AI brings new energy to oil and gas

#artificialintelligence

CALGARY, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) and Imperial have announced a two-year agreement to collaborate on the development of Imperial's in-house machine learning capabilities, which will enable a range of applied artificial intelligence (AI) projects. Through these projects, Imperial will work to develop more effective ways to recover oil and gas resources, reduce environmental impacts and improve the safety of its workforce. "At Imperial, we are taking action to be a leader in advancing digital and AI technology across the value chain," said John Whelan, Imperial's senior vice-president, upstream. "Amii is not only a leader in the AI space globally, but based locally in Alberta. We believe the institute is a perfect partner to help us showcase Alberta's leadership in technology and digital solutions for responsibly-produced oil and gas."

Google launches TensorFlow 2.0 with tighter Keras integration

#artificialintelligence

Google open source machine learning library TensorFlow 2.0 is now available for public use, the company announced today. The alpha version of TensorFlow 2.0 was first made available this spring at the TensorFlow Dev Summit alongside TensorFlow Lite 1.0 for mobile and embedded devices, and other ML tools like TensorFlow Federated. TensorFlow 2.0 comes with a number of changes made in an attempt to improve ease of use, such as the elimination of some APIs thought to be redundant and a tight integration and reliance on tf.keras as its central high-level API. Initial integration with the Keras deep learning library began with the release of TensorFlow 1.0 in February 2017. It also promises three times faster training performance when using mixed precision on Nvidia's Volta and Turing GPUs, and eager execution by default means the latest version of TensorFlow delivers runtime improvements. The TensorFlow framework has been downloaded more than 40 million times since it was released by the Google Brain team in 2015, TensorFlow engineering director Rajat Monga told VentureBeat earlier this year.

EY comes together with coalition to help establish ethical artificial intelligence systems

#artificialintelligence

EY today announced it is coming together with the Partnership on AI, a multistakeholder not-for-profit corporation formed to better understand the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and to serve as an open platform for discussion and engagement around AI's impact on people and society. This decision reflects the commitment of EY to collaborate with the public and private sectors, civil society, academia and beyond, not only to establish governance and controls necessary for building and maintaining trust in AI systems, but also to help ensure the meaningful technological advancements of AI will have a positive impact. Earlier this month, EY established the first cross-disciplinary EY AI Advisory Board to develop rigorous approaches to addressing the ethical challenges surrounding emerging technologies and help implement strategies for building trusted AI systems. Led by Nigel Duffy, EY Global Artificial Intelligence Leader, the EY AI Advisory Board consists of four academic professionals who are experienced in computer science, technology and ethics, and possess a range of diverse knowledge on the subject matter. Duffy and other EY leaders will meet with the board regularly, with the first meeting taking place in London next month.

Artificial Intelligence Improves Control of Prosthetic Hands

#artificialintelligence

Scientists from the University of Texas at Dallas announced a groundbreaking new approach for improving control of prosthetics with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) at the 2019 IEEE International Symposium on Measurement and Control in Robotics Symposium this month. The research findings show a huge leap forward in the goal of fully end-to-end optimization of electromyography (EMG) controlled prosthetic hands. There are more than 40 million amputees across the globe, according to the World Health Organization. Recent advances in prosthetic hand and limb technology have greatly improved the quality of life for upper-limb amputees. However, gaps remain in the control of prosthetic hands, specifically in using naturally generated electric signals from the patient's muscles.

Investors Seek an Edge By Using Technology That Reads Between the Lines

#artificialintelligence

Ever since British economist John Maynard Keynes first declared that investors are prey to people's urge to act, however irrationally, the financial world has tried to quantify the impact of public sentiment on stock prices. Solving the puzzle would give investors in the know a huge advantage over the competition. Over the past decade, one vibrant corner of that still ongoing research has been data analysis. The goal has been to tease out clues about sentiment that are hidden in news articles, regulatory filings, transcripts, and press releases. With the rise of artificial intelligence, the sophistication of sentiment-measuring technology is increasing.

RoboSense RS-LiDAR-M1 LiDAR Sensor Wins AutoSens Awards -

#artificialintelligence

On September 18, 2019, RoboSense announced at Brussels, Belgium that its flagship product RS-LiDAR-M1 Smart LiDAR Sensor has been awarded the elite AutoSens Awards trophy in the "Best Automotive Safety System" category, given to only the highest-rated innovative product or technology in the automotive industry. This press release features multimedia. True autonomous driving requires human-like advanced sensing of the environment for driving with little or no human input. The safety of passengers and passers-by is always the priority concern for autonomous driving. When the RS-LiDAR-M1 is integrated into the current autonomous driving car perception system, it overcomes the weaknesses of millimeter wave radar and camera technologies on identifying obstacles, and eliminates car accidents, such as Tesla's recent cases, greatly improving the security of autonomous driving and ensuring passenger safety.
