach places we otherwise could not reach," Mike Evans said. "With conventional production we cover only about six of the nearly 100 places music is performed at the Glastonbury Festival, for example, or just a tiny fraction of the 50,000 performances in 300 venues at the Edinburgh Fringe." "But with'Ed' we can reach many more of these and do so with production techniques which are much less intrusive for the event itself," he explained. "This technology will be suitable not just for major production companies like the BBC, but for a whole range of use cases, like minor sports which need to increase visibility, and even vloggers who want to improve their online presence." Dr Paul Entwistle, Chair of the IBC Technical Papers Committee which provides careful peer review of the many papers proposed for IBC, said "The detail in this paper is absolutely fascinating.
