Distributed Hyperparameter Tuning in Vertex AI Pipeline
Vertex AI pipelines offer a handy way to implement end-to-end ML workflows from data collection to endpoint monitoring with extremely low effort. For new users, the easiness of development and deployment is largely thanks to the Vertex AI pipeline example offered by GCP. Despite the comprehensive demonstration of the essential components, the official example also exposes the feasibility for users to customize and enhance the pipeline based on their own needs. Amongst all, one of the most exciting components is the distributed Hyperparameter Tuning (HPT) that is capable of exploring a huge search space to identify the best hyperparameters in a short time. However, the limitation of the tutorials is that the distributed HPT is presented as a standalone HPT task/pipeline and it doesn't explicitly present the approach to integrate into the existing Vertex AI pipeline shown in the Vertex AI pipeline example, which motivates me to share my successful attempt that bridges the gap. I believe this will benefit many businesses who have built or will build their ML workflows based on Vertex AI pipeline.
New machine and deep learning method identifies Alzheimer's disease biomarkers and potential targets - Mindplex
Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia and impaired cognitive function, still has no effective treatment, according to researchers. So research is centered on identifying AD biomarkers and targets. Now, scientists at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia have created a computational method that identifies AD biomarkers and targets. It combines multiple "hub gene" ranking methods and "feature selection" methods with machine learning and deep learning. To identify hub genes and gene subsets, the researchers used three AD gene expression datasets using six ranking algorithms and two feature-selection methods. The researchers then created machine learning and deep learning models to identify the gene subset that best distinguished Alzheimer's disease samples from healthy controls.

7 advanced humanoid robots in the world
Humanoid robots are advanced robots that are designed to look and move like humans. They are often equipped with sensors and cameras that allow them to recognize human faces and emotions, respond to voice commands and carry out conversations. Humanoid robots can be programmed to perform a wide range of tasks, such as assisting humans in daily activities, working in manufacturing plants, providing healthcare services, and performing search and rescue operations in hazardous environments. Compared to conventional robots, humanoid robots provide a number of benefits. One of their main advantages is that they can communicate with people in a more intuitive and natural way.
Robotic system offers hidden window into collective bee behavior
Honeybees are famously finicky when it comes to being studied. Research instruments and conditions and even unfamiliar smells can disrupt a colony's behavior. Now, a joint research team from the Mobile Robotic Systems Group in EPFL's School of Engineering and School of Computer and Communication Sciences and the Hiveopolis project at Austria's University of Graz have developed a robotic system that can be unobtrusively built into the frame of a standard honeybee hive. "Many rules of bee society--from collective and individual interactions to raising a healthy brood--are regulated by temperature, so we leveraged that for this study," explains EPFL Ph.D. student Rafael Barmak, first author on a paper on the system recently published in Science Robotics. "The thermal sensors create a snapshot of the bees' collective behavior, while the actuators allow us to influence their movement by modulating thermal fields."
E3 2023: video game industry's biggest expo cancelled
E3, the video game industry's biggest annual expo, has been cancelled. The show had been due to make a return after years of Covid-19 disruption this June in Los Angeles, but in a joint statement, the US's Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and events company Reedpop announced it would no longer be going ahead. Known as "video game Christmas" by fans, E3 has been a fixture in the games industry calendar since 1995, and has traditionally been where game publishers and console manufacturers announce what's next for players. The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U are among the consoles that have been announced at the event. Its cancellation leaves the games industry without a dominant focal point for marketing new titles; instead, since Covid, the trend has been towards live-streamed shows where publishers announce and show new titles virtually.

Into the Future: What does the implication of AI-powered systems mean
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the world as we know it, and it is quickly becoming the most significant technological revolution of our time. It has already transformed many industries, from finance to healthcare, and its impact on the workforce has been widely discussed. As AI technology advances, it is likely to automate many of the tasks that were previously performed by humans, leading to job losses and significant changes in the labor market. In this article, we'll explore the industries that are likely to be most affected by AI and the jobs that are at risk. The manufacturing industry has long been a vital part of the global economy, but it is also one of the most labor-intensive industries.
ColossalChat: An Open-source Solution for Cloning ChatGPT with A Complete RLHF Pipeline
Large AI models like ChatGPT and GPT-4 have become extremely popular worldwide, serving as a foundation for the technological industrial revolution and the development of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). Not only are technology giants racing to release new products, but many AI experts from academia and industry are also joining the related entrepreneurial wave. Generative AI is rapidly iterating on a daily basis, continuously improving! However, OpenAI has not made its models open source, leaving many curious about the technical details behind them. As the leading open-source large AI model solution today,Colossal-AI is the first to open source a complete RLHF pipeline that includes supervised data collection, supervised fine-tuning, reward model training, and reinforcement learning fine-tuning, based on the LLaMA pre-trained model, and shares ColossalChat, the most practical open-source project that closely resembles the original ChatGPT technical solution!
A.I., Brain Scans and Cameras: The Spread of Police Surveillance Tech โ DNyuz
A brain wave reader that can detect lies. Miniaturized cameras that sit inside vape pens and disposable coffee cups. Massive video cameras that zoom in more than a kilometer to capture faces and license plates. At a police conference in Dubai in March, new technologies for the security forces of the future were up for sale. Far from the eyes of the general public, the event provided a rare look at what tools are now available to law enforcement around the world: better and harder-to-detect surveillance, facial recognition software that automatically tracks individuals across cities and computers to break into phones.
